Boy, did the Alabama gymnasts
[ 9:03 PM, 02/02/02 ]
just about go through the roof when their final team score was announced (and the crowd went along with them!). That's the score the Tide has been looking for and they know how close they came to breaking 197. This wll prepare them for a tough road meet next week against LSU (Friday, February 8). Fans, check us out again on the website next Friday and then on Sunday as we go against the Auburn Tigers on February 10 at 2 pm. Barry Weck, our website guru expresses that he is very impressed with Andree Pickens' performance tonight on the uneven bars and the vault and was amazed at how great the Tide looked on the floor after the opening fall from Lauren Holdefer. What a great recovery, he noted. We will sign off now and check back with you next week! ROLL TIDE ROLL!
[ top... ]
Andree and Kristin
[ 8:58 PM, 02/02/02 ]
finish first and second on the vault. Tiffany, Natalie, Houk, and Andree win the bars. On the balance beam, there are several Nebraska gymnasts who finish in third place and Natalie takes second and Kristin Sterner finishes first (way to go 1st Team All American on the beam!). On the floor, there is a tie for second: Alabama's Alexis Brion and Alexa Martinez. The winner is our own Kristin Sterner (where did they deduct?). The all-around is won by Kristin Sterner as well with a total of : 39.575. AJ Lamb and Tami Harris were in second and third. Bama finishes with a 196.925 (way to go Tide) and Nebraska a 196.100
[ top... ]
Shannon Hrozek
[ 8:54 PM, 02/02/02 ]
is exhibiting her routine on floor for the first time and she can tumble! As well as dance like a maniac! She opens with a super high double pike (nice and tight) and her second pass went so fast that we will have to get the coaches to tell us what she threw (looked like a front half to front half to front pike to a front tuck (four elements, I kid you not). What a great and confident performance by our freshmen tonight! Bama has some stupendous depth on floor and are starting to pull it all together.
[ top... ]
Goss
[ 8:45 PM, 02/02/02 ]
receives a 9.725 for her beam routine and French just fell on her flight series (a two-footed layout from two flic flacs). She fell again on her dismount of a round off to a front full (seemed to hit the edge of the beam). Brion receives a well-deserved 9.925 for her floor routine. Alexa Martinez just nailed her front to a double twist, as well as two layouts on her second pass. A third pass of double twist and she is doing some nifty straddle to wolf full leaps and will finish with a final pass of front through to a roundoff to layout step out. The crowd loves this one too! Jen French received a 8.700 for her beam routine and Richelle Simpson is closing out for the Cornhuskers. Martinez also receives a well-deserved 9.925. Sterner is hoping to put the icing on the cake for the Tide as she nails her double pike, her front through to a rudi layout stepout and finishes with a superb double pike and a little hoochy koochy dance move to her team mates before she finishes with her last hand salute, right in time with the music. One judge gives her a 10 and the final score is a 9.975. Simpson of Nebraska receives a 9.825. Alabama will win this one with some truly fantastic performances tonight on floor and a better performance on the beam and vault. Final scores to follow.
[ top... ]
Tami Harris
[ 8:42 PM, 02/02/02 ]
receives a 9.75 for her beam routine. Laura Goss struggled on a very difficult flight series of flic flac flic flac to Onodi (bent completely to the side at the waist, .3 deduction). So-o-o difficult! Alexis is now up on the floor after Reeser scored a superb 9.90. Alexis is through her first two passes (floating like a snowflake from the sky to the ground, she is THAT effortless). New dance moves again at the end of her routine just add to a terrific overall effect. Chills running up and down our backs now! Way to go after this meet Bama!

The Ten Troupe is
[ 8:28 PM, 02/02/02 ]
on their feet and cheering loudly as the band plays the Alabama fight song. AJ Lamb mounts with a punch front and two back walkovers (?), walking out of the second one (she was supposed to throw a layout probably as her third element). Nice wrap under the beam and a gainer dismount off the side. Some execution errors that will be deducted but otherwise a confident routine from her. On floor we start with one of the twins, Lauren Holdefer. A solid opening pass of double tuck, followed by a double pike, which she fell on (has never fallen in her young career at UA on the floor). She is trying to finish strongly and the crowd continues to clap with her. The crowd is definitely behind her as she throws a really nice front layout to front tuck. Lamb received a 9.825 and apparently covered her missed flight element well with the judges. Jamie Saas is now on beam and throws a solid punch front (Nebraska just has alot of confidence on the beam). She dismounts with two back handsprings to a full twist. Stephanie Kite is up next on floor. Holdefer receives a 9.325 for her floor routine. We need five solid routines from the Bama gals. Her first two passes are perfection! She is striving for leg extension and toe point on each move. She finishes beautifully and the crowd and her fellow gymnasts greet her with open arms! Way to go Stephanie! We needed that one bad because Saas got a 9.825. Tami Harris is now up on beam and throws a nice layout from a flic flac. She dismounts with a front full but lands it off to the side of the mat, a deduction for sure. Michelle Reeser is now up on floor to get this crowd back and she does so in fine fashion with a super high and tight double pike. The crowd has just about stormed the floor as Michelle completes a super electrifying routine with perfect timing on each tumbling pass and dance element. You never thought the Tide fans would love "Devil Went Down to Georgia" that much! Steph receives a 9.875 for her floor routine, way to go!

On the floor
[ 8:24 PM, 02/02/02 ]
exercise, Bama will be warming up Alexa Martinez and Shannon Hrozek as well as the rest of the regular lineup. The Tide holds a slim lead over the Cornhuskers: 147.325 to 147.150. If Bama can get the peformances on floor they are capable of, they should be able to hold on. The attendance announced tonight is 9,559!!! All right!
[ top... ]
The judges were suitably
[ 8:20 PM, 02/02/02 ]
impressed with a superb beam routine by Kristin Sterner, and chose to deduct her for the step forward on her dismount only, ending with a 9.875 final score. Shannon Hrozek will exhibit on the beam now. Looks great so far with a flic flac to layout, no noticeable bobbles; her switch leap to wolf jump and a sheep jump out of a hitch kick look great. She is dismounting with a double twist, which she lands solidly. Her confidence tonight was much better compared to her first exhibition and earlier warm ups on this event. Way to go Shannon! Third rotation is over (whoosh!) and the Tide can make up some huge ground once again on the floor exercise with some electric performances. Nebraska will be doing everything they can to match the Tide with solid beam performances.

Tami Harris
[ 8:16 PM, 02/02/02 ]
received a 9.85 so it looks like the judges did not her stepping out of bounds (we will double check this on the tape for the post-meet commentary). Richelle Simpson is up on floor to finish and opened with a beautiful double pike. She landed her final double pike very low and almost bent down onto the floor. Andree receives a 9.275 for her beam score. Sterner is up now and throws a perfect flight series (I mean perfect). A perfect straddle to straddle Popa combination, as well as her standing back pike from a wolf jump. Now the dismount, a double pike, which she lands with one foot forward and her chest bent down. Simpson receives a 9.775 for her floor routine.
[ top... ]
Tami Harris
[ 8:13 PM, 02/02/02 ]
is now on floor to some grooving Pink Floyd music, opening with a front pike, then a front full to a front layout. Her final pass is a double tuck, which she appears to have stepped out of bounds on. Alexa Martinez receives a low score from the judges, a 9.725. She may have missed a required combination element. We will check the tape for the post meet commentary. Andree is now on, beautiful switch leap to wolf leap. She fell on her third element of her flight series (layout), but throws a magnificent punch front and just nails her double tuck dismount through the roof!!! What a way to finish, she spells senior with a capital S!
[ top... ]
Alexa Martinez
[ 8:11 PM, 02/02/02 ]
is on beam and throwing some nice moves, a tiny bobble on her second element of her flight series but two beautiful POPAS (straddle full and a wolf full), not to mention that new punch front, which she lands strongly. One more straddle leap and she is off safely with a gainer full. Her team mates have just rushed to her side to thank her profusely for a solid routine. Lamb receives a 9.90 (I told you they love triples).
[ top... ]
Natalie is through her
[ 8:07 PM, 02/02/02 ]
flight series and is just a little tentative on her leap series but nothing major. She just threw a cartwheel on the beam as an extra element (interesting) and a really nice switch leap to Korbut (fish flop), dismounting with a gainer full off the side of the beam. Lamb just threw a triple full opening pass to the Pink Panther music and a double pike on her second pass. Landgraf receives a 9.875 for her floor routine (the judges really like triples). Barrington receives a 9.85 for her beam routine, which matches her career high. Lamb finishes with two front layouts and salutes the crowd.
[ top... ]
Jen French
[ 8:02 PM, 02/02/02 ]
receives a 9.775 for her floor routine and Gloudemans is now on the floor with a strong and high double pike and a second pass of two front fulls that she almost loses her balance on (second element had two balance checks, like her foot slipped on the floor mat). She finishes with a front full to barani layout to shushonova. Tomasek receives a 9.775 for her beam. Tiffany is now on safely. Her flight series has a major bend at the waist on the third element but she stays on. Her switch leap to standing gainer back is solid and she is now dismounting with a full twist, no movement. Another routine that stayed on but had execution mistakes. The Tide needs to build their confidence from this point on. A nice triple opening pass from Landgraf on the floor. Gloudeman received a 9.800 for her floor routine despite her trouble on that second pass. Tiffany receives a 9.60 for her beam routine, again mainly due to the .3 deduction for her bend at the waist on her final flight series element. But she stayed on folks! Natalie Barrington is up next.
[ top... ]
Jen French
[ 7:59 PM, 02/02/02 ]
is starting on floor for Nebraska and she opens with a nice double pike. Her second series is a front full to front pike, that she lands a bit low and with bent knees during the salto. Her final pass is a front layout to a front tuck. Nice, playful music. On the beam, is Raegan Tomasek. She mounts with a punch front (solid). Her flight series of flic flac to layout has one leg off to the side to balance herself (a deduction). Her front walkover is beautiful as is her 1/4 dive to handstand from a wolf jump. She dismounts with a gainer full off the side and the crowd erupts with hearty cheers of ROLL TIDE ROLL!
[ top... ]
Alexa Martinez
[ 7:55 PM, 02/02/02 ]
is showing a regular layout as part of her expanded flight series as well as a punch front. Andree looks like she will be adding her switch leap series tonight and maybe that double tuck dismount. There will be a change in the order of our gymnasts, with Raegan Tomasek once again starting us off, as she has for the past three years.

Alabama is now in the lead
[ 7:53 PM, 02/02/02 ]
by .550. They have a running score of 98.500 (49.275 on the bars) and Nebraska has a running score of 97.950 (49.00 on the vault). Once again, it comes down to the Tide's performance on the balance beam and floor. If the Tide stays on and completes their elements with no significant deductions, they will win this meet handily.
[ top... ]
Alabama just completed another
[ 7:49 PM, 02/02/02 ]
strong uneven bars rotation, highlighted by Tiffany's 9.85 and Andree's 9.95. The alumni are now coming out as the ladies move to the balance beam. We see Patty Kleckner, Patty Rice, Ali Blumberg, Dana Dobransky, Katherine Kelleher, Shay McFall, Marti Watson, Kara Stilp, Sheryl Dundas, Kerri Duley, Chasity Junkin, Kim Kelly, Marna Neubauer, Mandy Chapman, Gwen Spidle, Lexa Evans, Dara Stewart, and Katie Hornecker.

Shannon
[ 7:42 PM, 02/02/02 ]
receives a 9.80 for her bars routine and Kristin Sterner just threw her routine, but missed all but one handstand, and will be deducted accordingly. She took a small hop on her double front dismount as well. Libby gets a 9.85 for her vault. Sterner gets a 9.825 and Raegan Tomasek just threw her jaeger release (sans the toe on toe off) and takes a small step to check her landing on the double front. Awesome toe point throughout. Harris receives a 9.80 for her Yurchenko full, which was lacking in repulsion off the horse and had a chest low landing. Tomasek gets a 9.75 for her bars and Natalie Barrington a 9.85 (took a step out of her dismount landing). That roar you just heard from the Tide faithful is for our own ANDREE PICKENS, for another incredibly stupendous bars routine (slightly missed only one handstand position). Her height and distance and stuck landing on the full in are so incredible to behold! She receives a 9.95.

We may get a chance to see
[ 7:36 PM, 02/02/02 ]
Alexa Martinez on the uneven bars (exhibition) tonight, as she has been warming up with the competition line-up. AJ Lamb is up first on the vault for Nebraska. She vaults a front pike, clean but takes a hop forward on the landing. Tiffany Byrd salutes the judges and prepares to mount the uneven bars for the Tide. She completes the Tkatchev release move, pirouettes are nice and tight, no noticeable miss of a handstand and she nails her dismount. Lamb gets a 9.800 for her front pike and Richelle Simpson just threw the same but does not land as cleanly (bent forward and a step). Tiffany gets a 9.85 for a truly solid routine. Freshman Shannon Hrozek just completed a great routine, striving for every toe point and handstand and she had a magnificent Geinger release, landing with a solid double tuck. Simpson got a 9.750 for her vault. Libby just threw a nice pike with a 1/2 twist, a little twisted to the side but overall nice form throughout and landing.
[ top... ]
We just got a chance to see Andree Pickens
[ 7:31 PM, 02/02/02 ]
on the vault replay and I will have to go on line and say I have never seen a more perfect Yurchenko full from her (what awesome form and distance and she was chest high on the landing as well). Nebraska has a total on the bars of 48.950 and Alabama has a 49.225 on the vault, thus leading the cornhuskers by .275 after one rotation.
[ top... ]
Jess Wertz
[ 7:28 PM, 02/02/02 ]
gets a 9.75 for her bars routine. Now the Tide moves to their strongest event, the uneven bars. Let's stay on girls and make those handstands and nail those dismounts!
[ top... ]
Again, Kristin Sterner
[ 7:22 PM, 02/02/02 ]
just received a 9.90 for her vault and Simpson a 9.775. Tami Harris just completed a beautiful bars routine, with one missed handstand and a double layout dismount (piked down a bit). Erin Holdefer is next with her front pike, one foot forward, but great height and distance for a 9.80. Tami gets a 9.825 (big discrepancy between the judges). Julie Houk just completed a gorgeous routine but overextended the high bar on one of her giant uprises but landed her full in (had to bend forward for two seconds before she saluted the judges). Andree Pickens just rocked the house with a stupendous vault but the judges would only award a 9.975. Jess Wertz has just finished her bars routine and the crowd gives her nice applause. Houk receives a 9.875 for her bar routine, which had some nice difficulty, to be sure.
[ top... ]
Shannon Hrozek
[ 7:20 PM, 02/02/02 ]
receives a 9.775 on vault and Libby a 9.700 for her bars routine. A.J. gets a 9.725 for her bars routine and Simpson is now up, with nice combinations of pirouetting and a Geinger release move but her legs separate several times throughout the routine, which will be a slight deduction. Kite gets a 9.775 for her first competitive vault this year and Sterner just threw an awesome pike with a 1/2 twist, one small step back to check her landing, for a 9.90.
[ top... ]
Lauren Holdefer starts us off
[ 7:16 PM, 02/02/02 ]
on vault with a front pike, one step forward on her landing. Guess as to the score? 9.750. Libby is up for Nebraska. She has nice pirouettes on top of the bar and a Jaeger release and a full in full out dismount with bent knees on the landing. Shannon Hrozek just nailed her front pike and the crowd responded with a roar of approval.
[ top... ]
Shannon Hrozek is
[ 7:13 PM, 02/02/02 ]
massaging her toes before she vaults, some kind of ritual to pump her performance up. The warm up touch is now over and HERE WE GO!

Nebraska is attired in
[ 7:11 PM, 02/02/02 ]
a black sweetheart bodice with red velveteen sleeves, sparkles shining throughout the material. Alabama is wearing an old stand-by, dark cranberry velveteen, which is a nice contrast to Nebraska since we basically share the same colors (they added black to their school colors about six years ago, mirroring UGA). Coach Patterson is wearing what appears to be a cocoa-colored shantung silk top and matching pants. Dan Kendig is wearing a burnt-orange-red long-sleeved sweat-shirt (can't leave out his fashion statement, folks).
[ top... ]
Coach Patterson continues
[ 7:10 PM, 02/02/02 ]
to work on building depth across all events and is hoping her team will respond tonight with a huge score on each.

The Ten Troupe
[ 6:57 PM, 02/02/02 ]
is getting into that jamming Bama Band, especially the "Evil Woman" and "Crazy Horse" (all the great tunes come from the late 60s and early 70s you know). Rararuss is cueing the Ten Troupe to prepare for some boisterous cheering tonight to welcome out team onto the mat. Yeah Alabama is now being played and this Tide fan just had to start clapping in unison in honor of our University and our gymnastics team especially. Sorry for the partisan clap, but Tide fans will understand in the wake of the past two days. Now, onto the MAIN EVENT!

The judges for tonight

are: Marian Dykes, Deb Kornegay, Pat Ethredge, and Patty Hannan.

The Tide cheerleaders are now
[ 6:48 PM, 02/02/02 ]
on the floor, trying to get the crowd going. It looks potentially like a large crowd, many are still arriving. This is UA Alumni Night and we will let you know which former Alabama gymnastics "greats" have shown up for this always special meeting.

Coach Mal Moore is
[ 6:46 PM, 02/02/02 ]
here on press row, ready to watch some fantastic gymnastics. What a great supporter he is of the Tide Gymnastics Team! He was introduced to the Cooks and welcomed them to Tuscaloosa.

Coach Patterson is now
[ 6:44 PM, 02/02/02 ]
advertising the NCAA National Championships in April on the jumbotron. She could work for the Today Show if she ever thought about leaving gymnastics, she's that natural in front of the camera.

Bama's coaches
[ 6:41 PM, 02/02/02 ]
are going over their final line-ups before exiting to dress for the opening ceremonies. The Big "A" is now being assembled in the middle of Coleman Coliseum for the team introductions. Coach Jim Wells is now on the jumbotron, walking around with Big Al on the baseball field. Alabama's next home meet (in Coleman Coliseum) will be February 22nd against Florida. Alabama will go on the road next Friday, February 8, to vie against the LSU Tigers before coming home to the BJCC in Birmingham for their "home" meet against Auburn on Sunday, February 10 at 2 pm.

Alabama will really need
[ 6:38 PM, 02/02/02 ]
to beef up their performance on the balance beam tonight to stay apace of Nebraska, which is ranked in the Top 5 nationally on this event. The meet will commence in 20 minutes.
[ top... ]
Nebraska has nice lines on
[ 6:35 PM, 02/02/02 ]
the uneven bars but is struggling a bit with their dismounts. Hrozek reminds us of Danielle McAdams on the beam with her difficulty and long lines but she is still struggling a bit with finding her "comfort zone" on this apparatus and will likely work exhibitions for awhile longer.
[ top... ]
Andree Pickens
[ 6:32 PM, 02/02/02 ]
is throwing her double tuck dismount comfortably off the beam and looks ready to rumble on this event, hoping to garner a higher score tonight. Stephanie Kite and Shannon Hrozek are also warming up on the beam. Kristin Sterner just threw her punch front mount with a little bobble but came back with a super flight series.
[ top... ]
Well, lookee there,
[ 6:30 PM, 02/02/02 ]
a punch front on the balance beam by senior Alexa Martinez! We have not seen this move in her routine since her freshman year. Coach Sarah Patterson is dressed in red with black fur around the collar and cuffs and black pants. Alabama has new warm-ups for this meet, a beautiful cranberry with sparkles all through the netting-like fabric. Looks great!
[ top... ]
Also in attendance tonight
[ 6:28 PM, 02/02/02 ]
are the new Arkansas coaches, Mark and Renee Cook. They are here to see how UA puts on The Big Show and manages to attract large audiences to watch a gymnastics meet. Arkansas will be debuting their team next year and Alabama will have their first meet against this team in Arkansas in 2003.
[ top... ]
We have been
[ 6:27 PM, 02/02/02 ]
watching warm-ups for the past 45 minutes and Nebraska looks in excellent condition and will be a worthy opponent for the Tide tonight. The Cornhuskers are currently ranked 4th, just a bit ahead of number 5 Alabama in the polls this week.

Hey Tide Fans and
[ 6:25 PM, 02/02/02 ]
welcome to the UA versus Nebraska meet. We were late getting on line due to some problems accessing our internet phone line, but thanks to the great UA maintenance crew and Roots Woodruff, we are now ready to swing into action with live commentary. A special note, our computer guru, Barry Weck, has joined us at press row and will be providing his unique impressions on the panorama that IS Alabama Gymnastics.
