While a newcomer to the Crimson Tide gymnastics staff, Tom Haley knows a bit about the Alabama program. For the past three years, he has served as program director of the Alabama Gymnastics Academy, which shares the Alabama practice gym with the college team. He has been able to observe the team and coaches up close.
So when Sarah and David Patterson asked if wanted to join the Tide staff as a volunteer assistant coach, his answer was quick and sure.
"There was never any doubt that if they wanted me on the staff that I would do it," Haley said. "It is such a great program with a tremendous tradition of success. I am proud to be a part of it."
In addition to his role as program director of the AGA, Haley is head coach of the Bama Bounders, AGA’s competitive team.
Under his guidance, the Bama Bounders have won several state and regional team titles. Haley’s charges have also brought home numerous state and regional all-around titles and individual events.
Several of his athletes have qualified for the Junior Olympic National Championships. One of his gymnasts, Jacqueline Shealy earned a spot on USA Gymnastics’ Talent Opportunity Program National Team.
A native of San Antonio, Texas, Haley ranked as one of the nation’s best. He was a four year high school All-American. In 1987, he led Douglas MacArthur high school to the Texas High School State Championship. That same year, he also won the vault and horizontal bar competition.
After high school he continued to train. He competed for San Antonio Gymnastic School. He competed in the Junior Olympic program, qualifying for the U.S. National Championships several times. He also trained for two years as an Elite Level gymnast at Gymmasters out of Houston, Texas.
After his competitive career was over, he worked for ASI Gymnastics in Mesquite, Texas. While with ASI, he coached with former Alabama All-American Dana Dobransky, who also served as a volunteer coach with the Crimson Tide.
Haley is the son of Louis and Lynn Kendrick.
