Now, onto the individual finals
[ 10:08 AM, 04/19/02 ]
tomorrow night, when Bama can relax and truly just have fun. Again, we have 11 first team All Americans and there will be alot of gymnastics to talk about this time tomorrow night. We are on our way to celebrate with the team and obtain some quotes for posting tomorrow. To all Bama fans who could not be here except in spirit you can catch it all on CBS next Sunday, April 28, at NOON central time. Post your congratulations to the team on the website. Roll Tide and goodnight from Coleman Coliseum!

Bama then left the best for the last...

again, putting together a marvelous balance beam set while UGA was on the floor trying to push forward and past the Tide to capture the championship. But Bama was not to be denied, having learned their lesson well at SECs. They posted another terrific score of 49.375 and the championship was theirs outright. The looks on the ladies' faces as they knew they had won after Kristin Sterner nailed her double pike dismount was awesome to behold. Andree Pickens put the icing on the cake with a 9.95 and the Tide finished with a spectacular 197.575 and a standing ovation from their loyal fans (they had already been standing for the last two beam routines, actually, ready to celebrate).

After a bye, Bama moved on to
[ 10:00 AM, 04/19/02 ]
the uneven bars, where they redeemed themselves in magnificent fashion from the opening session. Jeana Rice had a superb opening routine, and Miss Tiffany Byrd stepped up to throw one of the highest scoring routines of the night, a 9.90. What a trooper, always ready to step in and show her championship form once again in the most important meet of the year. The freshman, Shannon Hrozek, stepped up next and threw her best routine of the two nights, including a huge Gienger release and a stuck dismount. This set up Kristin Sterner (9.85), Natalie Barrington (9.875) and the team leader, Andree Pickens (9.95) for outstanding performances that resulted in a team score of 49.450.

On the vault, the Tide
[ 9:57 AM, 04/19/02 ]
scored higher than last night's opening session, with great vaults from Jeana Rice, Kristin Sterner, Alexis Brion and Andree Pickens. Stephanie Kite threw her 10.0 vault and Erin Holdefer rounded out with a strong opening front pike. Total on the vault was a 49.325.

Now for some great highlights
[ 9:55 AM, 04/19/02 ]
from the Tide's performance tonight. Starting on a bye and then moving to the floor exercise, Alabama had to make their mark on one of their best events early on. Great performances were thrown by sophomores Stephanie Kite and Jeana Rice to start off and Bama's signature routines by Sterner, Brion, and Pickens boosted the scores before sophomore Lauren Holdefer took Tomasek's place and posted a fantastic 9.875, throwing three double backs (one in the pike position). Bama scored a 49.425 on the floor and never looked back.

Returning from Atlanta, Georgia to
[ 9:53 AM, 04/19/02 ]
carry the banner once again in the NCAA Championships at home for Alabama was none other than Cameron Watson. If you will recall from the 1996 NCAAs, after Kim Kelly was waiting for her vault score to be posted, he is shown in the background on the highlight film and when she got the news that she had earned a perfect 10 for her vault, he leapt into the air, joining in the celebration with the ladies with hearty clapping. Cameron once again led the team out tonight to another championship, carrying the Alabama banner extra high, as if to anoint them as the only champions that would emerge from this night's battle. Thank you Cameron Watson and please be there again in five years!!!

ROLLLL TIDE ROLLLL!!!

Congratulations Bama Nation! You now have your FOURTH NATIONAL TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP IN GYMNASTICS!!!
PBA's emotions are so high right now we can barely settle back down to earth long enough to post this post-meet commentary. Suffice it to say, that we saw a truly awesome performance on all four events (24 for 24) from our ladies tonight, against the greatest competition ever in NCAA Gymnastics. There was no margin for error as the UGA Gymdawgs were using the Olympic rotation order to the ultimate advantage and they were heroic in their efforts but fortunately came up short against our ladies, in the most important meet of the year. Remember what Coach Patterson told the Bama Nation at the beginning of the year? Be patient, as she would be bringing this team along slowly but surely to ensure a healthy team by Nationals. Congratulations to her, David Patterson and Bryan Raschilla for a job truly well done.
