Attendance tonight [ 8:56 AM, 02/22/02 ]

was 7,695 but again we're competing with swimming, baseball, and tennis tonight. Roll Tide! We will have more details on each routine in the post meet commentary. Congratulations to freshman Shannon Hrozek for a great all around score.

[ top... ]
Brion receives [ 8:43 AM, 02/22/02 ]

a 9.95! Yahoo! Lauren Holdefer is now exhibiting on the floor. She nails that double pike and then a double tuck on her second pass! This is the best she's looked so far this year on these two passes. Way to go! She receives a 9.825. Bama gets a 49.475 on the floor and finishes with a 196.925. Shannon Hrozek wins the all around with a 39.250 (Dreger and Waterhouse in second and third respectively). Another great score considering this week we were once again without Kristin Sterner (ankle sprain) and Jeana Rice on three events. Andree Pickens was warming up her passes on the floor exercise and we may see her prior to the SEC championships on this fourth event. She looks great! Florida finishes with a 194.95.

[ top... ]
Tomasek gets a 9.95 [ 8:41 AM, 02/22/02 ]

for her routine. Brion is selling her routine with lots of new dance moves (enticing the Ten Troupe to boogie with her). She is through all three passes and the crowd is mesmerized! Carow gets a 9.100 for her beam routine and Dooley a 9.825.

[ top... ]
Reeser changed [ 8:35 AM, 02/22/02 ]

her second pass (inserted her third pass for her second). Let's see what she closes with. Ah, her second pass is now her third pass (front handspring front layout whip 1/2 to a layout stepout). The crowd adores her! Waterhouse gets a 9.300 for her beam routine. Carow is now off the beam on her flight series (was off her second element). Raegan Tomasek is up next. Reeser gets a 9.90. Tomasek just nailed her double front Arabian! The second and third passes look just as solid, so there should be no major deductions. Dooley mounts with a punch front to wolf jump, solid! Her subsequent three leap series is low in amplitude and has a hesitancy in between the second and third leap, so she may not get full credit. She is attacking the beam and lands a super solid punch front. This is what you like to see from your last competitor in the line-up regardless of the previous performances.

[ top... ]
Waterhouse just [ 8:33 AM, 02/22/02 ]

fell on her mount (roundoff back layout onto the beam) but throws a very nice flight series with panache! She has even better form this year and is going for extension and toe point. Two pike leap series is difficult but she got little amplitude and legs were split throughout. She dismounts with a double tuck and a hop forward. Martinez gets a 9.35 for her floor routine. Michelle is up!

[ top... ]
Dreger gets a [ 8:26 AM, 02/22/02 ]

9.675. Stephanie finishes with extra oomf on her final pass and the crowd cheers her efforts with elacrity! Szmuch bobbles on her difficult flight series (lifts leg and does a jig even) but stays on. Lots of nice difficulty (side somi) and she is very confident throwing a beautiful side switch leap. She falls on her double tuck dismount (looked fatigued on the deep knee landing). Kite gets a 9.825 on the floor. Hrozek is up next with her saucy Salsa routine. She nails the opening double pike pass and her second pass as well. She is selling this routine to the Ten Troupe big time! Nice double turn to immediate straddle Popa. She had a tiny over step on her double twist and had to rush into her last dance steps, consequently was off her music a bit at the ending. Szmuch gets a 9.200 for her beam routine. Miner is on with a punch front. She has some nice difficulty as well, three leap series of switch leap wolf jump to a 3/4 straddle. Alexa Martinez just fell on her opening pass (front through to a double) but returns for a solid second pass (front handspring to two layouts), her double twist middle pass and nails her final pass. The crowd stays with her all the way! Miner gets a 9.825 for her beam.

[ top... ]
Stephanie Kite is up on the [ 8:25 AM, 02/22/02 ]

floor and nails her front through to a double twist! Awesome landing on this first pass as well as her second.

[ top... ]
Thompson gets a 9.925 [ 8:19 AM, 02/22/02 ]

on the floor and UF has a running score of 147.125, UA 147.450. Dreger starts off on the balance beam. There was a .15 discrepancy in the beam score on Natalie Barrington (9.70 and a 9.85), hence Coach Patterson's inquiry. No change in the final score. Dreger dismounts with two back handsprings and a single twist, one step to the side.

[ top... ]
Reeser [ 8:14 AM, 02/22/02 ]

is up on the beam for an exhibition routine. She falls on the third element of her flight series (two footed back handspring, layout, back handspring). Leaps look good and she threw a two leap series into a Korbut fish flop. Nice routine!

[ top... ]
Miner gets a 9.875 [ 8:12 AM, 02/22/02 ]

for her floor routine. Bama just went six for six on the beam! Way to go! Thompson is on the floor to Latin Drums music, very catchy. She had two whips to a back handspring to a double pike for her opening pass and then dances a bit before throwing a double pike on her second pass. Pickens gets a 9.90 for her beam routine. Thompson throws a 2 1/2 to a punch pike and lands it very nicely. Awesome routine!

[ top... ]
Jeana Rice gets a 9.90! [ 8:10 AM, 02/22/02 ]

The crowd likes Miner's floor routine to The Avengers. Andree is now up on the beam. She has her flight series done, a beautiful front punch and will dismount with a double tuck, which she nails! Gorgeous!

[ top... ]
Kara Waterhouse [ 8:05 AM, 02/22/02 ]

throws a 2 1/2 twist to a punch front and then comes back with a double pike (slight split of the legs and a step back almost onto the line). Great dance and presentation to Elvis' music medley. There's that Gator chop! She finishes with a double tuck, very loose form and a step forward on the landing. Barrington gets a 9.775 and Coach Patterson is now submitting a scoring inquiry for either this routine or Martinez's. Jeana just threw her flight series of two layouts, no problems. Leaps look good as does the standing back layout. She dismounts with a double twist and nails it! That's five solid routines in the box! Waterhouse gets a 9.875, she had the difficulty but they deducted for loose form on at least two of her passes. Miner just threw a double pike for her opening pass and a double tuck on her second pass.

[ top... ]
Jenny Carow [ 8:02 AM, 02/22/02 ]

is up on floor and threw a nice double pike as her opening pass. Front handspring, front with a half, layout stepout for her second pass. Martinez gets a 9.775 for her beam routine, can't figure this score out. Natalie Barrington is now up. She threw a beautiful flight series of back handspring to layout and a three leap series (switch leap to two straddle jumps). Looks like Khorkina up there; now the cartwheel is completed, and the switch leap to Korbut (fish flop) and she nails the dismount. Awesome routine! Carow gets a 9.80 on the floor.

[ top... ]
Martinez is now up on the [ 8:01 AM, 02/22/02 ]

beam and just threw two nice straddle leaps and her head roll to stag leap. Her flight series is beautiful, as is her straddle Popa and the wolf Popa (one slight lift of the leg on the latter). A switch leap to wolf jump and a cartwheel and she nails her dismount of a gainer off the side. Beautiful form throughout. She really concentrated on this routine for the big score tonight. Dooley gets a 9.825 on floor.

[ top... ]
Dreger gets [ 7:59 AM, 02/22/02 ]

a 9.725. Dooley just opened with a solid double pike, followed by a front handspring front layout front tuck (a standard second pass this year for lots of teams). She finishes with a front through to a full. Hrozek gets a 9.825!

[ top... ]
Freshman Shannon Hrozek is [ 7:57 AM, 02/22/02 ]

now up on the beam for the Tide. Beautiful flight series completed. Gymacro of switch leap to back walkover. Some small bobbles on a few of her leap series but she is showing much better composure than last week. She dismounts with a double twist and a huge smile.

[ top... ]
Krissy Dreger is up first [ 7:55 AM, 02/22/02 ]

on floor for UF to some funky music. She just threw a double and a second pass of front handspring to front layout to front tuck. Tomasek gets a 9.85 to start us off well on the beam. Dreger finishes with a double twist.

[ top... ]
Raegan Tomasek is up [ 7:53 AM, 02/22/02 ]

on the beam first for the Tide. She nails her punch front mount as well as her flight series. Solid leap series and a front walkover. Awesome 1/4 dive to handstand (really held the handstand position beautifully). Great routine!

[ top... ]
The Tide scored a 49.225 [ 7:49 AM, 02/22/02 ]

on the uneven bars, running score of 98.200 and UF scored a 48.875 on vault, running score of 97.825. Bama needs six stupendous routines on the beam.

[ top... ]
Miner of UF gets [ 7:48 AM, 02/22/02 ]

a 9.90 for her vault. Dooley was replaced in the vault line up by Dreger. Pickens gets a 9.90 for her bars routine.

[ top... ]
Raegan Tomasek [ 7:43 AM, 02/22/02 ]

had a great routine on bars going but sat down her dismount, first of this season. She scores a 9.175. Martinez gets a 9.800! Natalie just nailed her bars routine, including the dismount of a double tuck! Dreger of UF gets a 9.775 for her double twist vault. Lindsey Miner just nailed her pike 1/2 but will be deducted for going in flat and not getting much height. She has an electric smile! Natalie gets a 9.875 for a stupendous routine. Andree caught her Hindorff release a little too close but does not miss a beat in her rhythm and also overextended her last handstand but recovers beautifully to nail her full in dismount. The crowd erupts!

[ top... ]
Tiffany Byrd is up next [ 7:39 AM, 02/22/02 ]

on bars for the Tide. She slightly misses two handstands but nails her double tuck dismount as well (and the Tkatchev release looked very good). Schatz gets a 9.70 for her vault and Thompson just threw a pike 1/2 but again there was leg separation and she hopped to the right on the landing, so that will be a deduction as well. Byrd gets a 9.85 on bars and Alexa Martinez just threw her first bars routine of her four years here at UA! Very nice, tight form throughout, a super Tkatchev but she took a hop forward on her double layout dismount. The crowd was thrilled for her nonetheless and cheered loudly! Thompson gets a 9.65 for her vault and Szmuch just threw her Hristakieva but hopped out of it for a 9.800.

[ top... ]
Waterhouse [ 7:38 AM, 02/22/02 ]

gets a 9.70 for her vault. Kim Schatz is up next for the Gators. Hrozek gets a 9.80 for her bars. Schatz vaults a front pike, lands it forward, deep knee bend.

[ top... ]
Kara Waterhouse [ 7:35 AM, 02/22/02 ]

starts off for UF on vault. She throws a front pike with a hop forward and some leg separation on the entry. Shannon misses her first handstand but completes her routine with confidence, including the Geinger release and lands her best double tuck of the season! Wow!

[ top... ]
Shannon Hrozek will start [ 7:32 AM, 02/22/02 ]

us again, this time on bars. UF is at 48.950, so .025 behind the Tide. Orley Szmuch received a 9.85 for her bars routine.

[ top... ]
Stephanie Kite [ 7:28 AM, 02/22/02 ]

gets a 9.675 for her vault, so this one will be dropped. The Tide has a running score of 48.975 on the vault.

[ top... ]
Stephanie Kite [ 7:27 AM, 02/22/02 ]

threw her pike 1/2 vault but takes several steps backwards. They changed Pickens vault score to a 9.975 and Pendleton gets a 9.800 for her bars routine.

[ top... ]
Hillary Thompson [ 7:26 AM, 02/22/02 ]

gets a 9.825, as does Waterhouse for her bars routine. Erin Pendleton just completed a very nice bars set, tight form, lovely release but took a small step on her double layout dismount. Pickens gets a 9.95 for a stupendous vault!

[ top... ]
Alexis Brion is next [ 7:23 AM, 02/22/02 ]

with her vault, a pike with a 1/2, which she stands up, one hop backwards (chest a little low as well on the landing). Way to go! Dooley receives a 8.00 for her bars routine. Kara Waterhouse is up on the bars and showing nice form and a straddle Jaeger release move but takes a step back on her double front dismount. Brion gets a 9.800 for her vault and Andree Pickens just nailed her vault!

[ top... ]
Dooley also [ 7:21 AM, 02/22/02 ]

fell on her dismount of a double tuck (fell forward to her hands and one knee). Erin Holdefer just vaulted a front pike for the Tide and receives a 9.7 (looks like she landed it forward with one leg bent). Hillary Thompson is through her first release and her Geinger release but is not reaching her handstands. She lands a solid double layout.

[ top... ]
Florida's senior [ 7:18 AM, 02/22/02 ]

Krissy Dreger is up first on bars. Nice handstands but a little loose on her Jaeger release and takes a hop forward on her dismount of a double tuck. Hrozek gets a 9.775, perhaps for not getting quite the distance she needs and a little split on the legs. Lauren Holdefer vaults her front pike and takes one step forward (excellent distance and height, nevertheless). Dreger gets a 9.65 on her bars routine and Erinn Dooley just fell on her Shaposhnikova (never made it off the low bar)and then tries it again and the same thing happens! This will be an automatic 1 full point off. Lauren Holdefer receives a 9.725.

[ top... ]
And now we start the meet with [ 7:17 AM, 02/22/02 ]

freshman Shannon Hrozek! She throws a front pike and nails the landing! Great way to get us started!

[ top... ]
And now, for your fashion report [ 7:14 AM, 02/22/02 ]

which is brought to you in honor of Medalist Club Favorites, Randy Howell and Laura Brion. The Florida Gators are wearing a solid black velveteen bodice with marine blue sleeves and orange trim around the collar. Alabama is attired in deep burgundy waffle weave sleeves with a corresponding burgundy velveteen bodice. Sparkles adorn both teams' front bodice. Coach Judi Markell of UF is wearing an orange dress ensemble and Coach Sarah Patterson is outfitted in a black silk jacket with a fur lined collar and a matching black skirt. Stephanie Kite just warmed up another pike 1/2! YOWSA!

The Gators are [ 7:01 AM, 02/22/02 ]

being introduced by Tony Giles, along with their coaches. The lights are completely out! Spooky! Welcome to the Big Show! Hey! Hey!

[ top... ]
Florida is [ 6:54 AM, 02/22/02 ]

looking relaxed during warm-ups and have definitely improved on the uneven bars since the Super Six Challenge. Erinn Dooley throws a similar mount onto the bars as Alabama's Kim Kelly did back between 1993-96 (roundoff back somersault over the low bar, catching it in mid-flight) but she adds a twist to her somersault, making it more difficult. These are the only two gymnasts that we have ever seen throw this type of mount. Dooley's version looks a little rough and she was having trouble during warm-ups on the release from the low to the high bar after this mount (Shaposhnikova) but is looking strong on vault and floor. She will be doing all around tonight.

[ top... ]
Jeana Rice [ 6:52 AM, 02/22/02 ]

had a rough week with three exams and is likely to go only on balance beam tonight, per Coach David Patterson. Her warm-ups on uneven bars and vault were definitely showing the effect of limited practice this week, so this may be the best bet. However, last year against Penn State in Happy Valley, she had a similar rough warm up on the bars but later went out and nailed her routine like a trooper, so you never know.

[ top... ]
We observed vault [ 6:51 AM, 02/22/02 ]

long warm-ups tonight and are happy to report several Tide gymnasts were throwing the pike 1/2, including Alexa Martinez! She stood this vault up both times and has very nice form throughout. David Patterson told us that she is throwing this vault now because "She likes to compete!" Alexis Brion stood her pike 1/2 up and her landing is more controlled this week. We also saw two nice pike 1/2s from Erin and Lauren Holdefer as well as Stephanie Kite.

[ top... ]
We are competing [ 6:50 AM, 02/22/02 ]

with the baseball team tonight but the chilly weather outside may drive them indoors to watch some fantastic gymnastics. UA is also competing tonight in swimming and a tennis match was going on as well.

[ top... ]
Happy Birthday [ 6:49 AM, 02/22/02 ]

to Medalist Club member Pamela Crowe. She and her hubby travel just about everywhere the Tide gymnasts go (including that wild competition last week in Athens, GA). Many more happy returns of the day, Pam!

[ top... ]
The Medalist Club [ 6:46 AM, 02/22/02 ]

has several Gold and Ruby members present tonight who are circulating the floor to observe warm-ups. A big Bama welcome to George Richardson (Gold Level Member), Marian and Mark Berkin (Ruby Level) and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Blake (Ruby) and their granddaughter Samantha. The Blakes reside in Memphis, Tennessee and have come quite a distance to see their favorite gym team in action. Former Tide great, Katie Hornecker, acted as their hostess tonigiht.

[ top... ]
Hello Bama Nation! [ 6:43 AM, 02/22/02 ]

The Alabama Gymnastics team is competing tonight at 7 pm against the Florida Gators. We have an update from Coach Sarah Patterson regarding Sara Scarborough, who underwent surgery at UAB Medical Center today to correct a heart condition, Wolf Parkinson White Syndrome, which is an extra electrical path in the heart, that in turn can cause an irregular heartbeat. Her surgery today was performed by Dr. Vance J. Plumb and was a complete success. She will be able to resume training within a week pending a favorable post-op exam. Get well soon Sara! Kristin Sterner is walking around without her boot now and was stretching on the floor with her teammates. She was already back on bars and beam this past week in the practice gym and is expected back by either the Kentucky or UCLA meet.
