Hello Bama Nation if you are still awake in Tuscaloosa and other [ 11:50 PM, 04/17/04 ]

places east of the Mississippi. We have great news to report from the final night of nationals. Ashley Miles successfully defended her vault title tonight and also won the floor exercise title, tying North Carolina's Courtney Bumpers (also a sophomore), with a final score of 9.375. Jeana Rice (9.9125)finished second on the balance beam to Arizona State's Ashley Kelly (9.950)but unfortunately fell on the uneven bars and finished last (9.2625). This was Jeana's only collegiate competition fall on the bars in four years. Alexis Brion finished in fifth place on the floor with a 9.8875.

We will have more to report tomorrow night after the individual events. [ 0:12 AM, 04/17/04 ]

We will see Ashley perform on the vault, Brion and Miles on the floor, Ashley and Jeana on bars and Jeana on the beam, which accounts for 6 first team all america titles. Only UCLA had more with 7. Roll Tide and we will see you tomorrow night! Bama finishes third, carries another trophy home and we will see if they can bring more hardware home after tomorrow night.

Going to the balance beam, Alabama was looking great with routines [ 0:08 AM, 04/17/04 ]

from Reeser (9.85 but routine was flawless), a 9.85 for Delahoussaye (ditto) and then Shannon was on her way to a perfect routine until the end when she was throwing the wolf to a sheep jump and had to touch the beam to keep from falling (9.450). Alexis came through with a 9.75 and then Mari (9.850) and Jeana (9.925) iced it to avoid a possible disaster. On the floor Bama looked solid as well with Lauren (9.850), Stephanie (9.850), Brion (9.900), Jeana (9.925) and Miles (9.95), resulting in a 49.475. The Tide finishes with a 197.125, tied for 3rd with Stanford. Georgia finishes in second at 197.200 and UCLA a rip-snorting 198.125.

Alabama started off on the vault with a strong but not spectacular [ 0:04 AM, 04/17/04 ]

performance. The highlight was Shannon Hrozek vaulting that Yurchenko 1/1 despite her earlier injury on Wednesday. Coach Patterson noted this was especially courageous because Shannon had a tough crash on Wednesday and was still wary but gave it the old college try, scoring a 9.850 tonight for her team. And we have her for one more year! Brion, Rice and Miles all vaulted beautifully but small hops on the landings were deducted accordingly. Alabama went on a bye next and then competed on the bars where the judges from beam on Thursday were judging. This is one reason the scores were very tight. Shannon again performed very well and we think she was underscored despite nailing her routine and the dismount. Bee Comeaux, Filetti, Miles and Bayer had strong but not great routines and Bayer was looking at a 9.90 or higher until her dismount (walked out of it after popping the landing in place).

We are back online now that the 2004 NCAA Team Championships [ 0:01 AM, 04/17/04 ]

are over. UCLA came out blasting on all cylinders and broke Alabama's 1996 NCAA team record by securing a 198.125 final score (Alabama's record score of 198.025 held for 8 years!). UCLA looked spectacular and no one was going to beat them tonight though UGA and UA and Stanford gave it a good shot at the beginning.

Our commentary at the end last night had a typo regarding Jeana Rice [ 7:39 PM, 04/16/04 ]

so we want to officially note that she did in fact win the All Around title with a final score of 39.650. There were a lot of happy faces back at the Doubletree Hotel and Jeana's was one of them. Now she wants another team championship, which is the reason she came to Alabama (see her press comments). Shannon Hrozek is looking in top form on the bars during the final seconds of this long warm-up and completes her full routine with roars of approval all the way from her teammates and coaches. Roll Tide! We will continue to follow them to the beam to see how practice progresses for her and the rest of the gals.

Alabama will essentially keep the same line-up for all four events in the [ 7:33 PM, 04/16/04 ]

wake of Shannon's bang-up during her vault run on Wednesday. She turned in a courageous performance in session two on Thursday night on the balance beam and will be back on this event tonight only. But we now see her doing warm-ups on the uneven bars as we write this, so things could change! She is smiling hugely so maybe we will see her in the line-up after all. If not, we will see Dana Pierce in her place, who also turned in a terrific performance for a 9.80 on the bars last night to help keep the scores going strong. Look for Dana to possibly be on the vault as well in Shannon's place.

We will briefly talk about the line-ups for tonight for the Crimson Tide and [ 7:32 PM, 04/16/04 ]

then scoot out of here until the competition is officially over. Remember, you can get the scores at the official NCAA site as the meet progresses but we will not be able to post on the results with commentary until roughly between 10:30 - 12:00 midnight here local time, which will be around 12:30 am CDT back in Alabama.

Welcome Tide fans to the Super Six, NCAA Championships in Los Angeles. [ 7:30 PM, 04/16/04 ]

We are in the middle of long warm-ups and Alabama is currently out on a bye after starting on the vault. Again, they will have the Olympic Rotation order tonight and will end on the floor in rotation six. The ladies were very excited when they got the word last night that they had drawn this order. This gives them their best chance to contend for the title against some fierce competition, which will include UCLA, Georgia, Utah, Stanford and the Florida Gators.
