Alabama will start on the vault (they got the coveted Olympic Rotation)!

Next to the Tide advancing as a team, the best news is Jeana Rice
[ 0:27 AM, 04/16/04 ]
for the Super Six tomorrow night. Some more highlights from tonight's performance:
Floor: Crisp routines by all of the Tide gals on the floor, including senior Lauren Holdefer, sophomore Mari Bayer (beautiful routine) and great tenacity shown by senior Stephanie Kite, who we think was underscored (she threw her complete difficulty and had no miscues this time). Rice, Brion and Miles were as magnificent as always.
Vault: Alabama scored strong on this event but warm-ups were looking like they were going to go through the roof, as they were nailing every warm-up vault in the final minute before competition. This is where we missed Hrozek a bit and hopefully she will be back tomorrow night. Great performances by Rice, Brion and Miles and Comeaux for a 9.875 on her "pinball" vault.
Uneven Bars: Wow, shades of last year on this event during the 3 minute warm-up. They were missing connections (even Jeana!) but when the competition arrived, they performed like champs! Brittany started off in Shannon's position, then Dana Pierce performed like a trooper for Shannon, then Ashley just rocked her routine (All American) and Mari also (9.875). Filetti was super as well for a 9.875 and Rice put the icing on the cake for a 9.95.
Beam, we have already discussed. After "Mouse" slipped up the rest of the gals did a "gut check" to pull the team through like great teams must do. So there it is in a nutshell. We will have more for you tomorrow so be there for your Crimson Tide. Roll Tide and goodnight from Pauley Pavilion.

winning the coveted all-around title with a 39.650. She defeated Jeanette Antolin, Elise Ray, Kate Richardson, April Burkholder to name a few and was crying after the coaches broke the news to her and the team in a huddle a few minutes ago. What a tremendous accomplishment for our senior against such intense competition.

warm-up for the Tide but there are only so many lines here in L.A. We have great news to report, however, starting with the Crimson Tide advancing to the Super Six on Friday night with the second highest score of the night and of both sessions, a 197.325. And this was despite a nail-biting final rotation on the balance beam. Michelle Reeser, our mighty mouse, had her routine on beam counted technically as a fall because she slipped on her second element of the flight series and ended up having to land her Korbut against the side of the beam. But the rest of the team came through and they are relieved to be going to the big dance tomorrow night.

The Bama contingent is on its feet across the way (they have great seats)cheering on the return to the arena of their favorite team. We will provide a final report on the long warm-ups and then break until after the completion of tonight's session, at which time we will return to report the highlights. Hope we have some night owls ready to stick out the long hours back home with us.

the Yurchenko 1/1. Utah's freshman, Nicolle Ford, has the same music on floor as Alabama sophomore Mari Bayer. UCLA's Kate Richardson is looking strong on the beam and Utah has some strong, dramatic music for their floor routines. Five minutes remain in this long warm-up and then the Tide will return to the uneven bars.

Nice vault warm-ups by Filetti, Rice, Miles and Brion. Dana Pierce is

type of vault tonight. It looks like Shannon Hrozek will not be vaulting tonight so expect to see either Lauren Holdefer or Dana Pierce in her place. Lauren will only vault a front pike and Pierce vaulted last year at Nationals, turning in a strong 9.825 so we may see her again since she tends to compete the vault better than she sometimes warms it up.

Warming up on vault tonight for the Tide: Ashley Miles, Dana Filetti,

struggling a bit with her twisting of the Yurchenko 1/1. Brittany Comeaux just had a terrific vault run, gaining great distance on the landing. Brion likes this vault. Looking for a third straight first team All American title on this event.

While Alabama is on floor in tonight's competition, Utah will be on the balance beam, Arizona State on the bars and Michigan will be on the vault. Shannon Hrozek is receiving some last minute massage treatments by Monica Decker, the trainer, before she starts her timers on the vault. We will let you know how she looks as the warm-up proceeds.

Mari Bayer, Alexis Brion, Ashley Miles, Jeana Rice and Lauren Holdefer will be the remaining five to likely go. If Kite or anyone else has difficulty during warm-ups, look for Dana Pierce to be inserted.

with a 9.90 and Chelsa Byrd with a 9.925. On the vault, Chelsa also was the highest Dawg scorer with a 9.925. Georgia saw an uncharacteristic fall on beam from junior Michelle Emmons (flight series)and the remaining gymnasts had balance checks as they mainly struggled to stay on and not allow Nebraska to sneak into the third spot. Sapunar and Fritzinger had 9.80 scores on beam while Kupets a 9.825. Byrd and Ericksen scored 9.775 each.

[ 7:06 PM, 04/15/04 ]
Stanford looked best on the uneven bars and floor exercise (they had Olympic Rotation) while Georgia started off on floor and vault and was a little sluggish (49.225 for both events). Florida started off with lower than usual scores as well on the uneven bars (49.00) and beam (49.125), their two strongest events. But they reaped the benefit of being the next to last team on the floor (49.350) and the last on vault, where they stood up all six for a commanding 49.350 final tally. Chantelle Tousek has come through strongly for them on the vault (9.90) and Dooley also posted a few 9.90 scores. Erin Pendleton scored the highest on the bars for the Gators at a 9.850.

warm-ups when Shannon Hrozek tripped on her vaulting run and banged her shoulder into the mat. She iced it immediately and reportedly is ready to go tonight. The coaches will probably hold her off the floor since they have more than sufficient depth here and will see how she warms up the remaining events before deciding if she needs to be pulled from them. Everyone else is healthy and ready to go.

finished in third with a 196.775, to advance to the Super Six. This is the first time Florida has advanced since 1998. What stood out today in early session was the extremely tight scoring on the balance beam and the rather loose scoring on the floor and vault in the final three rotations. Uneven bars was tight at first and then loosened up considerably in the final two rotations.

National Championships. Alabama is going through long stretches at this time to prepare for their second session competition. Earlier today we were told that the online commentary would not be allowed until at the end of the first session. Unlike last year at Nebraska, when we were able to post between rotations, this year we have to collect our notes and file at the end, which will be CDT around midnight tonight. But we have some information for you after the first session and to alert you on a few changes that are possible in Alabama's session.
