Cantrell gets a       [ 4:06 AM, 02/10/02 ]

39.025 for her all-around victory tonight. Again, Bama's final score is a 197.250 and Auburn has a 193.525. Attendance is 3,828. It was partisan Bama all the way. Bama goes on the road next week against UGA (February 15) and will be back in Coleman Coliseum on the 22nd of February against Florida. Roll Tide!

[ top... ]
Bama sweeps       [ 4:05 AM, 02/10/02 ]

the bars, beam and floor events while Hannah Littrell earned a spot in the vault awards with a nice 9.85. Shannon Hrozek finishes third on the floor (9.90), Brion second (9.95) and Reeser (9.975), a freshman sweep!!!

[ top... ]
Bama did not have anyone       [ 3:58 AM, 02/10/02 ]

go all around due to Sterner's injury on the vault (Jeana Rice was held out on the floor due to the Tide having a comfortable lead). Andree Pickens won the vault, uneven bars, and the balance beam. Reeser won the floor exercise.

[ top... ]
The event awards are now being       [ 3:55 AM, 02/10/02 ]

handed out by Miss America 2002, who is here for the American Cancer Society. She is praising the teams for their fine performances and is talking to the crowd about her passion to help find a cure for cancer.

[ top... ]
Alexa Martinez       [ 3:43 AM, 02/10/02 ]

gets a 9.800 for her floor routine. Michelle Reeser is up next and just threw a super opening pass of a double pike. Her dance mesmerizes the crowd and she almost gets a standing ovation at the end (the Ten Troupe jumped threw the roof as she saluted them). Reeser gets a 9.975 for her routine. Stephanie Kite has just finished hers (she has become a steady one for us on this event). Robin O'Rear got a 8.925 for her beam routine and Lancaster a 9.70. Cantrell is doing a nice job for Auburn despite wearing that awkward brace. All moves are completed with no major deductions so she should get a very nice score. Alexis Brion is up on floor and is soaring like a bird, no lingering effects of that earlier warm up shock on her heel. She finishes beautifully, always knowing where her body is in the air. What timing! Stephanie receives a 9.875 for her floor routine. Cantrell receives a 9.825 for her beam routine. Brion receives a 9.95 for her floor and the team gets a 49.500 total on the floor for a 197.250 final team score. Auburn gets a 47.675 on the balance beam and a 193.525.

[ top... ]
Hrozek       [ 3:41 AM, 02/10/02 ]

gets a 9.90 for her floor routine and Martinez just had the same stumble on her opening pass of a front through to a double twist (bent forward low at the waist on landing). She has four passes and completes the remaining three with precision but will suffer for that first pass. Boyte gets a 9.475 for her beam routine. Robin O'Rear is now up and just fell on her flight series (third element).

[ top... ]
Kayce Stein gets a       [ 3:37 AM, 02/10/02 ]

9.025 for her beam routine. Shannon opens with a super dynamite double pike and a whip half to front punch, finishing with a double twist. She does a double twist to straddle Popa combination that is unmatched. Kristi Boyte just threw a nice flight series on the beam and has some mild balance checks in her leaps. She throws a punch front and bends at the waist and takes two balance steps to stop her forward progress. She dismounts with a smile (gainer off the side of the beam).

[ top... ]
Kayce Stein is up on beam for       [ 3:35 AM, 02/10/02 ]

Auburn and did a leg windmill on her flight series to keep from falling. She is having a lot of balance checks and then falls on her switch leap to standing back gainer. Holdefer gets a 9.05 for her floor routine. Shannon Hrozek is up next.

[ top... ]
Lauren Holdefer is       [ 3:33 AM, 02/10/02 ]

starting off on the floor for the Tide. She just fell on her second pass of a double pike. She bounces right back up and the crowd cheers her on to the finish. She will have a major deduction for the fall but we're glad she's okay. Pate gets a 9.65 for her beam routine.

[ top... ]
Bama is looking at their line up for the floor       [ 3:28 AM, 02/10/02 ]

since they are well ahead and will try to get the best routines out there without risking further injury. Word up on Kristin Sterner is an ankle sprain that she has iced up. She was smiling and sitting with the team during the balance beam and the smiles were ones of relief all around. David Patterson just told us she is even walking around on it a little and so far it looks like she will be just fine.

[ top... ]
The Bama fans are up dancing with       [ 3:25 AM, 02/10/02 ]

the YMCA Dads (and some other dudes who are crashing their dancing). Lauren Holdefer got an increase in her vault score (9.70)for a total of 49.00 for the Tide on this event. Bama has the chance to go 197 plus with at least five solid floor routines. We need at least a 49.350 on the floor to get to 197.

[ top... ]
Bama has a 49.250       [ 3:22 AM, 02/10/02 ]

on the balance beam and a 147.75 running score. Kristi Boyte fell on her last pass and the Tigers will have to count a fall now in their final total. Shannon Hrozek is up on beam for exhibition. She throws a beautiful back handspring to a layout as well as a gorgeous switch leap to wolf jump combination (amplitude magnificent). Bama now moves to the floor. Auburn has a running score of 145.875.

[ top... ]
Mary Nell Pate       [ 3:19 AM, 02/10/02 ]

just finished her floor routine (opening pass of a double tuck). Andree is now up on the beam for the Tide. Switch leap to a wolf jump is done very nicely, as well as her flight series and the punch front. She dismounts with a super solid double tuck and the crowd erupts with relief!. Pate gets a 9.875 for her floor. Andree gets a 9.925!!

[ top... ]
Jeana Rice is       [ 3:17 AM, 02/10/02 ]

now up for the Tide and throws two beautiful layouts like a walk in the park as well as a wolf Popa and a standing gainer. She nailed the double twist dismount and gets a 9.875. Welcome back Jeana!

[ top... ]
So far so good       [ 3:13 AM, 02/10/02 ]

for Alexa, two leaps of a straddle jump and her head roll to a stag leap. Her flight series is done as well, along with a straddle Popa and a wolf Popa, then her full turn. She throws another switch leap and dismounts with a gainer full off the side of the beam. Brannon gets a 9.825 for her floor routine. Hannah Littrell opens on floor with a nice double pike to some rocking 70s music. Martinez gets a 9.825 for her beam routine (one judge gave her a 9.90).

[ top... ]
Alexa Martinez       [ 3:12 AM, 02/10/02 ]

is ready to go up for the Tide. She must be brave and throw a better routine than we saw Friday night at Baton Rouge.

[ top... ]
Cantrell gets a       [ 3:10 AM, 02/10/02 ]

9.625 for her floor routine. Terri Brannon is up next, throwing a front to a rudi for her opening pass. Natalie gets a 9.225 for her beam routine.

[ top... ]
Natalie Barrington is up next for       [ 3:09 AM, 02/10/02 ]

Bama on the beam. She falls on the third element of her flight series. The rest of her routine is pretty solid.

[ top... ]
Sally Cantrell       [ 3:08 AM, 02/10/02 ]

opens with a 2 1/2 twist that she over-rotates a bit and has to put out one leg to counter. Byrd gets a 9.75, perhaps for taking a little too long before throwing her flight series.

[ top... ]
Tiffany Byrd       [ 3:06 AM, 02/10/02 ]

is up now on the balance beam and is through her mount and full turn, as well as her three leap series. She nails her flight series (the best yet so far this season) and her switch leap to standing back gainer. She is in a zone right now. She nails her dismount of a round off to a full twist. Stein gets a 9.15 for her floor routine.

[ top... ]
Kayce Stein is       [ 3:04 AM, 02/10/02 ]

up on the floor for the Tigers to Classical Gas. She falls on her opening pass of 2 1/2 twist but recovers to throw a double twist on her second pass. Tomasek receives a 9.875 for her beam routine.

[ top... ]
Gwen Spidle and Mandy Chapman       [ 3:01 AM, 02/10/02 ]

are in the audience, sitting near the parents. Raegan is on safely and just threw a three flight element series, a three leap series and looks very confident. She dismounts with a back handspring to gainer layout and the crowd erupts with joy!

[ top... ]
Alabama moves to the balance beam       [ 2:56 AM, 02/10/02 ]

with a lead of 1.025 over the Auburn Tigers. The line up will shift with Kristin Sterner out and Jeana Rice likely in.

[ top... ]
And we still have Natalie       [ 2:52 AM, 02/10/02 ]

Barrington up on the bars for the Tide. We need a huge score from her. She throws a beautiful routine and a stuck landing of a double tuck out of a full pirouette for a 9.90. Kristi Boyte of Auburn received a 9.75 for her vault. Bama scores a 49.50 and has a running score of 98.45. Auburn scored 48.625 on the vault and has a 97.425 total.

[ top... ]
Andree Pickens just brought       [ 2:51 AM, 02/10/02 ]

the crowd into it with a 10.00 routine! The crowd is up on their feet cheering loudly with a well-deserved ovation.

[ top... ]
Raegan Tomasek is up next on the bars       [ 2:49 AM, 02/10/02 ]

for the Tide, with beautiful uprise giant work and legs that are extended with perfect toe point, and she rocks the landing of a double front, chest high (proud smile on her face!). She gets a 9.95!

[ top... ]
Jeana Rice       [ 2:46 AM, 02/10/02 ]

had a great routine going on the bars until she flexed her legs again on the release to the low bar and she had bent legs on another uprsie. She receives a 9.825 for a stupendous dismount of full in (one balance check on the landing). Cantrell gets a 9.725 for her vault while Lancaster gets a 9.60 for her vault. Tiffany Byrd just completed a very nice bars set, one foot check on the landing of her double tuck for a 9.825.

[ top... ]
Up first on vault is Mary Nell Pate       [ 2:39 AM, 02/10/02 ]

of Auburn, who throws a Yurchenko layout, which is worth a 9.80 if done perfectly. She takes a slight step on her landing, not much distance for a 9.55 final score. Sally Cantrell is up next, with a double twist, a 10.0 vault that is rarely done because of its difficulty. Hrozek gets a 9.675 for missing handstands and taking a step on her dismount.

[ top... ]
Moving to the uneven bars       [ 2:36 AM, 02/10/02 ]

Bama will obviously have to sit out Kristin Sterner. We are unsure of the status of her injury but know that she will not be returning on any event for the rest of this day. The Tide is preparing for their bars warm up but are looking over to where Kristin is at the other end of the arena as well to check on their comrade.

[ top... ]
Thome just hit       [ 2:34 AM, 02/10/02 ]

the ground as well on her double layout dismount (down to the knees)so she will have a major deduction (9.075 is her final score). Kristin is having ice put on her foot. Bama has a total score of 48.95 on the vault because Andree got a 9.90 for a magnificent vault, a truly amazing feat after seeing her teammate miss her vault right before her own run. Auburn has a bars score of 48.80. Stephanie Kite gets a 9.65 for her exhibition vault (front pike).

[ top... ]
Jeana Rice just       [ 2:29 AM, 02/10/02 ]

threw a beautiful Yurchenko full vault. Lancaster receives a 9.775 for her bars routine. Rice gets a 9.825 for her vault. Mary Nell Pate just completed her routine (Geinger release) but took several stumbling steps forward on her dismount of a double layout, earning a 9.65 for her efforts. Sally Cantrell just completed a nice bars routine and Kristin Sterner crashed her vault, missing the horse and landing face down. It took her several minutes for the trainers to check her before letting her get up and hop off with help. She receives an 8.95 for her vault. Andree Pickens just followed with her usual masterful performance of a Yurchenko full. Cantrell gets a 9.85 for her bars routine.

[ top... ]
Erin Holdefer       [ 2:27 AM, 02/10/02 ]

just nailed her vault (front pike) for a 9.825 and Littrell gets a 9.75 for her bars routine.

[ top... ]
Lauren has nice       [ 2:24 AM, 02/10/02 ]

form but takes a step forward on her landing of the front pike. Kristi Oppelt is up for the Tigers on bars and is doing a nice job, dismounting with a double pike after a reverse Hecht release. She gets a 9.775. Holdefer receives a 9.65 (no explanation, major discrepancy in the judging). Hrozek gets a 9.75.

[ top... ]
We are ready for competition after       [ 2:23 AM, 02/10/02 ]

our ladies get at least two touches on the vault. We will start with Lauren Holdefer.

[ top... ]
Nice front pike       [ 2:19 AM, 02/10/02 ]

by Lauren Holdefer during the three minute touch, and for Shannon. An awesome touch by Erin Holdefer.

[ top... ]
Sally Cantrell, fifth year       [ 2:17 AM, 02/10/02 ]

senior for Auburn is wearing a knee brace (suffered an ACL injury last year) but will be going on four events for the Tigers. Sarah Patterson is asking about the lighting, it still seems a bit dim. She wants the ladies to be at their safest, especially on vault warm-ups.

[ top... ]
Miss America 2002       [ 2:09 AM, 02/10/02 ]

has just sung the national anthem and the crowd is ready to roll! Auburn is dressed in navy blue with a white bodice and orange spangles around the collar. Alabama is in a bright red velveteen with silver swirls on the bodice.

[ top... ]
Auburn is being introduced       [ 2:06 AM, 02/10/02 ]

as their fans cheer their entrance. And now, the Alabama Crimson Tide enters the arena to a much louder roar of approval. The crowd is not large by Coleman Coliseum standards but we'll take it!

[ top... ]
The lights have gone down       [ 2:04 AM, 02/10/02 ]

and the BJCC is getting ready to rock with some awesome gymnastics! Sounds like a train coming! Sirens wailing and lights flashing! Look ahead at the signpost, it's...Tony Giles!

[ top... ]
Sarah Patterson       [ 1:56 AM, 02/10/02 ]

is decked out in a silver sequined jacket and black skirt while Jeff Thompson is sporting a buff colored jacket with black pants. That's your fashion report for this meet.

[ top... ]

On bars: Kristi Oppelt, Hannah Littrell, Cheryl Lancaster, Mary Nell Pate, Sally Cantrell, Kristin Thome. [ top... ]
The opening festivities       [ 1:44 AM, 02/10/02 ]

will include the singing of the national anthem by Miss America 2002. We do not see the huge "A" in the middle of the floor, so Bama will be using their entrance routine from last year. The Ten Troupe has several members showing up.

[ top... ]
The crowd is slowly coming       [ 1:38 AM, 02/10/02 ]

in. We are competing for fans in Birmingham against the World of Wheels Auto Show, Cinderella, and the Mercedes Marathon. The teams are departing the arena to get dressed and we have about 20 minutes until showtime!

[ top... ]
We have been told that Auburn will be without       [ 1:34 AM, 02/10/02 ]

freshman Lisa Clark and sophomore Erin Gettle for today's meet. Kristin Thome will be in the sixth position on the uneven bars for the Tigers. Freshmen Annie Jenkins and Courtney Puckett continue to recover from injuries and will not be back in the line up for at least another month, maybe longer.

[ top... ]
Bama has now finished on vault       [ 1:28 AM, 02/10/02 ]

and are practicing on the balance beam, where we saw their strongest team showing this past week at LSU. Raegan Tomasek just threw a beautiful flight series as did Tiffany Byrd and Shannon Hrozek.

[ top... ]
Andree is giving       [ 1:17 AM, 02/10/02 ]

Brion encouragement as she waits to vault. Lauren and Erin are looking strong in their warm ups. Sara Scarborough also is giving it the old college try on vault.

[ top... ]
Brion is vaulting       [ 1:12 AM, 02/10/02 ]

but seems to be favoring her left heel just a bit. Jeana Rice, Andree and the Holdefers are warming up as well. The trainer and Sarah are talking with Alexis about her heel and appear to be deciding whether to have her vault or hold out for floor only.

[ top... ]
A very nice double pike       [ 1:01 AM, 02/10/02 ]

from Lauren Holdefer on the floor. She is looking refreshed after staying out on Friday against LSU. Brion just suffered a little bit of a nasty spill on floor and is walking it off. These ladies endure a lot for their team.

[ top... ]
Bama continues to work on the       [ 12:55 AM, 02/10/02 ]

uneven bars and has now moved to the floor exercise mat as well. Natalie is working extra hard on her dismount, which cost her a tenth at LSU Friday night (she had a 9.95 routine going minimum until her landing required a step). Tiffany is looking polished on bars. Raegan will be sitting out on floor today while Natalie will possibly be exhibiting.

[ top... ]
Welcome to Birmingham       [ 12:44 AM, 02/10/02 ]

Tide fans, for a home meet (Alabama's) against the Auburn Tigers in the BJCC. We are watching the Tide warm up on the uneven bars and are pleased to report that Jeana Rice is warming up right along with them. Bama is dressed in Crimson velveteen sleeveless warm ups and Auburn is in crushed Orange with the Tiger eye logo.
