We hope to see all of the Tide fans at the SECs next Saturday Night at
[ 8:16 PM, 03/12/04 ]
7:00 pm (EST) in Gwinnett, Georgia. Roll Tide and goodnight from Ann Arbor, Michigan, where the Tide was victorious over the Wolverines, 197.725 to 197.025. Bama finishes the regular season 12-1 and will have another strong road score to contribute to their RQS, so we may see them move back up in the standings before next week's conference match-up. We will see you next week on-line after the meet due to SEC restrictions. Roll Tide!

Alabama wore the deep cranberry velveteen highlighted by silver sequins. Michigan was dressed in shiny cobalt blue on the shoulders and arms contrasted by a deep indigo blue velveteen torso.

Awards Ceremony!
[ 8:05 PM, 03/12/04 ]
Vault: Jeana Rice and Shannon Hrozek earn second place with a 9.925 and Alexis Brion wins it with a 9.95 (all three vaults were stuck cold).
Uneven Bars: Calli Ryals and Elise Ray tie for second and Bama's Jeana Rice wins it with a 9.95.
Balance Beam: Kroll of UM in third, followed by Elise Ray in second and Jeana Rice wins this one as well with a 9.95.
Floor Exercise: Becca Clauson and Lindsey Bruck score a 9.90 for third place, followed by Jeana Rice in second with a 9.925 and Alexis Brion wins it with a 9.95.

tykes demonstrate their brand of excellent gymnastics (they are from Gym America). Exhibition scores for all the Tide gymnasts will now be reviewed:
Bars: Larissa Stewart scored a 9.80 (stuck double layout).
Vault: Lauren Holdefer scored a 9.725 for her front pike 1/2 twist and Dana Pierce a 9.800 for her Yurchenko 1/1.
Floor: Dana Filetti scored a 9.80 for her routine.
Balance Beam: Rachael Delahoussaye inked a 9.775 and this was a better routine than the score indicated, so we should see her back in the line-up next week. She just was not in her "zone" tonight during warm-ups but came through during the exhibition.
[ top... ]
Delahoussaye scores a 9.775 for her beam exhibition.
[ 7:55 PM, 03/12/04 ]
Alabama will come out on top with a 197.725 to Michigan's 197.025. Ray received a 9.875 for her floor routine and Calli Ryals fell on her final pass so she received a 9.450. Michigan finished with a 49.350 on the floor to Alabama's 49.250 on the balance beam. Alabama still has work to do on the beam and they typically are a post-season team that scores well on this event, so we will look for them to kick it up a notch next week at SECs.
[ top... ]
Jeana receives a 9.95 for her beam routine.
[ 7:50 PM, 03/12/04 ]
Rachael Delahoussaye just completed her beam exhibition and looked much sharper than in the long and short warm-ups. She wants to show the coaches that she can be counted on when post-season competition comes, which is next week by the way!
[ top... ]
Jeana Rice is through her two layouts (flight series) and the wolf full (tiny
[ 7:49 PM, 03/12/04 ]
balance check)and she sticks the double twist dismount. Yahoo!
[ top... ]
Dana Pierce received a 9.775 for her beam routine and Mari Bayer is
[ 7:46 PM, 03/12/04 ]
through her flight series (bhs-layout-Korbut) and the front walkover to needle scale. However, she again is hesitant on the leaps and may not receive total combination credit as a result (switch leap-straddle-wolf) but she throws a nice double stag leap before dismounting with the gainer back pike, stuck landing. Elise Ray is showing on floor why she is one of the best dancers in the NCAA, enroute to throwing a 2 1/2 twist and ending with a double twist to Shushonova. Mari Bayer received a 9.85 for her beam routine.
[ top... ]
Shannon receives a 9.85 for her routine while Bruck received a 9.90
[ 7:40 PM, 03/12/04 ]
for her floor routine. Dana Pierce is now up for the Tide on the beam. She throws a switch leap to wolf with confidence and a strong flight series of a two-footed back handspring to layout. Side switch leap has one leg lifted slightly for balance. Nice leap series of wolf to two straddle jumps before she dismounts with a round off to gainer full twist, one step forward on the landing.
[ top... ]
Shannon Hrozek is through her flight series and the leap series with
[ 7:39 PM, 03/12/04 ]
no major problem so far, as well as the hitch kick to sheep jump combination and she will dismount with a double twist, one small step to balance the landing.
[ top... ]
Brion receives a 9.100 for her beam routine.
[ 7:37 PM, 03/12/04 ]
Shannon Hrozek is up next for the Tide. Bruck finishes with two front tumbling passes after opening with a double pike.
[ top... ]
Reeser receives a 9.825 for her routine and Alexis Brion is now up.
[ 7:35 PM, 03/12/04 ]
She falls on the third element of her flight series (bhs-bhs-layout), as she did during warm-ups unfortunately. So that puts immediate pressure on the next four gymnasts up. She completes the switch leaps in combination with no problem but has trouble again on the punch front. Nice 3/4 straddle and she dismounts with a gainer pike off the end of the beam, one hop. Mantilia received a 9.800 for her floor routine.
[ top... ]
Christine Mantilia is up first for the Wolverines and opens with a double
[ 7:34 PM, 03/12/04 ]
pike to Bond music. Nice cat leap full turn, a little stumble on the landing of her second pass (front tumbling). She finishes with two front layouts as her final pass.
[ top... ]
First up on the balance beam for the Crimson Tide will be junior
[ 7:30 PM, 03/12/04 ]
Michelle Reeser. She throws a flight series of bhs-layout-Korbut and a switch leap to wolf jump and another switch leap that she bends a bit at the waist and then moves to complete two straddle jumps before dismounting with a bhs-gainer full twist, chest high this week!
[ top... ]
Alabama on floor exercise scored a 49.475 and Michigan on beam
[ 7:28 PM, 03/12/04 ]
scored a 49.225. The running total after three events is Alabama 148.475 to Michigan's 147.675. The Tide will have to post at least five scores on balance beam without a fall to ice this meet.
[ top... ]
Rice receives a 9.925 (one judge rewarded the extra difficulty a little bit)
[ 7:22 PM, 03/12/04 ]
but we saw this easily as a 9.95 because she did not take any major steps that were out of control. Dana Filetti is now on the floor with her opening triple pass, landed well, followed by a booming double pike, landed better. She boogies to Shakira and then prepares for some front tumbling in her final pass and almost loses her foot grip but stands it up. Nice exhibition.
[ top... ]
Jeana Rice is up next and will open with a super piked full in, landed to
[ 7:20 PM, 03/12/04 ]
perfection! Her second pass is a front-front full-front pike, landed well also. Now for some Crimson Tide boogeying and a big grin for Ray Lyons as she moves into her final pass, a whip through to a 2 1/2 twist! Yeah! Landed beautifully. Great difficulty. Elise Ray receives a 9.925 for her gorgeous beam routine.
[ top... ]
Alexis Brion is on the floor next for the Tide and we could use a big
[ 7:16 PM, 03/12/04 ]
score to put extra pressure on the Wolverines. Alexis delivers on the first pass (whip to double tuck, perfect landing) and the second pass as well (front full-front full-to front tuck, another iced landing) and her final pass of a double tuck is also landed perfectly. Will she score a 10? Almost, a 9.950. Elise Ray is showing some of her own perfection, beautiful toe point and extension on that flight series (bhs-bhs-layout) and the side switch leap. She will get a 10 if she can nail the dismount, which she almost does (one hop back).
[ top... ]
Calli Ryals is off on the beam during her flight series so this will be a
[ 7:15 PM, 03/12/04 ]
major deduction. Deiley received a 9.775 for her beam routine, so they will count that score. Kite receives a 9.875 for her floor routine.
[ top... ]
Stephanie Kite is through her opening "E" tumbling pass of a front
[ 7:13 PM, 03/12/04 ]
through to a double full punch front and the second pass of a front-front full-front layout. She finishes up with confidence and the ladies engulf her with big hugs while the Tide fans are on their feet to cheer her on loudly.
[ top... ]
Clauson receives a 9.825 for her beam routine while Pierce receives a
[ 7:11 PM, 03/12/04 ]
9.875 for her floor routine. Deiley is doing a nice job on the beam, just a few glitches and a hop or two on the landing of the full twist out of two back handsprings down the beam. She always has terrific form and extension and is very confident on this event.
[ top... ]
Holdefer receives a 9.850 and Dana Pierce is through her opening
[ 7:10 PM, 03/12/04 ]
tumbling pass of a double pike (beautiful form and landing as usual). Second pass of two front layouts out of a front handspring are whipped to perfection and she is now dancing for the Wolverines and the Crimson Tide faithful. Nice ring leap before she moves into her final pass, which is a double twist punch front, right on!!! Roll Tide!
[ top... ]
Becca Clauson mounts with a punch front and has to check her balance
[ 7:08 PM, 03/12/04 ]
here and on another element a few seconds later but throws two layouts with beautiful form for her flight series. She dismounts with a running front full, one hop forward.
[ top... ]
Lauren Holdefer opens with a terrific double pike, no movement on the
[ 7:06 PM, 03/12/04 ]
landing (very high). Second pass of two front layouts out of a front handspring is landed well and she finishes with a double tuck, a step back on the landing. The Bama crowd here loves it. Bruck receives a 9.825 for her beam routine.
[ top... ]
Chelsea Kroll throws her beam routine with no significant problems,
[ 7:02 PM, 03/12/04 ]
including a flight series of a bhs-layout, switch leap to two straddle jumps and a hitch kick to front walkover, dismounting with a gainger back pike for a 9.875. Wow. Shannon Hrozek is through her first pass of the double pike, landed beautifully, as is the second pass (front handspring to two front layouts) and finishes with a double tuck, nice landing. She receives a 9.850.

Alabama finishes up on vault with a 49.600 and Michigan a 49.350
[ 6:54 PM, 03/12/04 ]
and the Tide has a running total of 99.00 to Michigan's 98.45. Bama needs to pour it on during the floor exercise. Let's ROLLLLLLBAMA!
[ top... ]
Alexis Brion just aced her vault for a 9.975. Ashley Miles just iced her
[ 6:51 PM, 03/12/04 ]
Yurchenko 1/1 as well and quickly turns to salute the judges for a 9.875. That's the lowest score since her freshman year (tied the 9.875 score). Meanwhile, Ryals received a 9.925 for her bars routine and Elise Ray lands her full twisting double layout with one step back, beautiful form throughout, which included two hop fulls.
[ top... ]
Jenny Deiley had a nice routine going on the bars, very smooth giants
[ 6:48 PM, 03/12/04 ]
and combination pirouetting but she lands the full in with a large step forward (excellent distance) and receives a 9.775. Jeana Rice meanwhile just nailed her Yurchenko 1/1 for a 9.925. Perhaps she was deducted for the limited distance but it was beautiful to behold.
[ top... ]
Brittany Comeaux just launched a super Yurchenko 1/2 on front tuck with
[ 6:46 PM, 03/12/04 ]
1/2 twist off, beautifully landed for a 9.90! Way to go Cajun gal.
[ top... ]
Filetti is through her routine (Yurchenko full twist on back pike off) and
[ 6:45 PM, 03/12/04 ]
finishes it with a hop back for a 9.85. Kroll receives a 9.85 for her bars routine, which included a piked Jaeger release. Lindsey Bruck just completed her routine and dismounted with a double front, one step forward on the landing.
[ top... ]
Shannon Hrozek just nailed her Yurchenko 1/1 for the fifth week in a row!

Judges for tonight:

Vault: Ray Lyons and Linda Morton
Bars: Judy Grenfell and Debbie Campbell
Beam: Debbie Campbell and Judy Grenfell
Floor: Ray Lyons and Linda Morton
[ top... ]
So the Tide is starting off with a strong score on the bars and next go to
[ 6:37 PM, 03/12/04 ]
one of their strongest events, the vault. Let's hope we can stick those landings for maximum scoring results.
[ top... ]
Jeana Rice receives a 9.95! Team total for the Tide: 49.400 on this event
[ 6:34 PM, 03/12/04 ]
to Michigan's 49.100 on the vault (Mirkovich struggled with her front pike 1/2, jamming the landing and taking a step forward towards the vault, for a 9.650). We missed Carol McNamara's vault, which was scored as a 9.850.
[ top... ]
Filetti is back! She threw a gorgeous Gienger release and landed her
[ 6:30 PM, 03/12/04 ]
double front with super confidence this week for a 9.825. Elise Ray received a 9.85 for her Yurchenko 1/1 and Deiley a 9.875 for hers, which she bounded backwards on, but she had greater distance. Mari Bayer completes a super uneven bars routine for a 9.875 (great toe point as usual and giant uprises, along with a piked Jaeger release). Jeana Rice finishes with an exclamation point with her stuck full in.
[ top... ]
Shannon Hrozek is through her routine and lands the double tuck with
[ 6:29 PM, 03/12/04 ]
a shuffle in place only. She was really going for the handstands and the toe point and extension were beautiful. She receives a 9.875.
[ top... ]
Ashley Miles just threw a perfect routine, nailing the toe-on toe-off
[ 6:27 PM, 03/12/04 ]
and the full turn to Tkatchev, perfect needle handstand transition to the low bar and a stuck double layout. It can't be done any better with a 5'8" frame. She receives a 9.875. Michigan's Mantilia received a 9.80 for her Hristakieva, deducted for a step and limited distance from the vault.
[ top... ]
Brittany Comeaux just nailed her double front dismount after completing
[ 6:26 PM, 03/12/04 ]
the rest of her routine with no significant problems, which included a huge Tkatchev release and nice handstands. She receives a 9.825.
[ top... ]
Up first on the vault for the Wolverines is Becca Clauson, a sophomore,
[ 6:25 PM, 03/12/04 ]
who throws a front pike 1/2 twist and lands it with a large lunging step forward back towards the vault, so this will be a deduction. She receives a 9.725.
[ top... ]
The three minute warm-up has commenced and Bama is working hard
[ 6:23 PM, 03/12/04 ]
to get those handstands, as every tenth is vital. They would love another super high road score going into SECs to increase the RQS. Bama is currently ranked #5, mainly due to not competing last week, so hopefully they can come out of here with a hot score to warm the fans up on the cold way back to the South.

[ top... ]
RaraRuss is up against the Michigan Blue Man with the cow bell that he

[ top... ]
Calli Ryals is also a senior and finished in the top ten in the all around
[ 6:13 PM, 03/12/04 ]
at the NCAAs twice over the past three years. Elise Ray is introduced finally as the Michigan fight song is played and the fans stand to sing along. Elise won the all around at the NCAAs during her freshman year (tied with Onnie Willis of UCLA). The crowd claps loudly as the announcer proclaims that she will be back for more year of competition.
[ top... ]
The Michigan seniors are now being honored, which includes Elise Ray,
[ 6:09 PM, 03/12/04 ]
though she is expected to have one more year to compete after taking a medical redshirt last year. Alison Rudisi is introduced first. She did not compete after her first year apparently and has since helped as an assistant with the team. Christine Mantillia is the next senior introduced and is an academic achievement award winner. She was out last year due to an injury but has come back strong this year.

Regarding the SEC Championships,
[ 6:00 PM, 03/12/04 ]
which will take place next week in Gwinnett, Georgia. We have been informed that the SEC will have one official on-line score-keeper through their site only, therefore there will be no on-line scoring or commentary allowed during the meet by any representatives of the seven teams competing. We will be allowed to post commentary either in between in the media room or at the end of the meet. So this is a bigger reason why we need our fans to show up in droves if you live within driving distance! Let's have another terrific turn-out and bring the trophy home for the second year in a row.
[ top... ]
Wow, the coaches are mixing up the line-up again!

Bars: Brittany, Ashley, Shannon, Dana Filetti, Mari, Jeana

Roll Tide Roll is being shouted across the way as the ladies depart with

fists pumping in the air. We will see Michigan's Elise Ray (redshirt junior) and Calli Ryals perform tonight. Ryals has been injured over the past few weeks but looks ready to go on all events tonight. Her ankle and Jenny Deiley's are heavily wrapped but we expect to see some wonderful choreography from each on the floor tonight, as well as strong beam routines. Elise Ray creates her own brand of magic on the floor and we are looking forward to her routine as well.

Alabama is not looking very crisp on the beam so Sarah is making them

Our weather is very cold up here (around 26 degrees) with snow showers
[ 5:35 PM, 03/12/04 ]
but fortunately nothing has stuck and it's supposed to warm up on Saturday. Alexis Brion is now warming up on the balance beam with her flight series and the punch front. Rachael Delahoussaye is struggling a bit with her leaps while Jeana Rice is nailing those layouts.

We want to say a big Roll Tide to our Alabama fans back home and
[ 5:31 PM, 03/12/04 ]
across the nation who could not make this trip, the last regular season contest for the Crimson Tide gymnastics team. Sam and Donna Cusimano, the Rickster in Bethesda, Maryland, Salto and Salsa (and Saltine) back in Birmingham, our wonderful president, Ken Donaldson and his wife Jane, Victor and Segail Friedman and Pooh Daddy, just to name a few. Hello to Eli Gold as well.

[ 5:28 PM, 03/12/04 ]
as her final tumbling pass on the floor. Warming up on this event are Mari Bayer, Filetti, Pierce, Ashley Miles, Alexis Brion, Lauren Holdefer, Stephanie Kite. Earlier during vault and bars long warm-ups we saw the usual line-up. Brittany Comeaux was looking especially strong on the bars and vault. Ashley Miles looks to be 100% as she warmed up on bars and vault as well.
