Session Two
Drawing the same event order as they did at the Southeast Regionals, Bama was once again eager to meet the challenge of ending on the balance beam in the final rotation. The Tide first had to sit out on a bye before going to the floor exercise. Solid opening routines by sophomore Stephanie Kite (9.80) and sophomore Jeana Rice (9.85) prepared the way for the dynamic tumbling of junior Kristin Sterner (9.900), senior Andree Pickens (9.925) and freshman Alexis Brion (9.925) before sophomore Lauren Holdefer moved confidently into injured senior Raegan Tomasek's position, posting a 9.85 for three very strong double backs (the first in the pike position). Bama started off with a team score on floor of 49.450 and never looked back.
On the vault, sophomore Erin Holdefer led off with her terrific front pike, landing it with no balance checks (9.85), followed by Stephanie Kite's pike with a 1/2 twist (9.75). Jeana Rice threw a super Yurchenko full twist (9.875) and Lauren Holdefer a too powerful front pike (9.70 for one large step forward). Alexis Brion (9.90) threw a magnificent pike 1/2 twist (major height and distance) and Andree Pickens responded in kind with a terrific Yurchenko full twist (9.90). Bama's total on vault was 49.275.
The Tide was out on another bye for rotation four and then addressed the uneven bars in rotation five, inserting sophomore Tiffany Byrd for Raegan Tomasek. While the team was not as crisp on this event as their first two, they still managed to haul in a respectable 49.025 total, highlighted by a strong opening routine from Jeana Rice (9.80), two steady performances by freshman Shannon Hrozek (9.75) and Tiffany Byrd (9.75), and a dynamic routine from Kristin Sterner (full twisting Tkatchev, Tkatchev, double front dismount) for a 9.775. These first four routines were marred only by small form errors and one step on the landings. Dismounts included a full in (Rice), and a full turn into a double tuck (Hrozek and Byrd). Senior Natalie Barrington completed her entire routine (1 1/2 turn, inverted giant, half turn to pak Salto release, full turn to immediate double tuck dismount) for a 9.85. Andree Pickens just brushed her chin on her Hindorff release but never stopped her momentum, enroute to throwing four major release moves (including a Shaposhnikova, Tkatchev, straddle back to handstand on the low bar) for a 9.85.
Bama moved confidently to the balance beam in rotation six and the partisan crowd eagerly cheered their efforts following each routine. Senior Alexa Martinez moved into the critical start off position and performed like she had been there all year long. Showing exquisite extension and toe point on her straddle-straddle combination to open up her routine, she then moved into a very nice head roll but left out the stag leap at the end of this signature move. Her flight series was solid (ff, layout) and she completed a straddle Popa and a wolf Popa with no problems. Finishing with a split leap - dance move - cartwheel combination, she then dismounted with a Rudi, taking a small hop on the landing for a 9.85. Shannon Hrozek performed a beautiful routine next (flight series of flic flac, layout, flic flac; split leap to flic flac; hitch kick to sheep jump; split leap to wolf jump) for a 9.875. Tiffany Byrd (9.85) was up next with variations in her routine that she has been working on for the last two months, including a split leap to two straddle jumps; switch leap to gainer layout; cartwheel; dismounting with a back handspring-layout-full twist off the end of the beam (she nailed her landing like a pro). Jeana Rice (9.925) was not to be denied either, throwing a wolf jump-straddle-straddle combination series, a beautiful flight series of flic flac, layout, layout and a wolf Popa; she also completed a sissone leap to back handspring and finished with a gorgeous double twist. Kristin Sterner (9.95) threw the most difficult routine of the competition, highlighted by a wolf to immediate back pike and a dismount of a double pike. Andree Pickens matched her routine with a flight series of flic flac, flic flac, layout, a punch front, split leap to wolf jump and a double tuck dismount. Bama's total on the beam was a 49.550 and the Tide won the night session with a 197.300, followed by UCLA at 197.100, Stanford at 196.050, Minnesota at 195.700, Florida at 195.675 and Oregon State at 192.925.
During the preliminary session, the Tide earned 13 first team All America honors: on the vault (Brion and Pickens), uneven bars (Barrington and Pickens), balance beam (Hrozek, Rice, Sterner, and Pickens), and the floor exercise (Sterner, Pickens, Brion), as well as the all around (Rice and Pickens).
