[Scores]
[PlayByPlay] [Postmeet]

[ top... ]
Well, this was a close one [ 8:25 PM, 01/18/03 ]

but Alabama comes away with a fine score under high pressure conditions. We are so proud of this very young team, going up against a mainly veteran UGA team and coming away with an incredible performance on the beam to push the Dawgs into a corner. Bama will hit the road again next Friday at Arkansas and then on Sunday at Nebraska so join us again on the website for all the action. Roll Tide Roll!

[ top... ]
The uneven bars is next [ 8:23 PM, 01/18/03 ]

with Kinsey Rowe winning it with a 9.95. Jeana Rice and Cory Fritzinger both score a 10 on beam and on floor Sierra Sapunar a 9.925 and Ashley Miles a 9.95.

[ top... ]
On vault [ 8:21 PM, 01/18/03 ]

Jeana Rice and Ashley Miles finish second with a 9.875 and Cory Fritzinger and Kinsey Rowe also. Chelsa Byrd gets a 9.95 for her vault score and finishes first.

[ top... ]
Stephanie Kite got a 9.80 for her exhibition beam. [ 8:20 PM, 01/18/03 ]

Georgia won by .025. UA 197.050 and UGA 197.075. Great score for the Tide.

[ top... ]
Jeana is through her wolf to two straddle [ 8:13 PM, 01/18/03 ]

leaps and her two layouts were perfect, as was her wolf full. This is looking awesome so far. And she nails the double full dismount!!! What a beam performance. She gets a 10.00 and Ackerman just fell on the floor as the Tiders up in the stands are cheering like banshees for Rice's performance on beam!! However, this is not going to be enough, as the Dawgs got just enough on the floor to pull this out by a whisker. Stephanie Kite just completed her exhibition routine and did very well! Jeana Rice finishes with a 10 on the beam and a 39.625 in the all around. Chelsa Byrd finishes in first 39.650. How about that?

[ top... ]
Bayer receives a 9.875 [ 8:11 PM, 01/18/03 ]

for her first collegiate competitive beam routine. Awesome! Byrd on floor popped forward and out of her opening pass of a full in. She also took a step forward out of her double pike (final pass). Jeana Rice is up next for the Tide on the beam.

[ top... ]
She is through her front aerial to immediate back handspring [ 8:09 PM, 01/18/03 ]

and the crowd is cheering her split scale to side of her head (straight upward). Nice leap series (switch leap to straddle to Korbut). She nails her pike dismount off the end of the beam and the partisan crowd applauds very politely. Nice job freshman!

[ top... ]
Sterner gets a 9.875 for her routine. [ 8:07 PM, 01/18/03 ]

Sapunar is up on the floor after bounding through her opening pass of a front through to a double full. Mari-Christine Bayer is up next on the balance beam. Such elegance, such perspicacity!

[ top... ]
Pierce gets a 9.925 for her beam [ 8:04 PM, 01/18/03 ]

routine. Kristin Sterner is up next. She is on with the punch front and is looking good so far. Perfect flight series of two back handsprings to a layout. Fritzinger gets a 9.90 for her floor routine. Here is the real tough part for Sterner but she nails it like the trooper she is, a wolf to immediate standing pike. She takes a giant step back on her double pike dismount but what a routine!!!

[ top... ]
Pierce is through her [ 8:02 PM, 01/18/03 ]

three leap series with magnificent amplitude and the flight series as well! Side switch leap looks very good. She is moving with lots of confidence and now dismounts with a round off to layout off the side. Fjordholm gets a 9.725 for her floor routine, which included an automatic one tenth deduction for the step out of bounds.

[ top... ]
Marie Fjordholm just [ 8:00 PM, 01/18/03 ]

stepped out on her opening pass of a double layout for the Dawgs. Reeser gets a 9.875 for her beam routine. Dana Pierce is next up for the Tide and hopefully will nail that flight series. Come on freshman!

[ top... ]
Shannon receives a 9.75 [ 7:57 PM, 01/18/03 ]

for her beam routine. Reeser is now up and Emmons gets a 9.875 on floor. Reeser connects all three flight elements and completes the punch front as well. Lots of confidence in her tonight. Two solid routines in the bag.

[ top... ]
Shannon Hrozek [ 7:53 PM, 01/18/03 ]

starts us off again and nails her flight series just beautifully! Her hitch kick to sheep jump was awesome to behold but her front walk over was slightly bent to the side to balance the landing. She just nailed her dismount. She will have to increase the difficulty of her dismount in the coming weeks to maximize her scoring. However, she got us started off very solidly.

[ top... ]
UA has a 147.500 and UGA [ 7:48 PM, 01/18/03 ]

is at 147.775, so Alabama has no choice but to stay on the beam to have any hope of a chance to win this. Of course, the UGA crowd will be screaming loud for their ladies and UA will have to remain very focused. Kind of like they were at Nationals. But remember we have three new faces in the line-up, so anything goes. A 196.00 or higher would be great to see two weeks in a row.

[ top... ]
Ashley Miles just threw [ 7:44 PM, 01/18/03 ]

a great routine, all three passes landed very well, including the double layout, front handspring, front full to a front layout and the double pike to end with. She gets a 9.95 for just being a tiny bit off her ending dance move with the music. Brittany Smith does an exhibition routine on the beam and falls. Lauren Holdefer just threw her exhibition routine, opening with a double front (low and possibly landed a bit out of bounds on the soft mat).

[ top... ]
Kinsey Rowe is now on the beam [ 7:43 PM, 01/18/03 ]

and almost fell on her full twisting Korbut but just kept from slipping off. Another bobble on her switch leap combination, so this should not score much more than a 9.80 to 9.85. She nailed the double twist dismount and gets a 9.825. Sterner gets a 9.85 for her floor routine. Ashley Miles is next.

[ top... ]
Cassie Bair gets a 9.725 for her beam [ 7:41 PM, 01/18/03 ]

and Kristin Sterner is looking awesome so far through her first two passes and she finishes with a double pike and takes one step forward to check her landing. Nice routine!

[ top... ]
Jeana Rice is looking great so far with [ 7:38 PM, 01/18/03 ]

her two passes of a double pike and a whip to 2 1/2 twist. She finishes strongly with a whip to a double full so maybe she will at least get a 9.85. Ah!! They were generous and gave her a 9.875.

[ top... ]
Cory Fritzinger gets a 10 on the beam [ 7:37 PM, 01/18/03 ]

for UGA. This helps her a lot after the disaster on the bars.

[ top... ]
Mari-Christine Bayer gets [ 7:33 PM, 01/18/03 ]

the loudest applause yet from the UGA crowd for one of Bama's routines and she sold it beautifully. Byrd got a 9.925 despite taking a step on her dismount and struggling on that flight series a bit. Bayer gets a 9.80 despite the routine being scored from a 10.0 by both judges.

[ top... ]
Another 9.875 for UGA and [ 7:29 PM, 01/18/03 ]

Reeser popped out a bit on her opening pass of a double pike. Bama is not taking advantage of their strengths here and Reeser almost missed the timing of her last move, though she completed her second and third passes just fine. She receives a 9.825 for this routine. Chelsa Byrd is doing fine on her beam routine and finishes up with a double tuck dismount with one step. She also struggled a bit on the landing of her flight series but otherwise had a solid routine.

[ top... ]
Emmons gets a 9.875 on the balance beam [ 7:27 PM, 01/18/03 ]

for the Dawgs and Stephanie finishes an awesome routine on floor for the Tide for a 9.775. Sapunar has completed her routine with no major problems so it will also score high.

[ top... ]
Emmons is looking very strong [ 7:23 PM, 01/18/03 ]

on the balance beam, throwing two solid layouts and a punch front with super confidence. She dismounts with a 1 1/2. Stephanie is up next fo rthe Tide on floor. She opens with the front through to a double full, nailing the landing.

[ top... ]
Alabama will now move to the [ 7:18 PM, 01/18/03 ]

floor exercise and hopefully will shake and shine to get those scores at maximum level. UGA will attack the beam no doubt to try and secure a victory because they know their floor routines have the home crowd behind them to get the top scores.

[ top... ]
Kinsey Rowe just completed a nice [ 7:12 PM, 01/18/03 ]

routine, no major release move but nice reverse giants. Jeana Rice just threw a Yurchenko 1/1 but hopped back and receives a 9.875 while Rowe got a 9.95. Ashley Miles threw a nice vault but popped just a bit forward at the chest and will be deducted for this. Awesome height however! She gets a 9.875 and the Tide finishes with a 49.175 on vault. However, Cory Fritzinger just fell on her bars routine and they will have to count a fall. Dana Pierce exhibited on the vault and gets a 9.675 for a Yurchenko layout. Cory gets a 9.30 for her bars routine but the Dawgs still lead by .075. UGA finishes on bars with a 48.900. Bama is at 98.200 and UGA is at 98.275.

[ top... ]
Stephanie Kite just [ 7:11 PM, 01/18/03 ]

threw a solid vault as well, the front pike with a 1/2 twist, landing it a little bent forward but not taking a step. She gets a 9.775 for form deductions most likely.

[ top... ]
Sterner just threw her first competitive [ 7:09 PM, 01/18/03 ]

Yurchenko vault in competition and stood it up like a trooper! Sullivan gets a 9.85 for her bars routine. Sterner gets a 9.85!!! Ackerman had a little trouble with her routine on bars and did not reach most of her handstands either, but pikes down the double layout and lands it ok.

[ top... ]
Cassie Bair drug her legs as she [ 7:06 PM, 01/18/03 ]

released to the low bar and almost ended up on her knees on her dismount, so this will score fairly low. Hrozek gets a 9.725 for her vault and Mari-Christine throws the Yurchenko 1/1, with a tiny step back and her own electric smile! Bair gets a 9.35 for her bars routine and Keri Lee Sullivan is up next. A nice routine and the crowd roars their approval. Bayer gets a 9.80 for her vault.

[ top... ]
Shannon Hrozek starts us off on the vault [ 7:00 PM, 01/18/03 ]

and waits for the signal from Kathy Feldman, head judge on this event. Now she gets the green flag and Hrozek pounds forward with a mighty front pike, one step forward to stop her momentum. Cassie Bair is up on the bars for the Dawgs.

[ top... ]
Alabama moves to the vault [ 6:59 PM, 01/18/03 ]

while UGA goes to the uneven bars.

[ top... ]
Dana Filetti gets a 9.825 for her exhibition [ 6:58 PM, 01/18/03 ]

routine. She threw all three release moves and nailed her dismount of a double front out of a 1 1/2 turn. Very excited gal!

[ top... ]
Kristin Sterner did it again, [ 6:54 PM, 01/18/03 ]

clipping both times on the releases and the crowd went "whhoooo" so the judges know it happened for sure. She gets a 9.65 and Jeana Rice follows with a beautiful routine, slightly bending her knees on the full in dismount for a 9.875. Total of 49.025 for UA and 49.375 for UGA on vault. It doesn't get any easier Bama so let's tighten up that form and those landings.

[ top... ]
Dana Pierce gets a 9.85 [ 6:51 PM, 01/18/03 ]

and Ashley Miles just threw a stupendous follow up routine, making the dangerous Shaposhnikova and reaching all of her handstands, taking one step forward on her dismount of the double front for a 9.80. The cowboying of the double front is no doubt costing her a higher score as well.

[ top... ]
Reeser gets a 8.975 [ 6:50 PM, 01/18/03 ]

but Dana Pierce comes through in a big way, throwing her inverts and reaching all but one of her handstands and nailing her dismount! She turns to the judges with an electric smile!

[ top... ]
Kinsey Rowe [ 6:49 PM, 01/18/03 ]

completes her Yurchenko 1/1 with a tiny step back and the crowd roars. Rowe gets a 9.875.

[ top... ]
Michelle Reeser fell on her Tkatchev [ 6:48 PM, 01/18/03 ]

release but finishes her routine well. Emmons gets a 9.85 for her vault.

[ top... ]
Miller gets a 9.775 for her vault [ 6:47 PM, 01/18/03 ]

and Hrozek gets a 9.85 for her uneven bars routine. Emmons throws a Yurchenko 1/1 as well and goes in a bit flat but lands it okay.

[ top... ]
UGA goes up first on the vault [ 6:43 PM, 01/18/03 ]

with freshman Ashley Miller, who throws a Yurchenko 1/1. She throws it with no major problems, one step to the side, not much distance. Shannon Hrozek is on the bars for the Tide. Beautiful Geinger release, nice toe point and extension and a perfect landing of the double tuck dismount. She missed getting completely vertical on her last handstand but otherwise this was a very solid routine.

[ top... ]
The UGA cheerleaders are [ 6:42 PM, 01/18/03 ]

holding aluminum foil as they cheer on the crowd. Ah, the 21st Century has truly accomplished great and wonderful things.

[ top... ]
Coach Patterson is in electric blue tonight [ 6:40 PM, 01/18/03 ]

while Suzanne Yoculan is in a black dress with her signature spiked heels.

[ top... ]
Now they are asking Suzanne Yoculan [ 6:38 PM, 01/18/03 ]

about Marlene Stephens' recovery from her achilles injury and she reports that she is ahead of recovery schedule and has been rotating bars but this is a tough injury to recover from. No impact usually for 9-12 months, so she has a ways to go.

[ top... ]
So, let's get this meet going Tide Fans! [ 6:34 PM, 01/18/03 ]

The ashes are floating around from the fireworks as we sing the national anthem. Now the lights come up and we are ready to do the 3:30 minute touch. Alabama is dressed in deep cranberry velveteen with silver trim on the bodice. This looks good on all the ladies. UGA is dressed in solid red with some silver sequins cris-crossing the bodice.

[ top... ]
UGA is finally being introduced [ 6:33 PM, 01/18/03 ]

to "I've been working on the railroad", that glorious song that is shared by numerous universities as their fight song. But combine it with UGA VI and you've got...well, a dog with his own song.

[ top... ]
UGA VI is now being introduced [ 6:31 PM, 01/18/03 ]

and he gets a louder applause than Suzanne's opening promo. Sorry about UGA IV reference last week but he's been long gone apparently.

[ top... ]
Alabama is now being introduced and they [ 6:20 PM, 01/18/03 ]

only receive a smattering of boos and lots of applause in general. We can hear the Tide fans yelling "Roll Tide Roll!" The 20th year signs are back up for Coach Yoculan as their tykes go in front with lights flickering. It's going quicker this week so we will hopefully start the meet on time.

[ top... ]
The judges tonight are... [ 6:17 PM, 01/18/03 ]

Kathy Feldman and Joy Schmidt on vault, Pat Etheredge and Mark Welch on uneven bars, Joy and Pat on balance beam and Kathy and Mark on the floor exercise. Pat Etheredge is the only Brevet judge on board tonight, the rest are National judges.

[ top... ]
The all around tonight will be between [ 6:14 PM, 01/18/03 ]

UGA's Cory Fritzinger, Chelsa Byrd and UA's Jeana Rice and Kristin Sterner. Odds on favorites: Chelsa Byrd and Jeana Rice since Kristin is throwing a brand new vault tonight and Fritzinger has struggled lately on beam and floor.

[ top... ]
The crowd is still trickling in [ 6:13 PM, 01/18/03 ]

and there is a UGA majorette entertaining the crowd on the floor mat, now throwing three batons. Add one more and she is receiving a loud applause.

[ top... ]
The Tide is now hearing from Coach Patterson [ 6:10 PM, 01/18/03 ]

about the line-up decision on the beam. A few words of encouragement and they are ready to go to the dressing room to get ready for this fight, uh, we mean MEET!

[ top... ]
Dana Pierce is changing [ 6:06 PM, 01/18/03 ]

the flight series element to a layout to build up that confidence again and it has so far worked.

[ top... ]
Dana Pierce is [ 6:04 PM, 01/18/03 ]

experiencing problems again with her two-footed back handspring to two-footed layout (flight series). She is looking a bit frustrated and Coach Patterson starts working on this immediately. Jeana Rice is looking very confident, going for the stuck landing on the double twist. Sterner is also looking good, again throwing the punch front mount and the double pike, standing up both well in warm-ups.

[ top... ]
A special prayer is sent out to former Bama gymnast [ 5:59 PM, 01/18/03 ]

Traci Tillman-Adams and her husband, whose son is undergoing surgery. We're all praying for a successful surgery and complete recovery. Roll Tide!

[ top... ]
On the uneven bars [ 5:58 PM, 01/18/03 ]

Hrozek, Reeser, Pierce, Miles, Sterner and Rice will go while on balance beam we will see Hrozek, Reeser, Pierce, Sterner, Bayer and Rice. The floor has Kite, Reeser, Bayer, Rice, Sterner, and Miles going.

[ top... ]
On vault Bama [ 5:57 PM, 01/18/03 ]

will start Hrozek, followed by Bayer, Sterner, Kite, Rice, and Miles.

[ top... ]
Bama is going with the same line-up on floor [ 5:55 PM, 01/18/03 ]

and uneven bars from last week but will move Kristin Sterner into the vault line-up in place of Lauren Holdefer while Mari-Christine Bayer will take Stephanie Kite's place on balance beam this week.

[ top... ]
Georgia is not as crisp on beam as they were [ 5:52 PM, 01/18/03 ]

last week in long warm-ups but there are more ladies working the apparatus and perhaps there is more of a feeling of competition for the starting six spots. Chelsa Byrd, Cory Fritzinger and Sierra Sapunar will most likely be in the line-up. Brittany Smith just tried her full twisting tuck but fell on it. Suzanne is giving her a pep talk as they walk to the floor.

[ top... ]
The music is a bit piercing tonight [ 5:45 PM, 01/18/03 ]

but Bama is really liking it! Lauren Holdefer is throwing the double front on floor and so far it is looking solid. Bama is not going to show much tonight in terms of difficulty on the floor with the exception of Ashley Miles, Kristin Sterner, Jeana Rice and perhaps Lauren Holdefer. The goal is to build endurance and skills towards the championship season and have everyone as healthy as possible.

[ top... ]
Emmons will not be throwing a [ 5:44 PM, 01/18/03 ]

punch front mount on beam but has one near the beginning of her routine.

[ top... ]
Alexis Brion and Lauren Pruitt [ 5:42 PM, 01/18/03 ]

did not travel again with the team this week. Pruitt is a walk on from Decatur and is mainly working vault this season while Brion is still recovering from ankle surgery in the off-season. Stephanie Kite just showed very nice form and toe-point on her final pass on floor followed by a nice double layout by Ashley Miles.

[ top... ]
Georgia is warming up [ 5:39 PM, 01/18/03 ]

several of their freshmen on bars and balance beam for either spots in the line-up or perhaps exhibitions. We did not see Brittany Smith last week at the Super Six but likely will tonight on the beam.

[ top... ]
Hrozek has the front pike [ 5:36 PM, 01/18/03 ]

down and just needs a little more distance to get a 9.90. Stephanie Kite is going to twist her vault tonight and it looks like Lauren Holdefer will go with the front pike again. Mari-Christine Bayer just twisted her Yurchenko 1/1 and Kristin Sterner the Yurchenko half off front full layout, followed by another front pike from Hrozek to end this warm-up.

[ top... ]
Holdefer's vault [ 5:34 PM, 01/18/03 ]

is in the laid-out position, so you have to get great push off the vaulting table, legs need to be tightly together and then you have to twist your body to land forward. She is standing them up but looks scary going in.

[ top... ]
Holdefer [ 5:29 PM, 01/18/03 ]

just threw the half on half off front, which is a scary-looking vault. Coach Patterson was a little concerned but happy to see Kristin throw the half off front full layout and landing it straight up!

[ top... ]
Bama picks up their energy a [ 5:24 PM, 01/18/03 ]

bit on the vaulting runs. Kristin Sterner is doing vaulting runs, along with Pierce, Holdefer, Rice, Bayer, Miles, Kite and Hrozek.

[ top... ]
The Tide fans are here [ 5:18 PM, 01/18/03 ]

and cheering the ladies on after they just completed their bars warm-up. Bama moves to the vault. Bruce and Carmela Tomasek are here with Raegan along with RaraRuss and Susan, Salto, Salsa and Saltine, the Holdefers, and Brenda!

[ top... ]
Filetti is a bit off on her Geinger release [ 5:15 PM, 01/18/03 ]

but Rice comes back strong on her next practice run, showing excellent toe point and extension. Ashley does not appear to be spotting the floor on her double front dismount and hence takes a bounding step forward.

[ top... ]
Shannon Hrozek [ 5:12 PM, 01/18/03 ]

knows how to reach those handstands! Perfect toe-point and pirouetting on top of the bars to a stuck double tuck dismount out of a full pirouette. Filetti and Rice struggled a bit with their release and inverts respectively while Miles is still trying to throw that Shaposhnikova with tighter leg form.

[ top... ]
Rachael Delahoussaye [ 5:09 PM, 01/18/03 ]

is looking great on the beam and may exhibit tonight while Larissa Stewart just completed a very nice double layout dismount from the uneven bars. Dana Pierce is showing good form throughout her giants but is still missing the handstands more than 10 degrees here and there. Nice landing of the double front dismount by Kristin Sterner!

[ top... ]
Hello for the second week in a row from [ 5:07 PM, 01/18/03 ]

Athens, GA. We are watching opening stretches on the bars, vault and beam and the teams are getting ready to do their official meet warm-ups. Mari-Christine Bayer and Rachael Delahoussaye are practicing on the beam in front of Dana Dobransky and Coach Patterson while the rest of our team is on the uneven bars.
