Thanks Bama Nation, all [ 8:59 AM, 02/15/02 ]

that traveled over for this exciting meet. The ladies are now congratulating each other on the floor and the crowd is dispersing. Bama is still building depth on each event, getting better each week. Highlights for this meet have to be Alexis Brion throwing her 10 vault and standing it up, and Shannon Hrozek on balance beam, standing her routine up despite the obvious nerves in front of a tough UGA crowd for the first time. Another great moment was Raegan Tomasek's leadership on the floor, going for the difficulty with her double front Arabian and a season high score of 9.925. Welcome back also to Jeana Rice for a great all around performance. We need the crowd to show up in big numbers next week against UF (Friday night) to welcome this team back. Hopefully, Sterner-meister will be back on board at that time as well. Love ya, Tide fans everywhere! Goodnight.

[ top... ]
The Tide faithful are yelling Roll Tide Roll [ 8:52 AM, 02/15/02 ]

and now the dawg fans are yelling as well (UGA!UGA!). Suzanne is addressing the crowd, thanking them for coming. Thanks for a great performance to the Alabama gymnasts, with Kristin Sterner out and new people put in some key positions. On vault, we have Cory Fritzinger and Chelsa Byrd in third place and Andree and Marline in first. On the uneven bars: second place for Rice, Pickens, Tomasek, first for Barrington. On beam: Marline in third, Jeana in second, Andree in first. On floor: Raegan and Loren in third, Alexis in second, Marline in first.

[ top... ]
Andree gets a 9.95! [ 8:46 AM, 02/15/02 ]

Marline Stephens is finishing up for the Dawgs on floor. She has a new routine dance wise, this was alot more entertaining than the one she threw in Tuscaloosa back in January. Marline gets a 9.975. UGA gets a 49.475 on floor and a 197.200. Alabama finishes with a 196.950 due to the errors on balance beam. However, we had a sophomore and a freshman in pressure situations and they will do better next time. Jeana Rice wins the all around with a 39.525! Yippee!

[ top... ]
Fritzinger gets [ 8:43 AM, 02/15/02 ]

a 9.80, again the deductions were likely taken for form and execution errors. Andree Pickens is now up for the Tide to close out our beam performance. She is through her leap combination and now has the flight series. Perfect! Awesome punch front as well! She nailed the double tuck dismount. Way to go!

[ top... ]
Jeana Rice gets a 9.925! [ 8:41 AM, 02/15/02 ]

Cory Fritzinger is up next on floor. She throws a 2 1/2 with major leg separation on her opening pass, so deductions will come for not pulling it around (triple intended). She throws a double tuck on her second pass. She ends with a double twist that she pops forward out of.

[ top... ]
Perfect flight [ 8:39 AM, 02/15/02 ]

series from Jeana Rice, as well as her leap combination and her wolf full, her gymacro series looks great as well. Standing gainer and a stuck double twist dismount, what more could you ask for!!!

[ top... ]
Jeana Rice is up next [ 8:38 AM, 02/15/02 ]

and hopefully will go for the gusto to a huge score, cause we could use it! Byrd gets a 9.575 for her floor routine, so she must have gone out of bounds and the rest of the predicted deductions were correct as well.

[ top... ]
Alexa gets a [ 8:36 AM, 02/15/02 ]

9.75 for her beam routine. Chelsa Byrd just bounded backwards on her double layout and may have gone out of bounds. Second pass had form errors as well. She landed her double pike (third pass) low and forward, which will be a deduction as well.

[ top... ]
Alexa broke at the [ 8:34 AM, 02/15/02 ]

waist on her first Popa (straddle) but the rest of her routine was very fluid and solid (flight series was gorgeous, back handspring to a layout). She will suffer at least 2 to 3 tenths for the bend at the waist.

[ top... ]
Alexa Martinez is up [ 8:33 AM, 02/15/02 ]

next on the beam. Simpson gets a 9.925 for her floor routine.

[ top... ]
Simpson is on the floor [ 8:32 AM, 02/15/02 ]

and opens with a nice double pike. Hrozek gets a 9.575 for a shaky routine that she nevertheless stood up. She will grow from this experience.

[ top... ]
Shannon Hrozek [ 8:30 AM, 02/15/02 ]

is showing her nerves, bending at the waist on her leap onto the beam but she threw her flight series like a veteran (three elements). She had several balance checks as the crowd woo-wooed at her. She dismounted with a double twist and a hop on the landing.

[ top... ]
Tiffany gets a 9.175 [ 8:27 AM, 02/15/02 ]

for her beam routine. We have freshman Shannon Hrozek in the pressure cooker for this week and this will be a wonderful chance for her to prepare for Nationals. Emmons gets a 9.90.

[ top... ]
Tiffany is up on beam [ 8:25 AM, 02/15/02 ]

and falls on her flight series and several members of the student section stand up and cheer. She completes the rest of her routine with some balance checks that will be deducted as well. Tough crowd T-Bird, you'll get em next time! Michelle Emmons is up next and throws her double layout with an exclamation point!

[ top... ]
Tiffany Byrd is now up for the [ 8:23 AM, 02/15/02 ]

Tide on the beam. Vexler gets a 9.875 for her floor routine.

[ top... ]
Vexler is up on the [ 8:22 AM, 02/15/02 ]

floor and opens with a super high double pike. Nice music! Raegs gets a 9.85 for her beam routine. Vexler finishes with a great second double pike. The crowd erupts!

[ top... ]
Raegan Tomasek is [ 8:16 AM, 02/15/02 ]

up first and just threw her front punch, as well as her flight series of back handspring, layout, back handspring. Her leap series looked great, her 1/4 back dive to handstand was right on and she had a great front walkover, as well as dismount of gainer full off the side of the beam. Great way to set us up, Raegs!

[ top... ]
Wait a minute, it looks like [ 8:13 AM, 02/15/02 ]

a score increase occurred on Emmons of UGA from a 9.80 to a 9.825. So UGA is 147.725 and UA is at 147.900.

[ top... ]
Calling Salto, come in Salto! [ 8:10 AM, 02/15/02 ]

We are now moving to the balance beam with a .2 lead over the GymDawgs and we need fortitude, we need bravery, but most of all, we need at least five stuck routines to get the type of scores to match UGA on the floor. No nerves allowed for this rotation, so gut check yourself at the door.

[ top... ]
Alexis Brion is now up [ 8:05 AM, 02/15/02 ]

for Bama with her electric routine, awesome double tuck on her opening pass and she nailed each of her final two passes with a huge smile for the judges enroute. The Georgia fans started booing at the end of her routine because they are not pleased with Cory's score on beam (9.775). She had several balance checks throughout the routine, which can be deducted as much as one tenth each. Perhaps she also left out a required element. Alexis Brion gets a 9.95 for her stupendous routine! Lauren Holdefer is exhibiting on the floor and did a double tuck on her first and second passes. Alabama has a total on floor of: 49.450 and running score score 147.900. UGA has a 49.250 on beam and a running score of 147.700.

[ top... ]
Cory Fritzinger [ 8:04 AM, 02/15/02 ]

is up on beam and is bobbling on several leap combos but dismounts with a double twist to the crowd's delight.

[ top... ]
The student section crowd actually [ 7:57 AM, 02/15/02 ]

clapped at the end of Michelle Reeser's routine to "Devil Went Down to Georgia" . Marline Stephens gets a 9.90 for her beam routine. Reeser gets a 9.85 for her floor routine. There were no major deductions that we could determine but she was slightly off her music at two points. Raegan Tomasek is up on the floor and just threw that double front Arabian right through the roof. You go girl! Great routine, no major deductions. Bair just got a 9.875 on the beam, so UGA is fighting tough, not giving up an inch. Tomasek gets a 9.90.

[ top... ]
Stephanie Kite [ 7:56 AM, 02/15/02 ]

gets a 9.85 for her floor routine. Stephens is very deliberate and measured in her skills on beam and dismounts with a double tuck, one shuffle back on the landing, so she should score well. Michelle Reeser is up next for Bama.

[ top... ]
Rutherford is off [ 7:52 AM, 02/15/02 ]

the beam with a complete routine, only obvious deductions likely for some hesitancy on her leap combinations and very low amplitude on the wolf 3/4. Stephanie Kite is now up for the Tide on floor, with the same opening pass of front through to a double twist, which she nails chest high. She is through her second pass as well (front handspring, front full to a front layout) and completes her last pass with a big smile and a salute to the fans. Rutherford gets a 9.85 for her beam. Stephens is now up on beam to some hippy hoppy funky music.

[ top... ]
Alexa opens with a [ 7:50 AM, 02/15/02 ]

front through to a double twist (and nails it!). And now her front through to two front layouts for her second pass are done beautifully. Nice dance sequence, a roundoff to a double twist for her third pass is complete and now she will finish with a front through to a round off to layout stepout. Vexler gets a 9.825 for her beam routine. Rutherford is up next and she just completed a solid flight series with a huge smile. Alexa gets a 9.875! Way to go!

[ top... ]
Alexa Martinez [ 7:47 AM, 02/15/02 ]

is up next on floor for the Tide and Talya Vezler is on beam for UGA. Jeana gets a 9.85 on floor! Yippee! Her first floor routine since January and she gets us started off in a grand way. Vexler has had several balance checks but is overall steady on the beam and now is off to the hearty cheers of her fans.

[ top... ]
Michelle Emmons [ 7:43 AM, 02/15/02 ]

is very confident on beam, throwing a flight series of two back handsprings to a layout and a punch front to a sissone leap. She has rather loose form throughout but certainly attacks it, dismounting with a running front full. Jeana is through her double pike (step back to check her landing) and her whip to a 2 1/2 twist was gorgeous! Nice leap series and she finishes with a double twist. Roll Tide Roll! Emmons gets a 9.800.

[ top... ]
Bama moves to the [ 7:36 AM, 02/15/02 ]

floor execise and UGA is on the great equalizer, balance beam. They're now shooting the audience with tee-shirts! Jeana Rice will start us off on the floor exercise and Michelle Emmons will go for UGA on the balance beam.

[ top... ]
Erin Holdefer [ 7:31 AM, 02/15/02 ]

just received a 9.875 for her stupendous vault. We are now waiting for the electrifying Andree Pickens but Eileen Diaz has to go first for the GymDawgs. She just missed three handstands and took a step backwards on her full twisting layout dismount. She gets a 9.800. Andree just completed a great vault with a micro scoot on the landing for a 9.975 (awesome height, distance and form). Bama gets a 49.250 on the vault. Bama has a 98.450 running score. Cory just completed a solid if not spectacular bars routine (missed several handstands, a little leg separation and she stepped out of her full out dismount). She receives a 9.825. UGA has a team total of 48.95 on the bars and the running score is the same as Bama's, a 98.450.

[ top... ]
Erin Holdefer [ 7:30 AM, 02/15/02 ]

just threw a perfect front pike, great height and distance. The GymDawg fans are silent but you can hear the Bama Nation! Roll Tide Roll!

[ top... ]
Stephens got a 9.025 [ 7:28 AM, 02/15/02 ]

for her bars routine. Chelsa Byrd is up next. This was not her best routine, since she had some form deductions and bent her knees slightly on her Tkatchev, as well as piking down the layout dismount, with a step on the landing. She gets a 9.825.

[ top... ]
Jeana Rice just [ 7:27 AM, 02/15/02 ]

threw her Yurchenko full and took a small hop backwards and receives a 9.90! Way to go, we needed that vault!

[ top... ]
Alexis Brion [ 7:25 AM, 02/15/02 ]

just threw her pike 1/2, with super explosion but a major hop to the left on landing, so this will be a major deduction. Bair gets a 9.75 for her bars. Stephens just tried the Shaposhnikova release and promptly went off the low bar when she failed to get enough rise. She returns to the bars and completes the routine with a full in dismount and a step on the landing. Brion gets a 9.75 for her vault, congratulations Alexis!

[ top... ]
Shannon Hrozek is [ 7:21 AM, 02/15/02 ]

going to vault first for the Tide, throwing a front pike, which she lands beautifully with the tiniest of hops. On bars, Loren Simpson is up for the Dawgs, just misses a few handstands, lands her double tuck chest low and takes a hop forward. Shannon gets a 9.75 for her vault. Lauren Holdefer just vaulted her front pike and took one large step forward on the landing. Lauren gets a 9.70. Simpson gets a 9.75. Cassie Bair just threw a Tkatchev, missed a few handstands as well and takes a step backwards on her double tuck dismount.

[ top... ]
Lauren Holdefer [ 7:18 AM, 02/15/02 ]

is working the vault and Jeana did not like that last vault run (looked like there was something wrong with the placement of the springboard or the mat). She chatted with Coach Patterson about it and will take one more run before the competition.

[ top... ]
What's that? Oh, we're actually [ 7:16 AM, 02/15/02 ]

going to finish this meet? Allright! Now we have remote trucks on the floor exercise contesting for fastest plastic model in Athens, USA! This vies with the Auburn blimp that flys around their arena dropping coupons for the lucky attendees.

[ top... ]
Well, our coaches have [ 7:10 AM, 02/15/02 ]

now fallen asleep against the vault so someone will have to wave a feather underneath their nose because we are still introducing the UGA alumni. Bama is trying to stay warmed up by running up and down the vault trail.

[ top... ]
UGA is introducing their [ 7:07 AM, 02/15/02 ]

alumni from past Dawg gymnastic teams. We will now pause for the next twenty minutes.

[ top... ]
Breanne Rutherford [ 7:06 AM, 02/15/02 ]

did an exhibition vault and received a 9.150 (Hristakieva)for sitting it down.

[ top... ]
Cory Fritzinger [ 7:01 AM, 02/15/02 ]

just threw a solid Hristakieva and got a 9.925 for a small foot shuffle. Andree just completed four major release moves (Shaposhnikova, Hindorff, Tkatchev, to name three) and got awesome height and distance on her landing of a full in, small step on the landing, for a 9.85. She missed at least one handstand. Natalie just threw her best routine of the year and nailed her double tuck dismount chest high, and she receives a whopping 9.90. Marline Stephens received a 9.975 for her vault. Alabama has a 49.200 on the bars and UGA a 49.500 on vault.

[ top... ]
Jeana Rice gets [ 6:57 AM, 02/15/02 ]

a 9.85 for a great routine. Byrd just threw a very nice Tsuk full twist for a 9.925 but she hopped backwards, and that should have been a deduction of at least one tenth. The crowd loved it regardless. Raegan Tomasek just threw one of her best bars routines, nailing her landing of a double full, reaching each handstand and her beautiful Jaeger release. She gets a 9.85.

[ top... ]
Jeana Rice just [ 6:55 AM, 02/15/02 ]

threw a gorgeous routine, nailing her handstands and her dismount of a full in. Going for extra extension and toe point on the handstands. Chelsa Byrd is up next for the GymDawgs.

[ top... ]
Shannon Hrozek gets [ 6:54 AM, 02/15/02 ]

a 9.75 for her routine. Jeana Rice is next on the bars. Bair gets a 9.825 for her vault (pike with a 1/2), deducted for taking two steps back.

[ top... ]
Michelle Emmons [ 6:52 AM, 02/15/02 ]

just vaulted a pike 1/2 and landed it very nicely. Tiffany Byrd gets a 9.75. Again, nothing major wrong with this routine but she does not rotate very fast, so maybe they deducted for that. Shannon Hrozek just threw a nice routine of a Geinger release out of a full pirouette but she missed two handstands (critical for maximum scoring) and yet landed her double tuck dismount without a step. Emmons gets a 9.85 for her vault.

[ top... ]
Diaz just threw [ 6:50 AM, 02/15/02 ]

a 9.80 start value vault, a Yurchenko layout. She landed it solidly. Tiffany Byrd is up for the Bama Nation on bars. She is through her Tkatchev release out of a full turn on the bars, all handstands thrown beautifully and she has one foot check on the landing. Diaz gets a 9.65 on her vault.

[ top... ]
All of the fans are [ 6:48 AM, 02/15/02 ]

definitely not here yet, must be late arriving. We see many empty seats. This is a small, contained arena that is very loud. Eileen Diaz is up first for the Dawgs!

[ top... ]
The Tide faithful is yelling as loud as [ 6:47 AM, 02/15/02 ]

possible but UGA is keeping the music going as long as possible before the first vault. We have about forty fans here and they are in the corner down low near the bars, so the gals can hear them and wave to them!

[ top... ]
Shirts are being thrown [ 6:46 AM, 02/15/02 ]

through the arena so watch out below. Time for the competition! Oh, wait, Cory has to have one more run on the vault.

[ top... ]
It looks like senior [ 6:44 AM, 02/15/02 ]

Eileen Diaz wll be vaulting tonight for UGA, along with Breanne Rutherford and Chelsa Byrd.

[ top... ]
Suzanne is leading the [ 6:43 AM, 02/15/02 ]

Bulldog chant with the student section. She wants lots of noise tonight to cheer on her team. Bama loves this competitive atmosphere and will try to feed off any boos or whistles that may come their way tonight.

[ top... ]
UGA is wearing [ 6:41 AM, 02/15/02 ]

a black velveteen bodice with white netting on the shoulders, cropped with a red trim around the collar and rows of spangles on the front. Alabama is wearing a deep cranberry velveteen with starbursts on the front.

[ top... ]
And now, for the [ 6:36 AM, 02/15/02 ]

coach's fashion report. We have Suzanne wearing a black skirt, hunter's red jacket and black shoes with a contrasing wedge heel. Sarah is wearing a solid black beaded skirt with matching silk jacket.

[ top... ]
Ah, the American Flag is leading [ 6:35 AM, 02/15/02 ]

the way for the UGA GymDawgs. They are in red and black outerwear with sparkles. "Some Like It Hot" is being played as they are introduced under the GymDogs sign.

[ top... ]
The UGA [ 6:31 AM, 02/15/02 ]

fans in the student section to our left are yelling either "Feed Us" as our ladies are each introduced or, "Beat Us". We prefer the latter, and hope we can accomodate them shortly. This is certainly an interesting chant.

[ top... ]
On the floor exercise [ 6:29 AM, 02/15/02 ]

Bama will go with: Jeana Rice, Shannon Hrozek, Stephanie Kite, Michelle Reeser, Raegan Tomasek, Alexis Brion.

Balance Beam: Raegan Tomasek, Tiffany Byrd, Shannon Hrozek, Alexa Martinez, Jeana Rice, Andree Pickens.

[ top... ]
We have the official line up [ 6:27 AM, 02/15/02 ]

for UA, which could change after the three minute warm ups on each event, and there are some new faces.

Uneven Bars: Tiffany Byrd, Shannon Hrozek, Jeana Rice, Raegan Tomasek, Andree Pickens, Natalie Barrington.

Vault: Shannon Hrozek, Lauren Holdefer, Alexis Brion, Jeana Rice, Erin Holdefer, Andree Pickens.

[ top... ]
Five minutes to go [ 6:26 AM, 02/15/02 ]

and the lights are being turned off (the upper level is in the dark anyway). The BullDawg Mascot (aka Harry) just kicked a lighting technician in the foo foo! What kind of mascots are they hiring in Athens these days? Big Al would be suspended if he did that.

[ top... ]
There are jugglers on the floor [ 6:13 AM, 02/15/02 ]

and the huge Bulldog mascot is flirting with the judges (not allowed!). Salto, call the NCAA! Oh, wait, here is the UGA mascot and the blow up balloon Bulldog fighting on the floor exercise (he looks like the Nebraska Husker Boy). They are now doing sumo wrestling with each other and the more athletic mascot (with the spiked necklace) is outdoing his balloon counterpart. Coach Yoculan will do just about anything to attract a crowd! Now they are competing with each other with handstands on the floor. This sight is scary folks, so be glad you're not here!

[ top... ]
Andree is having fun on the beam [ 6:04 AM, 02/15/02 ]

and looks like she will be throwing the double tuck dismount again this week. Less than three minutes in the final warm up and then we will be getting ready to rumble!

[ top... ]
Thirty minutes until showtime [ 5:54 AM, 02/15/02 ]

and Bama is warming up on beam while the Dawgs are on floor. Chelsa Byrd will be on floor this week for UGA. We may see Shannon Hrozek in the line up on beam for Bama. Jeana Rice is looking confident on beam during final warm-ups. We will need a strong all around performance from her tonight with Kristin Sterner sitting the meet out to rest that ankle.

[ top... ]
The meet is reportedly [ 5:52 AM, 02/15/02 ]

sold out for tonight so we expect to hear some loud "wooof-wooofs" from the partisan Dawg crowd. We just saw a beautiful pike 1/2 from Alexis Brion, much more confidence this week in her warm-ups. And a big smile for her teammates!

[ top... ]
Jeana Rice is [ 5:50 AM, 02/15/02 ]

vaulting the Yurchenko full and a 1/1. She has also vaulted a Yurchenko 1 1/2. Andree just vaulted a Yurchenko full.

[ top... ]
Bama is warming up [ 5:49 AM, 02/15/02 ]

on vault, including Alexa Martinez. She throws a tuck with a half twist, worth a 9.90. Lauren and Erin Holdefer are vaulting front pikes. Alexis Brion is vaulting a front pike and a pike with a 1/2 twist.

[ top... ]
Laura Brion also told us [ 5:38 AM, 02/15/02 ]

that she particularly likes the fashion reports we give here on the website. You know we always want to please our fans and give them the full panorama of a gymnastics meet, which includes the latest fashions that our coaches and gymnasts are promoting. Currently, UGA is wearing black cropped shorts and black halter tops for warm ups. UA is in crimson velveteen, sleeveless with starbursts on the bodice.

[ top... ]
We met up with Laura Brion and [ 5:36 AM, 02/15/02 ]

Alexis' brother Dan in the parking lot, tailgating with the Tide faithful. She is hopeful that Alexis' father will be able to surface from the deep by Nationals to watch his favorite gymnast perform. Imagine, not having more than 15 minutes every few weeks to scan the internet to see what's going on with your favorite team. Salto would be in a coma by that time!

[ top... ]
Well, Tide fans, we have finally arrived! [ 5:31 AM, 02/15/02 ]

Kathy Johnson, ESPN analyst and USA Bronze Medalist on the beam at the 1984 Olympics, came by to chat with us about our on line commentary. Apparently she frequently goes on line to check out the details regarding Bama's routines and she particularly was curious about who Salto is! We chuckled and quickly informed her that Salto is one of the Tide's most faithful fans and our website "reference point" or touchstone whenever we are in a tense moment (like on the balance beam). She thought he was a world famous person she had never heard of or was a Bama coach! Delightful!

[ top... ]
Welcome to Bulldawg Country [ 5:22 AM, 02/15/02 ]

Alabama fans! The Crimson Tide is warming up on the uneven bars and floor exercise. Boy, you should have seen the look on the UGA gymnasts' faces as they were warming up vault and heard the music "Devil Went Down to Georgia" being warmed-up for Michelle Reeser. That's okay, Cory's floor routine last year with Sweet Home Alabama was done in fun, so we know the Dawgs will think the same of Michelle's routine. Kristin Sterner is here in a boot and walking around. Kinsey Rowe of UGA is in a boot and on crutches. Sierra Sapunar of UGA is out for this meet with a strained achilles tendon.
