No. 5 Gymnastics defeats No. 4 LSU, 197.725-197.500

It was the Crimson Tide’s highest score of the season

BATON ROUGE, La. – In front of an LSU-record 8,574 fans, the No. 5 ranked Alabama gymnastics team put up its best score of the season to upend No. 4 LSU, which also put up its best score of the season, in the Pete Maravich Assembly Center Friday night, 197.725-197.500. The Crimson Tide’s total is the highest road score in the nation this season.

Sophomore Kayla Williams scores a career-best 9.975 on the vault, leading the Crimson Tide to a season-best 49.525 team score.

Sophomore Kayla Williams scores a career-best 9.975 on the vault, leading the Crimson Tide to a season-best 49.525 team score.

“It was just an extraordinary night of college gymnastics,” UA head coach Sarah Patterson said. “It was loud, it was rocking and both teams put up great performances.”

Even a perfect 10 by LSU’s Lloimincia Hall in the Tiger’s final routine of the night wasn’t enough to derail the Tide after senior Ashley Priess closed out UA’s 49.350 on the balance beam with a meet-high 9.950. Priess’ mark, which tied her career-best score on the beam, followed a 9.925 by junior Kim Jacob and a 9.85 from junior Diandra Milliner

“The pressure was on Ashley (Priess) just like it was at the national championships last year and she came through, like she always does in these situations,” Patterson said.

The Tide got the night started with its second-highest uneven bars total of the season, a 49.350, led by Priess’ winning 9.925, which tied her career-best score. Senior Ashley Sledge got things underway with a season-best 9.9 on the bars while senior Becca Alexin tied her season best of 9.85, a score matched by sophomore Kaitlyn Clark.

Sophomore Kayla Williams highlighted a season-best 49.525 team vault score with a career-best 9.975. Freshmen Carley Sims and Laruen Beers both chipped in career-best scores on the vault, going 9.875 and 9.925, respectively.

The Tide kept things rolling in the third rotation, tying its season best on the floor exercise with a 49.500, led by Jacob’s 9.950, 9.9s from Milliner and junior Sarah DeMeo and 9.875s from Beers and Priess.

Friday night was also LSU’s “pink” meet, raising awareness in the fight against breast cancer. The Tigers generated $108,000 for its sixth-annual Etta James Meet which benefits Foundation 56′s efforts to fight breast cancer in Louisiana. The Tide is now 20-0 when competing in pink, including a 3-0 mark this season.

Alabama closes out its regular season at home on March 15 against No. 2 Oklahoma. Tickets for the Tide’s regular-season finale are available through the Alabama Ticket Office (205.348.2262) located in the lobby of Coleman Coliseum or online at RollTide.com.

Alabama wins it in a close one – 197.725 LSU: 197.500

Coach Patterson is being interviewed and is very proud of how well the team did in the “Deaf Dome” arena – LSU had 8574 fans, a new record by report.  Crowd was loud and supportive of their Bengal Tigers and especially Lloimincia Hall at the end on floor (a 10).

Coach is super proud of Kayla’s vault (9.975) and how the team performed on all four events but especially on the balance beam to finish and secure the victory.  LSU is #1 on floor in the rankings but struggled tonight with their first two routines and had a stumble out of bounds by one of their veterans, Maliah Mathis, who was up third, so they were not at their best on their best event. No doubt, this will fire them up for the remaining weeks to come.

Roots Woodruff noted that this is Alabama’s 20th “Pink Meet” competition and the Tide has won them all to date.

Bradie James is now addressing the crowd about the impact of the breast cancer awareness efforts here in Baton Rouge – they raised to date over 95,000 and he is encouraging everyone to continue supporting this awesome cause – then someone just threw in another 13,000, so they are up to 108,000! Congratulations.

Alabama’s Kayla Williams won the vault with a 9.975.  Ashley Priess tied for 1st on the uneven bars and won the balance beam.  Kim Jacob finished second on floor (Llominicia Hall won with a 10).

Alabama will close out the regular season next week in Tuscaloosa for Senior Night against the #2 Oklahoma Sooners – see you back home Bama Nation in one week!

Fashion Report!

Alabama is wearing the hot pink and black leo they wore earlier this year in Tuscaloosa at the Tide’s Pink Meet.

LSU is wearing black and a shell pink leo.  Both teams look great!

Keys to Victory

This is the second regular season meet between the Crimson Tide and Bengal Tigers, with Alabama claiming a resounding victory back on January 18th in Coleman Coliseum. Here we are six weeks later and it is LSU that has just slightly surged past the Tide in the RQS standings this past week, so they are holding at #4 while Alabama is in at #5.  So tonight’s competition is about as evenly a match up as you can get.

But LSU is celebrating Senior Night and it’s also their Pink Meet, so they are hoping the crowd turns out to inspire their team to a season high score and victory against their major foe, both on the football field and the gymnastics arena.

To win tonight Alabama will need a little luck and some super energized yet focused routines on all four events.  The luck will have to come from LSU experiencing miscues. But Bama would prefer to defeat them straight up and this will require an excellent start on the uneven bars by getting vertical on their handstands and sticking the dismount landings.  It’s as simple as that.

Alabama will see the return of Ashley Sledge to the vault line-up and Lauren Beers and Carley Sims are starting to demonstrate greater confidence with their Yurchenko 1/1 vaults since senior Marissa Gutierrez’s injury two weeks ago at Arkansas.  Tonight all Tide gymnasts need to block well off the table and stick their landings to put pressure on LSU going into the final two events.  Alabama is one of the top vaulting teams in the nation and it’s time to get those scores higher since post-season is just two weeks away.

Alabama will move to the floor exercise where tonight we may see six routines open with an E tumbling element, including Brooke Parker’s return, who will throw two E passes.  Alabama must stand up their difficult tumbling elements and stay in bounds.  Freshman Lauren Beers will be called upon again to showcase her dynamic routine but must nail that final double tuck pass to garner the highest score possible.

Finishing on balance beam, Alabama hopes to demonstrate why they are the “beam team” by showcasing six routines that could all go 9.90 or higher.  Another strong leadoff by Diandra Milliner will set the confident tone early for Kaitlyn Clark and Kayla Williams.  DeMeo, Jacob and Priess will try to secure the victory with more difficult leap and tumbling elements to get the scores as high as possible.

It should be another terrific competition between two historic foes. The LSU band is in the house and Mike the Tiger is waiting to greet us outside later, so let’s get ready for some awesome SEC gymnastics!

Final extended warm-ups – Bama on Beam, LSU on Floor…

Warming up on beam for the Tide – Clark, Jacob, DeMeo, Williams, Beers, Priess, Milliner while Guti is back over on the vault table – jumping on and off to work the ankles under the close eye of David Patterson.

Nice bhs to back pike from Lauren Beers! Dismounting this week with a 1.5 twist.  Full turn with leg horizontal.  Milliner looking sharp with her flight series.

Clark struggling a bit with the Popa jump.  Nice stick of the 1.5 twist dismount by Jacob! Coach Patterson has Kaitlyn redo that last beat jump to sheep jump combination and claims it perfect with a high five. Team departs for the locker room – get ready for the elephant and tiger rumble!

Extended warm-ups continue – Floor for Bama, Beam for LSU

Bama is warming up Parker, DeMeo, Milliner, Jacob, Sims, Priess, Frost, Beers, Dennis and Jacob on floor.  Marissa is running the vault runway to keep working those ankles.  Looking good!

Milliner sticks the second pass run (front layout to 1/1). Parker warming up a double front Arabian and a tuck full in.  She is showing better control in the air of that second E tumbling element this week.

Double layouts – Beers, Frost

Double front Arabian – DeMeo, Milliner, Parker

Tuck Full-In – Parker

Pike Full In – Jacob

Wow! DeMeo just threw a beautfiul double front Arabian (no mat this week!) and Milliner follows with her own version, stuck beautifully.

Hunter Dennis throwing some sky-high double tucks and pikes on floor – looks ready to exhibit tonight possibly.

Guti is now going through her choreo run and dance – Bama gymnasts encourage her and go through some of her dance moves to help inspire her further.
