2008_04_12: NCAA Regionals: vault: Kayla Hoffman: 9.925: Sticks her Y 1/1 with truly effortless form in the air - one judge scored it a 10.
2008_04_12: NCAA Regionals: floor: Kayla Hoffman: 9.875: Opens with a difficult pike full in - nice control - 2 1/2 to front layout - gorgeous in the air and on landing - huge smile now - split leap to split leap full jump combo with excellent toe point and extension - finishes with a double pike - has to check her landing forward on one foot - chest down a bit, hence the step forward - routine was looking great up until that point, so they will have to deduct for that execution flaw while she still gets rewarded for the difficulty and form on her first two passes.
2008_04_12: NCAA Regionals: bars: Kayla Hoffman: 9.750: Throws a super full turn to Tkatchev and nails her double layout but has to bend the knees a bit during the salto in air because she just brushed the high bar with her toes and had to compensate mid-air accordingly. Amazing that she pulled it around from the look on Bryan Raschilla's face.
2008_03_29: SEC Championships: vault: Kayla Hoffman: 9.925: The most completed Y 1/1 but a small hop back cost her the higher score. Great effort in her first post-season championship meet.
2008_03_29: SEC Championships: floor: Kayla Hoffman: 9.900: Pike full in to open, 2 1/2 to punch front layout, double pike to close. Likely a small deduction came at the end on the front aerial (foot slipped a bit and she had to balance before moving into her final leap and pose).
2008_03_29: SEC Championships: bars: Kayla Hoffman: 9.850: Full turn to Tkatchev, double layout dismount were the highlights along with her terrific toe-point and extension; but the straddle toe-shoot transition move was left out this week, so this might have scored higher if we had seen this extra element included. She will need it at Regionals and Nationals.
2008_03_21: Auburn: floor: Kayla Hoffman: 9.900: Opens with a super pike full in, followed by the 2 1/2 to front punch layout - closes with a double pike - perfect landing. Switch split to split full leap combination. Deduction may have come on the pike full in - needs more amplitude to really impress the judges.
2008_03_21: Auburn: beam: Kayla Hoffman: (Exhibition: 9.775): Bhs to layout stepout - front aerial - tuck full jump - switch leap to switch leap combination - bhs to two footed bhs to double twist - great effort.
2008_03_21: Auburn: bars: Kayla Hoffman: 9.825: Completes her bars routine with beautiful toe point and extension - full turn to Tkatchev - double layout dismount, small scoot back on the landing - Score: 9.825. Deduction came on the landing and just slightly going past vertical on that last handstand.
2008_03_21: Auburn: vault: Kayla Hoffman: 9.800: She definitely stuck the Y 1/1 but receives deductions for bending forward at the waist on landing (held it for 2 seconds and then stepped into the salute to the judges).
2008_03_14: Penn State: floor: Kayla Hoffman: 9.925: Opens with a pike full in - beautiful landing - comes right back with a floated version of the 2 1/2 to front layout punch - gorgeous in the air - switch split to switch split full jump - closes with a double pike - another great landing.
2008_03_14: Penn State: beam: Kayla Hoffman: (Exhibition: 9.250): Bhs to layout step-out - falls - switch leap to straddle jump - front aerial to dance pose - tuck full jump - full turn - switch leap to switch leap combination - very nice - dismounts with a bhs to two footed bhs to double twist - sticks the landing! Score: 9.250 You can bet Coach Patterson will continue to work diligently with her on that routine because of its potential to score high - Kayla needs to figure out that flight series mentally.
2008_03_14: Penn State: bars: Kayla Hoffman: 9.900: Beautiful routine - toe point, extension during giants and handstands are excellent - full turn to Tkatchev - toe shoot straddle transition to high bar - double layout dismount - small hop on landing.
2008_03_14: Penn State: vault: Kayla Hoffman: 9.925: Barely a shuffle on her Y 1/1 for a 9.925 as well. Beautfiul flair out to the landing as usual.
2008_03_09: UCLA: bars: Kayla Hoffman: 9.825: Nice routine on bars - full pirouette to Tkatchev and a toe shoot straddle to the high bar - double layout to finish - step forward and out though on the landing - slightly missed perfect vertical on one of her handstands too.
2008_03_09: UCLA: vault: Kayla Hoffman: 9.975: Just threw the most beautiful Y 1/1 of her young career at the Capstone - one judge did not hesitate with a 10.
2008_03_09: UCLA: floor: Kayla Hoffman: 9.850: Opens with a beautiful, high double tuck (stomach bug adjustment from the usual pike full-in) - comes right back with a 2 1/2 to punch front layout - floats forward and into her dance sequence - selling it well - finishes with a double pike - good job!
2008_03_07: Stanford: beam: Kayla Hoffman: (Exhibition: 9.325): Falls on her flight series - nice switch leap to switch leap series - bhs to two footed bhs to double twist, off to the side a bit on the landing.
2008_03_07: Stanford: bars: Kayla Hoffman: 9.825: Nails her double layout dismount off bars - missed one handstand from what we could tell - nice full turn to Tkatchev and the toe shoot straddle to high bar was gorgeous.
2008_03_07: Stanford: vault: Kayla Hoffman: 9.925: Yurchenko 1/1 - great vault!
2008_03_07: Stanford: floor: Kayla Hoffman: 9.850: Chest down on the pike full in, step forward to control the landing - perfect second pass of the 2 1/2 to punch front layout - nice dance and presentation - finishes with a solid double pike - there will be a deduction on the first pass for execution errors but she should be rewarded for the extra difficulty on the first and second pass.
2008_02_29: Florida: floor: Kayla Hoffman: 9.950: Great landing of the pike full in (E) - 2 1/2 to punch front layout - right on time with the music and in the corner - Sassy dancing - beautiful leaps - switch leap to straddle full combo - finished with a double pike, another great landing. Crowd loves this routine.

2008_02_29: Florida: bars: Kayla Hoffman: 9.750: Trouble again with the 1 1/2 pirouette, over-arched and had to 1/2 turn again in order to avoid a break; completed another 1/2 turn to giant to Tkatchev - double layout - hop back on landing, great form and extension throughout.
2008_02_29: Florida: vault: Kayla Hoffman: 9.950: Yurchenko 1/1 - stuck - great amplitude and form mid-air as usual.
2008_02_22: LSU: beam: Kayla Hoffman: (Exhibition: 9.650): Better effort this week - some slight balance checks here and there during a few of the leaps (switch leap to straddle-straddle combination) - strong dismount of the bhs to two-footed bhs to double twist. |
2008_02_22: LSU: vault: Kayla Hoffman: 9.775: Yurchenko 1/1 - looked great in the air but she opened up a little early and ended up jamming the landing a bit as she went for the stick. |
2008_02_22: LSU: bars: Kayla Hoffman: 9.350: Toe slipped on the low bar as she moved into the straddle shoot move and she had to brush her feet on the mat as a result and kip back up. Lost bonus with the missed element and technically the foot scuffing on the low mat was deducted heavily, like a fall from the apparatus. The dismount with super solid - double layout - beautiful form and execution. |
