Way to go Bama! [ 8:17 AM, 04/06/02 ]

We'll see you hopefully in a sold out Coleman Coliseum for the Nationals! Roll Tide and good night from West Virginia.

[ top... ]
Alexis Brion [ 8:08 AM, 04/06/02 ]

won the vault with Jeana Rice. Andree won the bars, Natalie was second and Rice and Hrozek were in third. Bama sweeps the balance beam with four gymnasts obtaining a 9.95, one a 9.925 and one a 9.90. The top six are called out for each event for regionals and only Bama's gymnasts get to go up since they swept the beam. Unprecedented! Andree won the floor with Mary Anne Kelley of Minnesota. In the all around, Jeana Rice captured first with a 39.625 a career record, followed in second by Andree and Raegan (39.300) and Mary Anne Kelley of Minnesota. Roll Bama!

[ top... ]
John Denver is singing [ 8:05 AM, 04/06/02 ]

again! Now we can feel some sentimentality, knowing this is the final regional competition with our wonderful seniors, who led the way tonight in a big way. Andree Pickens has been named the Regional Gymnast of the Year for the fourth year in a row!

[ top... ]
Bama has reentered the arena for the [ 7:58 AM, 04/06/02 ]

awards ceremony and the Bama Nation is pumped! They are on their feet cheering the team wildly as they rotate around the arena to salute the fans.

[ top... ]
Team finals are as follows... [ 7:53 AM, 04/06/02 ]

Bama: 197.900, Minnesota: 196.05, WVU: 194.85, North Carolina: 194.825, Kentucky: 194.225, Michigan State: 193.225.

[ top... ]
Coach Sarah Patterson [ 7:47 AM, 04/06/02 ]

is getting a bear hug by Bryan Raschilla. She now hugs her team and congratulates them for a wonderful performance overall and the beam in particular. Alabama and Minnesota will advance to nationals.

[ top... ]
Andree Pickens has things under control [ 7:43 AM, 04/06/02 ]

and she is showing it big time for the judges. She is through her leap series (switch leap to wolf), flight series (ff, ff, layout), and punch front and lands her double tuck dismount sky high! She receives a 9.95. Total score on the beam is a 49.725, a record for the Tide and maybe a new national record for regionals?? Bama has a final team score of 197.900.

[ top... ]
Kristin Sterner is [ 7:41 AM, 04/06/02 ]

back in rare form, throwing all of her difficulty (ff, ff, layout; straddle-straddle leap combo; side switch leap; wolf to standing back pike) and she will dismount with a double pike...and she nails it as well! Alabama is simply in a zone of the greatest magnitude on the balance beam right now. This happened in 1991 at the regionals in Auburn, for you historians, and it's happening here in Morgantown, eleven years later. Sterner gets a 9.95 as well.

[ top... ]
Jeana Rice is building on these stupendous routines [ 7:39 AM, 04/06/02 ]

by throwing a new three leap series this week (wolf jump, straddle, straddle) and a perfect flight series (ff, layout, layout); a wolf Popa; full turn; and she lands her double twist with a tiny scoot backwards. She gets a 9.95 as well! Of note: she replaced the gainer with her three leap series for this week.

[ top... ]
Alexa is through [ 7:36 AM, 04/06/02 ]

her two straddle leap series, her head roll (left out the stag jump out of this), flight series (ff, layout), and the straddle Popa followed by her wolf Popa, reaching for perfection on every move. And she nails her rudi dismount to the delight of her coaches who crush her in their embrace! The judges give her a well-deserved 9.95.

[ top... ]
Shannon Hrozek gets a 9.90! [ 7:35 AM, 04/06/02 ]

What grace, what perspicacity! Alexa Martinez is now up for the Tide. Yell loudly Bama Nation!

[ top... ]
Raegan Tomasek just [ 7:33 AM, 04/06/02 ]

got a 10 from one judge, a 9.95 from another and a 9.90 from another one! A final score of 9.925. What a great routine! She is being followed by our freshman Shannon Hrozek, who is through a beautiful flight series (ff, layout, ff), very nice leap series! She is now going to dismount with a double twist...one small step to the left.

[ top... ]
Raegan Tomasek will start [ 7:30 AM, 04/06/02 ]

us on the beam. She throws her punch front mount with confidence, no balance checks, and completes her flight series (ff, layout, ff) beautifully, as well as her leap series (switch leap to straddle leap)and her front walkover, 1/4 dive to handstand out of a wolf jump, full turn and now the dismount...and she nails it! Wonderful start for the team Raegs! Her parents are cheering loudly.

[ top... ]
They're playing Alexis Brion's music [ 7:21 AM, 04/06/02 ]

on the floor for the final individual competitor and the Tide fans are dancing in the stands in honor of Alexis! Bama is ready to get that beam done so they are practicing their moves on the mats near the bars in preparation as the final competitor finishes on floor. Now we can roll on!

[ top... ]
Alabama will move to the balance beam [ 7:20 AM, 04/06/02 ]

in the sixth rotation. North Carolina gets a 48.725 on the balance beam and ends with a 194.825 total score.

[ top... ]
Alabama has an uneven bars score of [ 7:15 AM, 04/06/02 ]

49.575 and a running score of 148.175. Minnesota scored a 48.975 on the vault and they finish with a team total of 196.050.

[ top... ]
Andree Pickens just [ 7:13 AM, 04/06/02 ]

put the nail in the coffin on a fantastic bars set! Going for every handstand and her four major release moves, nailing the full in dismount chest high after completing both rotations above the high bar. She wanted to make up for that missed vault to reassure the Tide fans. She receives a 9.975 (Two judges gave her a 10.00, two a 9.95).

[ top... ]
Natalie Barrington completes a [ 7:12 AM, 04/06/02 ]

gorgeous routine, nailing every handstand, her inverted giant and her Pak salto release and the double tuck dismount for a 9.95 (one slight foot check to balance the landing.

[ top... ]
Kristin Sterner [ 7:09 AM, 04/06/02 ]

threw both release moves but just missed two handstands (one after her first release and the second right before she went into her half turn before the double front dismount). She completed her double front dismount with one foot slightly back to balance and gets a 9.80. Raegan Tomasek threw her routine and looked pretty good until a small hop forward on her dismount of a double front. Her toe point and extension were exquisite but she just missed two handstands as well. She gets a 9.85.

[ top... ]
Shannon Hrozek just nailed her [ 7:07 AM, 04/06/02 ]

routine as well! What a great dismount of a double tuck out of a full turn on the high bar. Her cast to handstands were excellent and the Gienger release move was tight in form and high above the bar; the judges award her with a 9.90 as well.

[ top... ]
Jeana Rice is up first [ 7:04 AM, 04/06/02 ]

for Bama. She completes all handstands and her reverse giants with excellent toe point and extension and her Tkatchev release is very nice. She nails her full in dismount and receives a 9.90! One judge gave her a 9.95! Let's pour it on Bama!

[ top... ]
Bama is now moving to the uneven bars [ 6:56 AM, 04/06/02 ]

in the fifth rotation and we need to stay on, perfect every move and handstand and score big! You can do it Tide! Let's hear a roaring ROLL TIDE across the country for our team!

[ top... ]
Courtney Norman [ 6:52 AM, 04/06/02 ]

of Minnesota gets a 9.90 for a double layout first pass but she landed the double tuck on her final pass a little low and forward. Not much style or presentation in this routine, almost stoic, but good difficulty. Macrie of WVU gets a 9.85 for her beam routine, Boyd a 9.825. Mary Anne Kelley opened her floor routine for Minnesota with a tucked full in and has very nice dance and presentation. She receives a 9.95. Minnesota receives a 49.325 on the floor total and they have a running score of 147.075.

[ top... ]
Beuckens of Minnesota [ 6:43 AM, 04/06/02 ]

gets a 9.75 on the floor. Teshawne Jackson of WVU is struggling on her leap series and has to repeat it twice. She gets a 9.675. North Carolina is staying on the bars but whoops...just had a fall. Minnesota is trying to push their floor scores up with a 9.80.

[ top... ]
The first gymnast [ 6:35 AM, 04/06/02 ]

up for WVU gets a 9.70, the second a 9.675. Minnesota's first gymnast gets a 9.775. Beuckens of Minnesota has a very low landing on her final pass (double twist to a punch front) and will be deducted accordingly.

[ top... ]
Alabama has a bye [ 6:33 AM, 04/06/02 ]

and Michigan State moves to the vault, North Carolina to the bars, WVU to the balance beam and Minnesota to the floor.

[ top... ]
WVU has a bars score of 48.250 [ 6:26 AM, 04/06/02 ]

and a running score of 97.025. By the way, Dinorh Boyd of WVU fell twice on the uneven bars for an 8.4. She landed her release move on TOP of the high bar and then fell again on her dismount. Ouch!

[ top... ]
Oh, that was close! [ 6:21 AM, 04/06/02 ]

For the first time ever, Andree Pickens slipped her hand on the vaulting horse, had to adjust mid-air and tucked the vault instead of laying it out but she still drilled the landing! She is incredible! Unfortunately, she ended up doing the wrong vault so she gets a 9.425. The Tide receives a team total of 49.150 and a running score of 98.600.

[ top... ]
What a stupendous vault from Brion! [ 6:18 AM, 04/06/02 ]

Major hangtime and distance! She receives a 9.90. The Tide is vaulting very well tonight and Stephanie Kite just landed her pike 1/2 twist as well for a 9.725 but was bent low at the waist. Keep it up Bama! Andree Pickens is last up for the Tide!

[ top... ]
Jeana Rice just nailed her vault! [ 6:17 AM, 04/06/02 ]

Awesome! A yurchenko full and she receives a 9.90!

[ top... ]
We have a line-up change on the [ 6:11 AM, 04/06/02 ]

vault for the Tide, hence the delay in starting off. Erin Holdefer will still start and will throw a front pike. She lands it beautifully! One judge gave her a 9.90!!! She receives a final score of 9.825. Raegan Tomasek is up next for Bama. She throws a super pike with a 1/2 twist but has a split in her form and a hop to the right on the landing. She receives a 9.80. Jeana Rice is next.

[ top... ]
Kentucky got a 48.850 on the uneven bars. [ 6:09 AM, 04/06/02 ]

Michigan State is in sixth with a 47.925 (rough beam to start the meet). West Virginia has a 48.775. North Carolina has a 97.250 and Minnesota has a 97.750.

[ top... ]
The Tide has just completed another great team [ 6:05 AM, 04/06/02 ]

performance on the floor and we will now venture to the vault for hopefully even more powerful saltos (and stuck landings!). On the bars is WVU, Kentucky is on beam and Michigan State is on the floor. Minnesota is on a bye along with North Carolina.

[ top... ]
Minnesota has a 48.500 on the beam [ 6:03 AM, 04/06/02 ]

[ top... ]
Alexis Brion will up next [ 5:56 AM, 04/06/02 ]

on the floor for Alabama. Martinez receives a 9.85 for her routine. Brion completes her double tucks with great height and the Tide fans are on their feet cheering her on! Minnesota's fifth gymnast up received a 9.35.

[ top... ]
Raegan Tomasek is up next and [ 5:50 AM, 04/06/02 ]

she steps just outside the line with her double front arabian. Everything else looks great though. She will have an automatic one tenth taken off of her final score. She receives a 9.725 (a little low considering everything else looked great). Alexa Martinez is now through her first and second passes (she has FOUR!). Looking great so far. She finishes with a smile for the judge on the right. Minnesota is having trouble on the beam (a 9.40 for their fourth routine and their fifth gymnast just had a fall as well).

[ top... ]
Stephanie starts us off strong [ 5:46 AM, 04/06/02 ]

with a 9.85 and now Jeana Rice is up to push the scores up!!! She starts off with a super double pike and a huge smile. Her second pass of a whip to a 2 1/2 twist is landed sharply and she will finish up with a double twist. Minnesota's Opsahl has a 9.725 on the beam and Beuckens gets a 9.75 for her beam. Jeana Rice gets a 9.875!!! Yowza!

[ top... ]

Country Road, take me home, to the place... [ 4:54 AM, 04/06/02 ]

I belong....Alabama! Yeah, what a great song by the late John Denver but sentimentality will only get you so far. We're ready to rumble here in the Mountaineers' Gym and bring home another regional title Tide fans! Let's get fired up!

[ top... ]
Bama has lots of fans and parents here tonight! [ 4:43 AM, 04/06/02 ]

The Tomaseks, Laura Brion and about 60 plus from Virginia with her, the Barringtons, Diane Morgan, the Sterners, the Goles, Holdefers, several Medalist Club members, Bobbie Evans (Lexa's mom). The tailgate party was a huge success according to Rararuss!

[ top... ]
The Tide is now exiting the arena [ 4:35 AM, 04/06/02 ]

and Rararuss is leading the Bama faithful in cheering them as they depart. The WVU media turned up the country music to try and drown our fans out but it didn't work!

[ top... ]
Raegan Tomasek [ 4:27 AM, 04/06/02 ]

is working that punch front mount on the beam and Kristin Sterner is perfecting the double pike dismount in the final few minutes of this warmup period.

[ top... ]
Well Tide fans [ 4:24 AM, 04/06/02 ]

our ladies looked very graceful on the bars and have now moved to the balance beam, where they are showing even more grace! It looks like Kristin, Andree, Alexa, Raegan, Shannon, Jeana will get the nod tonight on beam, with Tiffany or Natalie in the alternate position.

[ top... ]
Roll Tide Roll from Morgantown, West Virginia! [ 4:13 AM, 04/06/02 ]

We have had a little snow up here overnight but it quickly melted as the sun broke through. The weather is crisp but the Tide is hot! We are watching our team warm up on the uneven bars after first going through the floor and vault. Tiffany Byrd is doing a marvelous job with her pirouettes and dismounts with a super double tuck.
