Great Super Six Challenge       [ 8:59 PM, 01/11/02 ]
for the third year. Coach Bryan Raschilla says the coaches are very pleased with the ladies' performance for the first meet of the year with some great competition. Let's sell out Coleman Coliseum for next week, we'll need all of our fans there to support the Tide against UGA. ROLL TIDE ROLL!

UGA's Kinsey Rowe       [ 8:37 PM, 01/11/02 ]
wins the all around with a 39.425, Cory Fritzinger had a 39.325, Katie Rowland of PSU 39.3 and Kristin Sterner of UA 39.275. Andree Pickens tied for third on vault with a 9.925. It was won by Jamie Dantzscher (UCLA) and Shanyn MacEachern of LSU (9.95). Andree finished 2nd on the uneven bars (9.925) and Jamie Dantzscher won it with a 9.975 (UCLA). Balance beam is won by Cory Fritzinger (9.90) of UGA, with Sierra Sapunar (9.875) and Cassie Bair (9.875) of UGA coming in second. Nikki Arnstad of LSU wins floor with a 10, followed in 2nd place by UA's Kristin Sterner (9.95) and Hilary Thompson (9.95) and Marina Degteva (9.95).

UGA wins by .080       [ 8:24 PM, 01/11/02 ]
and Bama finishes 2nd!!! What an amazing accomplishment considering that UA did not even have near their full capacity team for this meet with Andree still coming back from injury (fantastic performance tonight on bars and vault, 9.925 each event), Jeana Rice out for this meet and UA not throwing near their entire difficulty compared to UGA and UCLA. More results: UGA: 196.525 UA: 195.725 UCLA 195.65 UF: 194.600 LSU: 193.825 PSU: 193.375

Tiffany just completed her routine like       [ 8:10 PM, 01/11/02 ]
a trooper and receives a 9.75 for her efforts. Shannon Hrozek just completed a great routine as well and receives a 9.75. Kristin Sterner just went and missed some of her handstands but completed both major releases and her dismount of a double full. Kristin receives a 9.80 and Raegan just completed her routine for a 9.825. Natalie gets a 9.675 because she did an extra move on the low bar. Andree just gave a stupendous bars routine for a 9.925. Welcome back Andree (part 2). Bama scores a 195.725 which is quite respectable considering the injuries and struggles early on balance beam. Looks like UGA is going to win the meet because UCLA is struggling on floor and UGA is sticking their beam routines. LSU 193.825.

Bama is now moving to their final event,       [ 8:02 PM, 01/11/02 ]
the uneven bars. PSU finishes with a 48.6 on the balance beam with the highest score of the night so far going to Katie Rowland (9.85).

Bama finishes up on vault with a total of       [ 7:35 PM, 01/11/02 ]
48.85 and has a running score of 146.675. The judges just gave Nikki Arnstad a 10 for her floor routine and Tousek receives a 9.825 for her beam routine. UCLA has had two falls on the beam. LSU receives a 49.375 on the floor. Onnie Willis has dismounted for the Bruins with a double tuck and we move to the next rotation.

[ top... ]
On vault we have two scores       [ 7:30 PM, 01/11/02 ]
to report for UA: a 9.70 for Lauren Holdefer, a 9.75 for Raegan Tomasek. Stephanie Kite received a 9.3 (fell forward and lightly touched her hand down. Erin Holdefer threw a pike and received a 9.725. Kristin landed her pike 1/2 low and took a step to the left to balance herself for a 9.75. Andree Pickens finishes up vault for us and landed a beautiful Yurchenko full for a 9.925!!! Welcome back Andree!

[ top... ]
Bama now moves to the       [ 7:17 PM, 01/11/02 ]
vault and has renewed energy to push them on to better performances on their last two events. So far on beam, the highest scores have been Kristin Sterner of UA and Erinn Dooley of UF (9.775). UCLA leads with a 98.50, followed by UGA with a 98.475, UA with a 97.825, PSU with a 96.85, UF with a 96.625 and LSU with a 95.275. We need six very strong vaulting scores to stay in the hunt for the top three positions at least so yell loudly Tide fans across the world!

[ top... ]
Alexa had a little bit of       [ 7:14 PM, 01/11/02 ]
trouble on her first pass so the judges deducted about two tenths. Kristin Sterner is up with her new routine. Sternern just nailed her new routine with two double pikes, landing each with an exclamation point in the sky! She receives a 9.95 for excellent dance and difficulty. Bama finishes with a 49.475 on floor.

[ top... ]
Brion is on!       [ 7:10 PM, 01/11/02 ]
With eyes and smile flashing, our freshman is showing her unique style to the judges on floor, starting off with a stupendously high double tuck (almost to the roof) and some nifty front tumbling as well. She receives a 9.925. Martinez just threw four passes with beautiful dance and extension

[ top... ]
Raegan gets a       [ 7:05 PM, 01/11/02 ]
9.85 from the judges. Stephanie is up next and completes both of her initial passes perfectly. She is smiling enthusiastically and finishes strongly with a 9.875. Lauren completes her first two passes of a double pike and a double tuck high and strong, and gets a 9.875.

[ top... ]
Bama is now moving to the       [ 6:55 PM, 01/11/02 ]
floor exercise. LSU scored a 47.150 on the balance beam and overall has a 95.275 for the first two events. UCLA leads UGA by about .075. Raegan gets us started on floor. She opens with a high pike and second pass is a double twist. New music is crisp and rocking. She dismounts with a grin for Coach Raschilla who gives her a high five.

[ top... ]
Nikki Arnstad of LSU       [ 6:54 PM, 01/11/02 ]
just fell on her punch front move. Boudreaux receives a 9.725 on beam, one of the highest scores of the night, she may place!

[ top... ]
Brooke Cazeaux       [ 6:47 PM, 01/11/02 ]
of LSU scores an 8.75 on the beam and Orley Szmuch of UF a 9.875 on the bars. Cory Fritzinger is on floor for UGA and doing a tremendous job selling her routine. Kinsey Rowe sold hers for a 9.925. PSU on vault scores a 48.1 and they have a running score of 96.85. Kara Waterhouse of UF scores a 9.05 on the bars (fell on her dismount). Companioni of LSU scores a 9.65 on her beam. Marline Stephens of UGA is up on floor and threw a very nice double layout and a 2 1/2 twist. Fritzinger receives a 9.925. Marline landed her last pass low and forward but finishes with a smile. UF has a bars total of 47.8.

[ top... ]
LSU's first gymnast       [ 6:41 PM, 01/11/02 ]
up scores a 9.50 on beam and the second gymnast fell. UF is not doing too hot on bars but UGA is heating up the floor with a 9.725 and a 9.875. Cazeaux fell on beam for LSU just now and Carow on bars fell for UF. Sierra Sapunar of UGA fell on her first pass on the floor.

[ top... ]
LSU moves to the balance       [ 6:35 PM, 01/11/02 ]
beam, UGA is on floor, UF on bars and PSU on vault. Eileen Diaz starts off on floor for UGA.

[ top... ]
Kristin receives a       [ 6:33 PM, 01/11/02 ]
9.775. Bama finishes with a 48.350 and is in third place behind PSU (48.750) and UCLA (49.400). LSU scored a 48.125 on uneven bars. Bama is now on a bye.

[ top... ]
Natalie receives a       [ 6:26 PM, 01/11/02 ]
9.575. Andree messed up her leap series and is struggling as well on her flight series (she touched the beam on her leap series). Again, the ladies look very nervous, this is a very difficult event to start on. Andree completed a beautiful punch front and then dismounted. This score will be lower than the others due to the touch and other major balance checks. The final gymnast up for the Tide is Kristin Sterner. She debuts a front punch mount tonight solidly and her flight series is super as well; everything looking quite good so far, including her wolf to standing back pike. She now is dismounting with a double pike and nails it!

[ top... ]
Alexa's score was       [ 6:24 PM, 01/11/02 ]
increased to a 9.65 and we are not sure why she scored this low. Natalie just completed her flight series with a balance check but is otherwise looking pretty good. The Tide looks very tight and they are perhaps a little too deliberate in their moves on beam but they are staying on. The dismounts are watered down as well and this may be deducted by the judges as well.

[ top... ]
Tiffany receives a       [ 6:21 PM, 01/11/02 ]
9.70 and Alexa is now safely on the beam. She completed her flight series with a little glitch and her straddle Popanova with a tiny balance check, as well as her wolf Popanova. Leap series is now done and she is dismounting. She receives a 9.60.

[ top... ]
Raegan stayed       [ 6:17 PM, 01/11/02 ]
on the beam but receives a very low score of 9.65. Tiffany is now on with mount and just completed a very nice flight series and switch leap to gainer. She nailed a landing of single twist with a huge smile.

[ top... ]
Raegan is on       [ 6:14 PM, 01/11/02 ]
with a super bright smile! Flight series is solid so far and leaps look good as well. Nice front walk over but she did her wolf and then hesitated and had to do it over before her 1/4 diver to handstand. Routine is completed with some small nervous glitches. Way to go Raegs!

[ top... ]
The Tide is looking       [ 6:12 PM, 01/11/02 ]
a little nervous on the beam warm ups but they are throwing a majority of their difficulty (punch front mounts, three element flight series).

[ top... ]
Well, we could not have it any better,       [ 6:08 PM, 01/11/02 ]
starting off on beam right in front of our large contingent of Bama fans, who are cheering the ladies on loudly. Bama is in lipstick red velvet with silver spangles on the front and LSU is in black with a sweetheart bodice and silver spangles along the seams and a little hint of purple. PSU is on floor with a dark blue velveteen and white silvery stripes down the arms.

Penn State has only       [ 5:54 PM, 01/11/02 ]
seven gymnasts here tonight. Nicole Bongiovanni is reportedly red-shirting this year.

ESPN is taping this event       [ 5:51 PM, 01/11/02 ]
and Kathy Johnson is the expert commentator once again. Telecast will be within the next few weeks.

We have the line up finalized       [ 5:42 PM, 01/11/02 ]
from Coach Patterson. On vault: Lauren Holdefer, Raegan Tomasek, Stephanie Kite, Erin Holdefer, Kristin Sterner, Andree Pickens. On bars: Tiffany Byrd, Shannon Hrozek, Kristen Sterner, Raegan Tomasek, Natalie Barrington, Andree Pickens. On beam: Raegan Tomasek, Tiffany Byrd, Alexa Martinez, Natalie Barrington, Andree Pickens, and Kristin Sterner. On floor exercise, we have Raegan Tomasek starting us off, followed by Stephanie Kite, Lauren Holdefer, Alexis Brion (!), Alexa Martinez, and Kristin Sterner. This is a very interesting mixture of our entire team and will give just about everyone a chance to showcase on at least one event tonight. Let's get ready to rumble!

[ top... ]
Tide fans are being       [ 5:38 PM, 01/11/02 ]
encouraged by Coach Patterson to "be patient" here at the beginning of the season, as the team is still coming off some significant injuries and will not be as strong on all four events at this point as we expect they will be mid-year and, most importantly, at the end of the year. Salto just sent a major "thumbs up" signal to all Bama fans around the country (and Brion's dad in the deep blue sea somewhere), letting them know that the Tide looks in phenomenal shape and are ready to get this season going! Let's pack the house next week in Coleman Coliseum (Friday, January 18th at 7:00 pm) as we reluctantly welcome the UGA Dawgs for another fierce competition.

[ top... ]
We should have a pretty good crowd here       [ 5:32 PM, 01/11/02 ]
tonight in Gainesville. Most of the parents of our gymgals are here and many fans drove down to lend extra support. It looks like we will be 50 strong at least.

[ top... ]
On the balance beam,       [ 5:31 PM, 01/11/02 ]
the line up will look like this for Alabama: Raegan Tomasek starts us off, followed by sophomore Tiffany Byrd, senior Alexa Martinez, senior Natalie Barrington, senior Andree Pickens and junior Kristin Sterner (our most recent first team All American on this event).

[ top... ]
RaraRuss       [ 5:29 PM, 01/11/02 ]
is now leading the Bama Nation in a loud cheer as the Tide finishes up on the bars andmoves to the dressing room. Competition begins in approximately 27 minutes.

[ top... ]
Alexa is struggling a bit       [ 5:26 PM, 01/11/02 ]
with her Tkatchev release on bars but her form is impeccable on her giants and uprises. It looks like we will see Raegan, Natalie, Andree, Shannon, Kristin and Tiffany on bars tonight since they have been the most consistent in the warm ups.

[ top... ]
Natalie is looking better       [ 5:21 PM, 01/11/02 ]
on the bars and Andree just hit her full routine in another superb practice run. Looks like Sierra Sapunar will go on beam for the gymdogs. UCLA looks as powerful and confident as ever. Maloney will not be going on any events for them tonight due to recovering from some off season surgery.

[ top... ]
Raegan Tomasek       [ 5:19 PM, 01/11/02 ]
just did a very nice series on the bars and is reaching for each handstand with wonderful toe point. She may not do her toe on toe off. Andree just flows like water on the bars and did a stupendous full in dismount, nailing her landing. A nice double layout on the bars from Alexa Martinez.

[ top... ]
Bama fans are here       [ 5:10 PM, 01/11/02 ]
in good numbers. Rara Russ is handing out shakers to the Bama Nation and encouraging them to cheer loudly. Bama will be without Jeana Rice tonight because she is serving a one meet suspension for a team rules violation back in the Fall. On vault we saw Alexis Brion, Shannon Hrozek, both Holdefers, Kristin Sterner, Andree Pickens, and Raegan Tomasek warming up, as well as Stephanie Kite. Bama is now warming up on bars and Natalie Barrington, who had a stomach bug earlier this week, is looking a tiny bit sluggish on some of her uprises. The coaches hope to see her do balance beam and bars tonight. Andree just warmed up and looks really good. Alexa Martinez just warmed up as well as Tiffany and they are looking good on bars as well. Kudos to freshman Shannon Hrozek as well, who may make her debut on this event tonight.

[ top... ]
All teams present       [ 5:06 PM, 01/11/02 ]
look to be in pretty good shape. UF is wearing a metallic blue and grapefruit orange outfit,, LSU is in black and white with silver lame. It looks like redshirt freshman, Erinn Dooley of UF will compete on at least two events. She just finished her floor warm-up. We are curious to see if the judges are going to stick to the new rules about handstand positions on the uneven bars tonight.

[ top... ]
The Tide Has Arrived in Gainesville       [ 5:04 PM, 01/11/02 ]
and they are ready to roll! Bama is warming up on and will begin the meet on the balance beam (ouch!). This should be okay Bama fans because the Tide has historically done very well in Gainesville, especially on the balance beam, so take a deep breath when competition begins and hold on tight!
