[PlayByPlay] [Postmeet]

[ top... ]
Well, the meet is over and [ 3:59 PM, 01/26/03 ]

Coach Patterson goes over to talk to the Spidles. We will hopefully see all of you and many more at the first home meet against Michigan, January 31, at 7 pm. Let's get as many people there as possible to show our support for this great team. Roll Tide! Beam us home Scotty!

[ top... ]
AJ Lamb is being lauded by Mr. Nebraska, [ 3:58 PM, 01/26/03 ]

our new P.A. friend. The crowd goes wild, all 1,062 of them. Woohoo!

[ top... ]
AJ Lamb has a school all around record total in this arena [ 3:54 PM, 01/26/03 ]

and for herself and the Nebraska team apparently (39.750). Ashley Miles finished in third place. Sterner finishes third in the all around, tied with Tiffany Byrd. Richelle Simpson finishes second and AJ Lamb first.

[ top... ]
Coach Patterson has just given us some great news! [ 3:50 PM, 01/26/03 ]

Jeana Rice is walking and apparently suffered only a slight sprain. She is doing fine and is now walking out on the floor to get her bars top score award. She is wearing a bandage attached to an ankle brace but is not showing any difficulty walking. Salto, you can now sit up and put those smelling salts aside!

[ top... ]
Bama finishes on the balance beam with a team score of [ 3:49 PM, 01/26/03 ]

49.425, going six for six (seven if you count Ms. Delahoussaye).

[ top... ]
Rachael Delahoussaye just completed her [ 3:45 PM, 01/26/03 ]

exhibition beam routine and looked terrific! She upgraded her dismount by throwing a pike full off the end of the beam. We could not get her score. Bama finishes with a remarkable 197.175 despite losing Jeana Rice on the floor and beam events. Great composure and grit shown by our ladies. Nebraska finishes with a 197.475.

[ top... ]
Hrozek gets a 9.90 and Tiffany Byrd [ 3:33 PM, 01/26/03 ]

a 9.875. Sterner just completed her beam routine while the crowd was screaming for AJ Lamb's 9.975. Sterner gets a 9.875. She had some small balance checks on her punch front mount and the double pike dismount. She finishes with a 39.250 in the all around (9.70 for the vault).

[ top... ]
Byrd finishes with a double tuck for her floor routine [ 3:31 PM, 01/26/03 ]

and Hrozek is now on the beam for the Tide. Great flight series and a neat gym-acro series as well. She is through the hitch kick to sheep jump and is now dismounting with a double twist. She lands it with no steps! Yahoo! That's our All American!

[ top... ]
Byrd of Nebraska is through her opening [ 3:30 PM, 01/26/03 ]

pass of a double pike and a double twist on her second (hopped backwards on the landing). Bayer gets a 9.90 for her beam routine.

[ top... ]
Harris gets a 9.90 on the floor [ 3:29 PM, 01/26/03 ]

and Bayer is through her flight series and her leg scale (up next to her ear; also, the front walkover to another leg scale is done very nicely. Leap series is through, nice extension on that straddle and the ring leap, landing of the dismount of a pike off the end of the beam. She is engulfed by her team!

[ top... ]
Mari-Christine Bayer is up next on the beam [ 3:28 PM, 01/26/03 ]

for the Tide. Tami Harris is finishing her floor routine, where she throws a double pike and finishes with a double tuck.

[ top... ]
Landgraf gets a 9.825 for her routine on floor. [ 3:27 PM, 01/26/03 ]

Kite gets a 9.725 for her beam routine. Great job from Kite, who had to step in for Jeana Rice.

[ top... ]
Stephanie Kite is next on beam for the Tide [ 3:24 PM, 01/26/03 ]

and mounts with a punch front. She takes several bounding steps but stays on. She lands the back handspring to two-footed layout and the switch leap, wolf and straddle 3/4, followed by the front walk-over. Good composure following the shaky start. She lands the wolf full well and dismounts with a Rudi, nicely done.

[ top... ]
Houk of Nebraska got a 9.775 for her routine [ 3:24 PM, 01/26/03 ]

on floor.

[ top... ]
Pierce gets a 9.875 [ 3:23 PM, 01/26/03 ]

for her beam routine. Landgraf throws a triple twist on her first pass.

[ top... ]
Hey, this is Shannon Hrozek's music on the beam [ 3:21 PM, 01/26/03 ]

from Puddle of Mud! But Dana is taking it over. Bend at the waist on the third element of her leap series (straddle) but she nails the flight series and the switch leap combination and the dismount of a round off to layout. Happy gal!

[ top... ]
Reeser gets a 9.875 to start us off in grand fashion! [ 3:21 PM, 01/26/03 ]

Next up is Dana Pierce, freshman from Advance, Indiana, with population of 500 and some cats and dogs.

[ top... ]
What confidence, what nerve! [ 3:19 PM, 01/26/03 ]

This Alabama team is growing up very quickly right before our eyes. Reeser just completed her routine with no major problems and nailed the dismount of a back handspring to layout. Julie Houk just did a 2 1/2 twist on her opening pass but had to take three steps forward to stop her momentum from taking her out of bounds.

[ top... ]
The official attendance is 1,062. [ 3:17 PM, 01/26/03 ]

Salto, do you think we can match this or should we add another "0" to the total? 10,062 sounds great or more. Michelle Reeser is now through her flight series on the balance beam and is looking good so far.

[ top... ]
The beam line-up is changing for the Tide due to [ 3:14 PM, 01/26/03 ]

Jeana Rice rolling her ankle on the floor after her dance leap series (this followed her completed second pass on the floor; she was looking great up to this point). Michelle Reeser, Dana Pierce, Stephanie Kite, Mari-Christine Bayer, Shannon Hrozek and then Kristin Sterner.

[ top... ]
Well, Miss Cleo I'm not because Ashley just scored [ 3:08 PM, 01/26/03 ]

a 9.925. Bama finishes floor with a 49.325 and a running score of 147.75. Nebraska finished the beam with the exact score of the Tide on floor, 49.325. They remain .225 ahead of the Tide at 147.975.

[ top... ]
Byrd gets a 9.800 [ 3:06 PM, 01/26/03 ]

and A.R.M. is just nailing her second pass (front, front full, front layout) and is now begging the crowd to dance along with her. The final pass of a double pike is.......landed perfectly but her final salute to the sky is just slightly off the music, so....9.85???

[ top... ]
Byrd dismounts with a double tuck [ 3:06 PM, 01/26/03 ]

and takes a big step on her landing towards the beam. Whooh, that was close. Ashley just nailed her double layout with a big smile and is now boogeying big time!

[ top... ]
Kite is going to just throw the [ 3:02 PM, 01/26/03 ]

double full out of a front and lands it well. She is dancing and then completes the second pass with excellent landing, as well as her final pass. The crowd is applausing politely and the Bama Nation is cheering loudly. Byrd is now finishing for the Huskers on beam. Kite gets a 9.85. Now, let's see. If I were Miss Cleo, I might predict that Ashley Miles would get no higher than a 9.85. Let's see if I can emulate her.

[ top... ]
Jen French of Nebraska gets a 9.80 on the beam [ 3:01 PM, 01/26/03 ]

while Sterner gets a 9.85. Ahem. Now, we will see Stephanie Kite go.

[ top... ]
Bayer gets a 9.85 for her floor routine and [ 2:57 PM, 01/26/03 ]

Reeser a 9.85 as well. Word up from Coach Patterson is that Jeana Rice rolled her ankle. That's a painful thing to have happen but not season-ending. We will give updates as we hear them. Sterner is doing a fantastic job on the floor, smiling all the way through her routine. She will finish with another double pike and lands it well and then throws a full twisting Shushunova before her final dance move. Wow! You go girl!

[ top... ]
Michelle finishes her routine with a [ 2:56 PM, 01/26/03 ]

front, front full, barani to layout-stepout. She salutes the judges with a big grin.

[ top... ]
Harris of Nebraska gets a 9.85 for her beam [ 2:56 PM, 01/26/03 ]

routine.

[ top... ]
Saas of Nebraska gets a 9.875 [ 2:54 PM, 01/26/03 ]

for her beam routine and we are waiting on Bayer's score. Reeser is through her opening pass of a double pike.

[ top... ]
Bayer is through her [ 2:53 PM, 01/26/03 ]

final pass and finishes beautifully. The ladies engulf her with joy.

[ top... ]
Bama is trying to remain upbeat and Coach Patterson is [ 2:51 PM, 01/26/03 ]

chatting with Mari-Christine Bayer to pump her up. The ladies have to press on in Jeana's absence. Mari is through her first pass with a huge smile, as well as her second one.

[ top... ]
AJ Lamb scores a 9.90 [ 2:51 PM, 01/26/03 ]

on her beam routine.

[ top... ]
Lamb dismounts with a gainer layout and [ 2:48 PM, 01/26/03 ]

now Jeana throws her pike with panache! Her whip to a 2 1/2 twist is landed very well and she is now dancing and leaping. However, Rice just twisted something on her leap and is not finishing the routine, so they are taking her off the floor to check on this. We will inform you as soon as we know something.

[ top... ]
AJ Lamb is on the beam with a punch front [ 2:46 PM, 01/26/03 ]

mount and some nice leaps. She is in a zone today!

[ top... ]
First up on floor is Jeana Rice [ 2:43 PM, 01/26/03 ]

and for the Huskers is AJ Lamb on the beam.

[ top... ]
Bama is behind by .225 [ 2:42 PM, 01/26/03 ]

and can make up some ground big-time on the floor if they stand up their routines and land in bounds (Ms. Kite and Ms. Miles with their booming opening passes).

[ top... ]
Landgraf gets a 9.825 for her exhibition routine on the bars. [ 2:39 PM, 01/26/03 ]

Bama moves to the floor and the Huskers to the balance beam. Jeana Rice and AJ Lamb are tied for the all around at 19.875 at this point. Bama is at 98.425 and Nebraska is at 98.650.

[ top... ]
Houk finishes in fine fashion for the Huskers [ 2:37 PM, 01/26/03 ]

and nails her landing. She missed one handstand and is deducted accordingly for a final score of 9.90. Their final score on bars is 49.125, so they did not lose much ground. Libby Landgraf just exhibited with a solid routine.

[ top... ]
Jess Wertz gets a 9.05 for the Huskers [ 2:36 PM, 01/26/03 ]

and Tami Harris threw her full twisting layout but takes a step back on the landing for a 9.90.

[ top... ]
Ashley Miles just threw a stupendous Yurchenko 1/1 [ 2:34 PM, 01/26/03 ]

for a 9.925. Bama has a 49.200 total on this event. Pierce just exhibited the Yurchenko layout for a 9.500.

[ top... ]
She lands her vault but is bent forward on the [ 2:32 PM, 01/26/03 ]

landing and receives deductions accordingly (9.725). Simpson gets a 9.600 for the cornhuskers and Jess Wertz just fell on her release move, so they will have to count the 9.600.

[ top... ]
Stephanie Kite is up next for the [ 2:32 PM, 01/26/03 ]

Tide. Rice gets a 9.95 for her vault.

[ top... ]
Sterner bounds forward on her vault and will be [ 2:30 PM, 01/26/03 ]

deducted accordingly. The form again was just beautiful but she must land it to get the higher score. She had three tenths taken off just for the bound forward, so she will have to work on controlling it more and spotting the ground better. Rice responds with a perfect Yurchenko 1/1 but the judges don't reward her with a 10. Wrong shade of red? Just kidding!

[ top... ]
Mari-Christine Bayer [ 2:29 PM, 01/26/03 ]

throws the Yurchenko 1/1 and takes one step back on the landing for a 9.825.

[ top... ]
The three minute warm up is over and [ 2:21 PM, 01/26/03 ]

we now start off with Shannon Hrozek, who throws a front pike, one step to check her landing. She gets a 9.775. Tiffany Byrd completes her bars routine, sans the Hindorff but she does throw the double layout. She gets a 9.85.

[ top... ]
Bama is behind by three tenths and will have to [ 2:21 PM, 01/26/03 ]

nail their vaults to keep Nebraska from running away with this meet.

[ top... ]
Nebraska ends up on the vault with a [ 2:19 PM, 01/26/03 ]

49.525. Amazing, isn't it? When you're hot you're hot. Reeser just did an exhibition on the bars for the Tide and completed it well. Alabama has a running total of 49.225 on the uneven bars, which is their best score on this event for the year. The Tide is still adding new routines and steadily building their difficulty, so the higher scores are hopefully down the road. Filetti's routine was nicely done, reaching all handstands and getting excellent distance from the high bar on her double front dismount, which is thrown by her out of a 1 1/2 pirouette.

[ top... ]
Filetti is doing well on the bars [ 2:15 PM, 01/26/03 ]

but Richelle Simpson is doing better, throwing a perfect Yurchenko vault for another 10.0. Ashley Miles gets a 9.85 for her bars routine and Filetti a 9.775. Rice gets a 9.925 for her bars routine.

[ top... ]
Ashley Miles is through her routine [ 2:14 PM, 01/26/03 ]

and lands the double front with just one step to balance. Nice routine! Nebraska is vaulting the lights out today!

[ top... ]
The meet is going at the same time. [ 2:11 PM, 01/26/03 ]

Well, Hrozek gets a 9.775 for her bar routine and Dana Pierce just completed hers for a 9.85. Byrd got a 9.800 for her vault and Sterner-meister just completed her bars routine, nailing the double front dismount! She clipped her right ankle on the second release, a Tkatchev. She gets a 9.825.

[ top... ]
Shannon Hrozek just followed up with a perfect [ 2:10 PM, 01/26/03 ]

bars routine of her own! She nailed the second handstand that's been giving her trouble. AJ Lamb gets a perfect 10 for her vault, well deserved since it truly had perfect form and landing. Can't ask for anything more.

[ top... ]
Up on vault for the cornhuskers is AJ Lamb [ 2:09 PM, 01/26/03 ]

who vaults a pike 1/2 twist. She lands it perfectly.

[ top... ]
Well, Coach Patterson has not changed [ 2:07 PM, 01/26/03 ]

the bars line-up but did switch us up a bit on the vault. Shannon Hrozek will start the vault today, followed by Mari Bayer, Kristin Sterner, Jeana Rice, Stephanie Kite and Ashley Miles.

[ top... ]
And now, for the fashion report. [ 2:03 PM, 01/26/03 ]

Nebraska is dressed in red with contrasting black sleeves and shoulders. Bama is in their burgundy colored leo with a contrasting velveteen cropped bodice. Dan Kendig is sporting gray slacks with a solid black short-sleeved knit shirt. Debonair extraordinaire!

[ top... ]
Coach Patterson is dressed in a spiffy wool suit in an oatmeal [ 2:00 PM, 01/26/03 ]

shade, contrasted by a black turtleneck sweater. The national anthem has now been played and the ladies report to their first event.

[ top... ]
The crowd is now getting into it, clapping for the home [ 1:59 PM, 01/26/03 ]

team as they run in. Coach Patterson is making changes in the line-up next to us so we will give you the adjustments as soon as we can.

[ top... ]
It's time for Super Meet! [ 1:55 PM, 01/26/03 ]

They are showing our official University of Alabama fierce elephant logo on the jumbotron as they play "Let's Get Ready to Rumble!!!" The fifith ranked Tide versus the fourth-ranked Huskers. Bama is introduced first as the visiting team and now the Huskers come out. Not much fanfare but they are showing videos of meets and practices on the jumbotron and then the ladies' and their names before announcing the team.

[ top... ]
On the balance beam the Crimson Tide will [ 1:54 PM, 01/26/03 ]

finish the meet with Michelle Reeser, Dana Pierce, Kristin Sterner, Shannon Hrozek, Mari-Christine Bayer and Jeana Rice.

[ top... ]
On the floor exercise Bama will put [ 1:54 PM, 01/26/03 ]

Jeana Rice up first, then Mari-Christine Bayer, Michelle Reeser, Kristin Sterner, Stephanie Kite and Ashley Miles.

[ top... ]
On the uneven bars the Tide will mix the line-up a little bit more [ 1:52 PM, 01/26/03 ]

today, starting with Shannon Hrozek, Dana Pierce, Kristin Sterner, Ashley Miles, Dana Filetti, and Jeana Rice. On the vault we will see Lauren Holdefer, Mari-Christine Bayer, Kristin Sterner, Jeana Rice, Stephanie Kite, and Ashley Miles.

[ top... ]
We will have the official attendance around the third [ 1:50 PM, 01/26/03 ]

rotation thanks to Mr. Nebraska (our new friend).

[ top... ]
We are about ready to start this meet Crimson Tide Fans!!! [ 1:41 PM, 01/26/03 ]

Mr. P.A. is sitting right next to yours truly and is a great guy. The Nebraska people have been very welcoming to us and are amazed at all the Crimson Tide support that follows them, including the fans in the stands, PBAs and the sports information gang. He should come to a meet in T-Town and see what a huge gymnastics crowd looks and sounds like, eh Salto?

[ top... ]
Whoooh, that double pike dismount from Sterner was [ 1:40 PM, 01/26/03 ]

a little close to the end of the beam but she stands it up well. Hrozek is going to throw the double twist dismount today. Time is now up and the ladies exit to warm up.

[ top... ]
Shannon Hrozek is [ 1:39 PM, 01/26/03 ]

throwing a hitch kick to immediate sheep jump and Stephanie a wolf full.

[ top... ]
Mari-Christine Bayer is looking very well [ 1:36 PM, 01/26/03 ]

on the beam until she goes for the switch leap combination. Sterner has that look as she throws that front punch mount with an exclamation point. She is the leader of this team and must set the tone for the rest of the gals. Fortunately, Sterner is comfortable in this position. All gals that are following her are throwing more confident warm-up routines. Rice is striving for another 9.90 plus score today.

[ top... ]
Coach Patterson has pulled the team together before the [ 1:34 PM, 01/26/03 ]

final 6 minutes of warm-up commence to give them some extra pumping up. Stephanie Kite is now warming up and throws her flight series and leap series with no major problems.

[ top... ]
Sterner-meister is attacking the beam with [ 1:29 PM, 01/26/03 ]

encouragement from Coach Patterson. Tiny Michelle Reeser is starting to get comfortable in her new position (first up on beam).

[ top... ]
The Spidles are here for the meet (Gwen Spidle's parents) [ 1:26 PM, 01/26/03 ]

and are sitting with the Tide fans across the way. On the beam, Jeana Rice, Kristin Sterner are warming up their leaps and flight series to get a feel for the new apparatus. Dana Pierce is testing it now.

[ top... ]
Dana Filetti and Tami Harris are chatting for a few minutes [ 1:25 PM, 01/26/03 ]

before the final warm-ups are called. They are both from Chesapeake, Virginia.

[ top... ]
Stephanie Kite just nailed her mega difficult [ 1:19 PM, 01/26/03 ]

opening pass! Yowza! Let's see that in the competition and you've got that higher score potential. Bama now moves to the balance beam where they must be tenacious today to finish off a great road trip.

[ top... ]
Jeana Rice just nailed her double pike [ 1:14 PM, 01/26/03 ]

in front of us, followed by Kristin Sterner's. Perfect double layout from Ashley Miles as well. Stephanie is going again for that new first pass, a front through to a double full to a punch front. On this try she just stepped over the line and David is giving her feedback on how to adjust.

[ top... ]
The Tide is now moving to the floor [ 1:11 PM, 01/26/03 ]

while Nebraska goes to the balance beam. The line-up is looking interesting on floor. The Tide will start with Jeana Rice, Mari-Christine Bayer, Michelle Reeser, Kristin Sterner, Stephanie Kite, and end with super-turbo charger, Ashley Miles.

[ top... ]
Bama will be thrilled to finally come home to be [ 1:09 PM, 01/26/03 ]

greeted by their fans for a meet. This will take place Friday night, January 31 at 7 pm in Coleman Coliseum. We need a huge turnout to welcome the ladies home and this will be the debut of our freshmen before the home crowd. Let's bring grandma and grandpa and have a hoedown for this all-important meet against Michigan.

[ top... ]
Stephanie Kite has a bunch of turbo power [ 1:06 PM, 01/26/03 ]

on that front with a 1/2 twist vault. Nebraska is looking good on the bars and T-Byrd is throwing a Hindorff and a double layout dismount to beef up her difficulty against her former team. We like her attitude and competitive spirit.

[ top... ]
Kristin Sterner's form on her half off front full layout vault [ 1:02 PM, 01/26/03 ]

is gorgeous and Jeana Rice just followed with her Yurchenko 1/1, which had toes pointed as well.

[ top... ]
On vault we are seeing [ 1:01 PM, 01/26/03 ]

Jeana Rice, Ashley Miles, Dana Pierce, Shannon Hrozek, Stephanie Kite, Kristin Sterner and Mari-Christine Bayer warm up.

[ top... ]
Tami Harris of Nebraska [ 1:00 PM, 01/26/03 ]

is throwing an awesome looking new dismount a layout with a full twist. She continues to increase her difficulty each year.

[ top... ]
We have a change in the "nicknames" [ 12:56 AM, 01/26/03 ]

of some of our ladies. RaraRuss has informed us that Mari-Christine Bayer's nickname is not slugabug as we incorrectly called out the other night but sluggerbear, in honor of her almost decking Dana Pierce by accident during a fall workout. Dana Pierce is affectionately referred to as "Dr. Pepper" by the Tide crowd here and Ashley Miles as "A.R.M." for her upper arm strength and her initials. RaraRuss knows how to keep us laughing.

[ top... ]
The coaches are trying to decide on the final line-up for [ 12:53 AM, 01/26/03 ]

the uneven bars after completing the long warm-up. The Tide now moves to the vault.

[ top... ]
One more time on the uneven bars [ 12:51 AM, 01/26/03 ]

for Larissa Stewart. A very nice double layout dismount from her.

[ top... ]
Ashley Miles is striving for perfection [ 12:48 AM, 01/26/03 ]

on that double front dismount and nailing it just about every time now. Dana Pierce is struggling a bit with her Tkatchev release. Larissa Stewart just threw a nice routine and Kristin Sterner is looking much crisper on her handstands and the double front dismount.

[ top... ]
Delahoussaye is looking confident on the [ 12:46 AM, 01/26/03 ]

balance beam now that she has her first exhibition in the can this past Friday night. The wolf full leap is showing great amplitude as well as the switch leap to wolf to straddle 3/4. Allison Spidle is encouraging her to keep it up.

[ top... ]
Bama is looking good so far on the uneven bars [ 12:44 AM, 01/26/03 ]

long warm-up. We are told that Larissa Stewart will be exhibiting on the uneven bars today. Nebraska is throwing some tough-looking vaults and landing them well.

[ top... ]
There are a scattering of Nebraska fans [ 12:40 AM, 01/26/03 ]

already in the complex to go along with the Tide fans staight across from us. We are up against a gun show at the nearby Expo Center, which is adjacent to the State Fair Complex where the swine, sheep and goats are shown according to the sign and mural on the large building.

[ top... ]
Hello Bama Nation from Lincoln, Nebraska, [ 12:37 AM, 01/26/03 ]

in the heart of God's country. We had snow again last night but they know how to keep the roads clear around here. Thus, the Tide fans who are here to watch their ladies were able to get to the Bob Devaney Sports Complex with no trouble. We are watching the Crimson Tide warm up on the uneven bars as Nebraska warms up on vault. Rachael Delahoussaye is warming up on the balance beam.
