Vault
The Alabama Crimson Tide picked up a third and sixth place showing in the vault finals. Senior Andree Pickens vaulted a Yurchenko full and a Yurchenko 1.5 for a final score of 9.925. Freshman Alexis Brion vaulted a front pike with a 1/2 twist and a front with a 1/2 tuck for a final score of 9.8375. Two booming Yurchenko vaults were thrown by the winner, sophomore Jamie Dantzscher of UCLA, for a 9.9565 with sophomore Marline Stephens of UGA coming in a close second (9.9505).
Balance Beam
Alabama had a terrific showing on the balance beam during event finals, being the only team to earn four first team All America honors. Sophomore Jeana Rice finished second with a beautiful routine (9.912) to Michigan's sophomore Elise Ray (9.925), while Tide junior Kristen Sterner threw the most difficult routine of the evening for third place (9.90). Andree Pickens was the first gymnast up on this event and scored a 9.863 for fifth place while Bama freshman Shannon Hrozek came in ninth with a steady 9.80 performance.
Uneven Bars
Andree Pickens now has a national championship on the bars to go along with her beam title from her freshman year and the 2002 team championship. She scored a 9.925 for arguably the most difficult routine of the night (four major release moves and a full in dismount). Juniors Doni Thompson (9.913) and Onnie Willis (9.900) of UCLA finished second and third respectively, followed by Bama's senior Natalie Barrington (9.888).
Floor Exercise
Beautiful routines on the floor were thrown by UCLA's Jamie Dantzscher (9.95) and LSU senior Nicole Arnstad (9.95) in a tie for first place honors. Dantzscher opened with a double layout and Arnstad with a triple twist. Utah's Shannon Bowles finished in third (9.925) and the elegance and class of UGA senior Talya Vexler came out in a routine that she personally choreographed (9.913). She tied for fourth place with Alabama's Alexis Brion (9.913), who had her best floor performance of the three-day competition. Andree Pickens finished in sixth (9.90), being the first person up on this event as well. Kristin Sterner performed admirably for eleventh with a 9.863, tying Theresa Kulikowski of Utah.
