Bama wins it with a 197.025 to Georgia's 196.175 [ 8:31 PM, 02/18/05 ]

Bama had a 49.225 on the balance beam, 49.400 on the vault and 49.225 on the floor, a 49.175 on the bars.

Rachael Delahoussaye is being interviewed by the radio crew for her dynamic lead-off performance on the beam tonight. She will be followed by Ashley Miles.

Ashley was asked for some comments as she awaits the radio interview questions and she responded: "This is the way it should always be for me, I figured out how to do the beam!" She is a tough warrior and did us proud tonight, as did each of the ladies. Bama went 24 for 24 tonight in hostile territory and brought the victory home.

[ top... ]

[ top... ]
Ericksen receives a 9.925 for her floor routine. [ 8:18 PM, 02/18/05 ]

Ashley Miles wins the all around with a 39.675.

Suzanne Yoculan and Sarah Patterson are on the floor together talking about the Breast Center dedication at Athens Regional. Talya Vexler is here and will join them on the floor mat with other guests supporting them. A hearty applause from the audience as a 100,000 dollar pledge is being presented to the hospital (Athens Regional Medical Center).

[ top... ]
Michelle Reeser is exhibiting on the beam and bobbles on her [ 8:16 PM, 02/18/05 ]

layout element but stays on (two-footed bhs-bhs-layout); leaps are looking good and she dismounts with a bhs-gainer full twist.

[ top... ]
Kupets received a 9.875 for her floor routine (double pike to open). [ 8:13 PM, 02/18/05 ]

Ericksen is through her booming opening double pike followed by the front-front full to front tuck (third element went up and back on the landing)and she finishes with a super high double tuck, rocked the landing. But it's not enough because Terin receives a 9.875 for her awesome beam routine and the Tide will take the victory home comfortably.

[ top... ]
Terin Humphrey is up next for the Tide and completes her [ 8:12 PM, 02/18/05 ]

mount (triple turn, known as the Humphrey) and the flight series: Kotchetkova-bhs-layout; switch leap to Omeliantchik; dismounts with a round off to double tuck, pop forward on the left leg on the landing but the rest of the routine was dynamite!

[ top... ]
Ashley receives a well-deserved 9.90 her beam routine. [ 8:09 PM, 02/18/05 ]

She worked hard for that one.

[ top... ]
Mari receives a 9.825 (stingy). [ 8:07 PM, 02/18/05 ]

Ashley will mount with a round off to layout stepout. Perfect!
Switch leap to switch side leap combination; wolf 3/4 this week; gainer back handspring to a layout (big smile); full turn; shoulder roll; dismount of a round off to double tuck; plenty of distance and height, one step on the landing.

[ top... ]
Emmons opens with a double layout, just inside the line [ 8:05 PM, 02/18/05 ]

and front full to front layout, step forward to balance the landing. She finishes with a double pike, solid landing as well for a 9.925.

[ top... ]
Heenan receives a 9.925 for her floor routine. [ 8:03 PM, 02/18/05 ]

Mari Bayer is up for the Tide. Perfect flight series this week of the front aerial to bhs-Korbut. Nice leg scale and the crowd goes "Ahhhh!" Switch leap 1/2 is stuck and the switch leap-straddle-wolf leap series is right on, stuck gainer back pike dismount! Her teammates engulf her.

[ top... ]
Shannon Hrozek receives a 9.650 for her beam and the Tide [ 8:02 PM, 02/18/05 ]

would ideally like to drop this score. Mari, Ashley and Terin, it's up to you gals to bring us three more solid scores so we can get out of here alive.

[ top... ]
Heenan is through the 2 1/2 to punch front and a double pike [ 8:01 PM, 02/18/05 ]

on pass two, slightly deep landing and back one step.

[ top... ]
Filetti receives a 9.775 for her beam routine. [ 7:58 PM, 02/18/05 ]

Shannon Hrozek will be up next for Bama.
Flight series: bhs-layout-bhs - she stands it up, leg lift to balance; switch leap to wolf, nice; hitch kick to sheep jump and she dismounts with a solid double twist, a step on the landing.

[ top... ]
Nikki Childs is up next for the Dawgs. [ 7:56 PM, 02/18/05 ]

First pass is a double twist out of a front, landed well. Front layout-layout-layout for her second pass. She pops out of her double twist in the third tumbling pass but the fans love it regardless. She receives a 9.825. WOOFFF!

[ top... ]
Smith gets a 9.750 for her floor routine. [ 7:54 PM, 02/18/05 ]

Filetti is now up for the Tide on the beam. Nice handstand to back layout. Straddle-straddle-wolf combination, full turn, tuck 3/4 leap; bhs-Korbut; sheep jump, small step to balance and then a dismount of the round off to double twist and she rocks the landing!

[ top... ]
Rachael receives a 9.85 and Dana Filetti is up next in the [ 7:54 PM, 02/18/05 ]

spot that Michelle originally had until Sarah made a last minute shift.

[ top... ]
Brittany Smith is up first for the Dawgs with lots of whistles [ 7:52 PM, 02/18/05 ]

to start off. She opens with a double pike, one step back. She finishes with a 2 1/2 punch front, some leg separation and a step forward but she stands it up.

[ top... ]
Rachael will start the Tide off on the beam [ 7:49 PM, 02/18/05 ]

and she opens with a perfect wolf full. Flight series consists of a bhs-layout, landed perfectly. Dance moves and then the wolf to Korbut. Side switch leap - great; more dance, a full turn and a gainer back pike dismount, stuck it cold! Whoosh!

[ top... ]
Three minute touch for the final events. [ 7:45 PM, 02/18/05 ]

Brittany Smith will throw a 2 1/2 punch front on the floor on the large mat and Michelle Emmons a double layout.

[ top... ]
Bama finishes on the floor with a 49.225 and Georgia has a [ 7:40 PM, 02/18/05 ]

49.00 on the beam. Running totals: Bama at 147.800 and Georgia at 146.700.

Michelle Reeser is exhibiting on the floor and completes her opening double pike very well and this week did not encounter any trouble on her second pass (front full to front layout) and finishes strongly with a front-whip 1/2-layout-stepout.

[ top... ]
Miles receives a 9.95 for her floor routine. [ 7:40 PM, 02/18/05 ]

[ top... ]
Brion receives a 9.900 [ 7:38 PM, 02/18/05 ]

Ashley Miles is through all three of her passes and the Georgia crowd gives her the heartiest applause they can extend to their arch rival. Heenan gets a 9.85 for her beam routine.

[ top... ]
Mari receives a 9.825 for her floor routine and Alexis is through [ 7:35 PM, 02/18/05 ]

her first two passes (whip-bhs-double pike and the front-front full-front tuck). She will finish with a front-front layout-front tuck, nicely landed as well. Kupets receives a 9.675 for her beam routine.

Heenan is up next for the Dawgs. Punch front, left leg lifted to balance the landing, bhs-bhs-layout flight series, solid; sheep jump; full turn and she dismounts with a double tuck, step back, chest slightly lowered. Good routine to end.

[ top... ]
9.775 for Nikki Childs and we thought that routine would score [ 7:34 PM, 02/18/05 ]

higher. She took a step back towards the beam on her landing of the gainer back pike. Kupets has a bend at the waist on one of her flight elements and hops forward on the dismount.

[ top... ]
Erin receives a 9.725 and Mari takes two shuffling steps back [ 7:32 PM, 02/18/05 ]

on her double pike opening pass. Very nice second pass of the front-front full to front tuck. Gorgeous dance throughout, she is extending her body into each dance element and will finish with a double twist and a sweeping salute to the crowd in her last dance element.

[ top... ]
Filetti receives a 9.825 and Erin Rightley throws another soaring [ 7:28 PM, 02/18/05 ]

double pike but steps just over the line during the landing check and this will be deducted accordingly. Second pass is fine (Rudi) and she finishes strongly with a front-front full-front pike, slightest pop in place (one foot) on the landing. Bama must concentrate harder on each element.

9.85 for Smith. Childs is through her flight series and looks solid on her leaps as well so this will score well.

[ top... ]
Emmons receives a 8.85 for her beam routine. [ 7:27 PM, 02/18/05 ]

Brittany Smith is through her bhs-layout flight series, one balance check on the landing of the second element. Nice switch leap-switch leap to wolf combination. Another wolf to standing back tuck and she finishes with a round off 1 1/2, legs separated in the air but she stands it up without a step.

[ top... ]
Hrozek is zapped by the judges for that one pass problem [ 7:25 PM, 02/18/05 ]

and receives a 9.700. Filetti stands up the double pike and grooves out to some nifty Aerosmith after she completes the front full to front full. She finishes strongly with a front full to front layout, perfect landing. Big smile at the end of this routine.

[ top... ]
Ericksen received a 9.85 on the beam and Emmons is showing [ 7:23 PM, 02/18/05 ]

senior stamina by throwing the two layouts without a break. But she falls on the punch front (too much adrenaline). Straddle-straddle combination, slight balance check on landing the second element. She dismounts with a double pike and puts her hands down on this element as well.

[ top... ]
Shannon opens for the Tide on the floor to salsy Santana! [ 7:21 PM, 02/18/05 ]

She throws a perfect double pike, no steps. Second pass of a front-front full to front tuck, low landing on the third element but she stands it up. This floor does not have enough spring for her. Groovy dance elements and she will finish with a double tuck, super landing.

[ top... ]
On the beam is Kelsey Ericksen up first for the Dawgs. [ 7:20 PM, 02/18/05 ]

She mounts with a front tuck, one leg lifted to the left to balance. Nice bhs-layout. Straddle-straddle-wolf and a round off to gainer layout off the side of the beam, stuck landing.

[ top... ]
Now the fans are getting excited because the Papa John's [ 7:17 PM, 02/18/05 ]

pizza person is roaming around and the student section looks hungrier than UGA VI, trying to grab that pizza carton from the cheerleader's hands.

[ top... ]
Bama has a 49.400 on the vault and Georgia a 48.375 on bars. [ 7:14 PM, 02/18/05 ]

Bama's running total is 98.575 and Georgia has 97.700, so the Dawgs are behind the Tide by .875. The Dawgs are always tough on the beam and Bama must be equally strong on the floor to stay ahead.

[ top... ]
Kupets receives a 9.675 for her bars routine. [ 7:13 PM, 02/18/05 ]

[ top... ]
Ericksen receives a 9.275 for her bars routine and this one will [ 7:11 PM, 02/18/05 ]

be counted in their final tally. Kupets completes her routine with a slight tap of the high bar on her full twisting Tkatchev release but she lands the double tuck without a step.

[ top... ]
Well, the crowd is dead, so you know Ashley just nailed [ 7:11 PM, 02/18/05 ]

her vault. Only the Bama Nation is on their feet to applaud that one. She receives a 9.975. UGGHHH!

[ top... ]
Kelsey Ericksen just fell on her mount on the bars and the [ 7:09 PM, 02/18/05 ]

Dawgs will have to count a fall as a result. Will the Tide be able to take advantage? Let's see what Ashley has for us.

[ top... ]
Alexis Brion receives a 9.95 for a stuck pike 1/2 twist. Huge [ 7:09 PM, 02/18/05 ]

smile on her face. She loves to compete big routines in Stegeman.

[ top... ]
Dowlen receives a 9.775 for her bars routine. [ 7:08 PM, 02/18/05 ]

Heenan completes her bars routine with a hop forward on the landing of her double front (9.825).

[ top... ]
Filetti gets a 9.775 for her full twist on back pike off. Bama has [ 7:06 PM, 02/18/05 ]

more variety of vaults than the Dawgs. Terin completes her 1/2 on 1/2 off front pike (1/2 out) and receives a 9.875.

[ top... ]
Bowers gets a 9.200. [ 7:03 PM, 02/18/05 ]

Childs completes a nice Gienger and pak Salto and takes a step back on the double tuck dismount out of a full turn (short). Beautiful toe point and giant-to-handstands were consistently on top of the bar for a 9.825.

[ top... ]
Shannon vaults the Yurcheno 1/1 for the Tide [ 7:00 PM, 02/18/05 ]

and from the jumbotron she achieved awesome distance! Small step almost in place and then back a bit. She receives a 9.775, so the judges definitely saw other deductions.

Bowers fell on her double layout dismount off the bars for the Dawgs so that will be a deduction of .5.

Britt vaults the 1/2 on - front tuck - 1/2 tuck off and stands it up beautifully! She receives a 9.825.

[ top... ]
Change in the line-up for Bama on vault. [ 6:58 PM, 02/18/05 ]

Shannon will start, Brittany will follow, then Dana F., Terin, Alexis and Ashley. Another terrific run by Kaitlin White on the Yurchenko 1/1.

[ top... ]
Sorry we could not get the score on Kaitlin's bar exhibition [ 6:53 PM, 02/18/05 ]

because a camera dude was standing smack in front of the electronic score stand. We'll see if one of the Tide assistants can get it to us later.

[ top... ]
Georgia leads 49.325 on the vault to Bama's 49.175 on bars. [ 6:52 PM, 02/18/05 ]

Bama will need to stick their vaults to keep the pressure on the Dawgs, who are always tough at home.

[ top... ]
Kaitlin White just nailed her full turn to double tuck dismount off the bars! [ 6:51 PM, 02/18/05 ]

How about that Allen, Texas? She threw the Gienger release and a pak Salto transition to the low bar as well. Way to go.

[ top... ]
Terin receives a 9.875 and Ashley Kupets a 9.90 for a terrific [ 6:50 PM, 02/18/05 ]

Omelianchik vault.

[ top... ]
Another solid bars routine from freshman Terin Humphrey but she [ 6:49 PM, 02/18/05 ]

will receive another deduction on the hop forward on the double layout.

[ top... ]
Ashley receives a 9.85 for her bars routine. [ 6:46 PM, 02/18/05 ]

Emmons received a 9.875 for her vault and Ericksen just threw a nice Yurchenko 1/1 but steps back on the landing. We have no way of gauging the distance on these vaults because of where we are at along press row unless we catch the replay on the jumbotron.

Shannon completes her bars routine and throws the Arabian dismount but has to take one step back and then another one on the same foot to stop her backward progress. She receives a 9.775. Not much reward for her extra difficulty tonight. Judges want to see those stuck landings.

[ top... ]
Bayer receives a 9.825 for her bars. [ 6:45 PM, 02/18/05 ]

Ashley Miles is up next and is through her Hindorff and nails the double layout and turns to salute the judges quickly before walking out too soon.

[ top... ]
Georgia's Dowlen receives a 9.85 and Katie Heenan throws [ 6:41 PM, 02/18/05 ]

the same vault (Y-1/1) but hops back on the landing.

Comeux receives a 9.700 for her bars.

Filetti is through her Gienger release and nails the double front dismount. Brittany Smith nails her Hristakieva vault.

Filetti gets a 9.85 on the bars. Mari is through the piked Jaeger release but hops forward on her dismount of the double tuck out of the full turn. This was a terrific routine until that point.

[ top... ]
Three minute touch is now up and let the meet begin! [ 6:39 PM, 02/18/05 ]

Georgia will start us off on vault with freshman Megan Dowlen. She vaults the Yurchenko 1/1 strongly, slight leg separation and a small step on the landing.

Brittany Comeaux starts the Tide off on the bars (line-up change). She is through the full turn to Tkatchev and lands the double front dismount with one step back.

[ top... ]
Georgia is dressed in fluorescent pink spandex with black [ 6:36 PM, 02/18/05 ]

netting on the arms and upper shoulders. Bama is dressed in the same electric hot pink and white, with hot pink chevron cuffs below the elbow.

[ top... ]
Well, this is definitely not a sell-out here in Stegeman tonight [ 6:32 PM, 02/18/05 ]

as there are six sections in the upper level to our right that are vacant and several seats vacant on the lower levels as well. But the crowd that's here is enthusiastic. The lighting in this arena is terrific and we should get some great shots for the post-meet commentary as a result.

[ top... ]
Wow, Suzanne has the hot pink on tonight. Her student section [ 6:29 PM, 02/18/05 ]

is now known as "Suzanne's Super Dogs". Like Mark's Madness back home in T-Town. Maybe our Ten Troupe could come up with a similar nickname, like Patterson's Posse, Sarah's Tidal Wave.

The national anthem is now being sung and we are about ready to get this one started.

[ top... ]
Alabama is being introduced and the Tide fans are yelling on [ 6:22 PM, 02/18/05 ]

both sides to our right.

UGA VI is introduced as the "special guest" for tonight and the Georgia fans give him the honor due with a standing ovation. He is quickly escorted off to avoid any panic spills.

The Dawgs are introduced (carrying roses) as they run through the Gym Dogs sign.

[ top... ]
Judges for tonight: [ 6:21 PM, 02/18/05 ]

Vault: Kathy Kuhn and Margie Pearce
Bars: Diane Thompson and Brant Lutska
Beam: Diane Thompson and Margie Pearce
Floor: Kathy Kuhn and Brant Lutska

[ top... ]
Georgia is introducing their alumni from days gone by. [ 6:13 PM, 02/18/05 ]

The emcee is introducing them by name and location of where they now live.

[ top... ]
Baton twirlers are entertaining the crowd on the floor as the [ 6:05 PM, 02/18/05 ]

crowd continues to file in. "Devil Went Down to Georgia" music is blaring away as they twirl those batons fiercely. Watch out, one just went flying across the floor mat. The Bama Nation is situated on two sides of the arena and started a Roll Tide cheer back and forth, followed promptly by the student section's booing. They think this will drown out our fans but RaraRuss and the crew keep it going strong. Roll Tide Roll!

[ top... ]
Bama on the vault tonight will see the following gals compete: [ 6:01 PM, 02/18/05 ]

Shannon, Kaitlin (!), Dana F., Terin, Alexis, Ashley

Bars: Ashley, Brittany, Dana F., Mari, Shannon, Terin

Beam: Rachael, Michelle, Shannon, Mari, Ashley, Terin

Floor: Shannon, Dana F., Erin, Mari, Alexis, Ashley

[ top... ]
Bama is finishing up with their mounts and dismounts on the [ 5:57 PM, 02/18/05 ]

beam and Ashley just landed a very nice double tuck. Plenty of distance from the end of the beam that time. She is followed by Terin's equally strong double tuck dismount. Nice hitch kick to a sheep jump from Shannon Hrozek. The ladies are now ready to exit the arena and prepare for the slugfest to come.

[ top... ]
On the balance beam the Tide is looking strong in their [ 5:53 PM, 02/18/05 ]

warm-ups. Going for the extra toe-point and extension. Ashley and Michelle especially look solid. Mari Bayer is throwing the front aerial-bhs-Korbut flight series tonight and so far is looking very good with this added difficulty. Super nice double twist dismount by Filetti!

[ top... ]
Bama now moves to the floor and the Dawgs to the beam. [ 5:27 PM, 02/18/05 ]

Bama will open with Shannon, followed by Dana F., Erin, Mari, Alexis and Ashley. Terin dances through her routine and tumbles a 1 1/2 to a 2 1/2 as her second pass. Filetti is practicing the double front Arabian but will not throw it tonight.

[ top... ]
Nice vault from Comeaux. Stood that one up straight as an [ 5:22 PM, 02/18/05 ]

arrow. Kaitlin White just twisted the 1/1 Yurchenko and that one looks like a winner. The second one just needs a little more push off the vault for maximum height.

[ top... ]
Nice pike 1/2 twist from Alexis Brion and the Y- 1/1 from Miles. [ 5:18 PM, 02/18/05 ]

Hrozek is struggling with the direction of her vault, still landing it to her left.

[ top... ]
Bama is beating the chalk off the runway before starting the [ 5:09 PM, 02/18/05 ]

15 minute long warm-up on the vault. Extra chalk can lead to slips.

Warming up on vault for the Tide: Alexis, Terin, Ashley, Dana F., Brittany, Shannon, Kaitlin

[ top... ]
Kaitlin White is expected to vault tonight (Yurchenko 1/1) and [ 5:07 PM, 02/18/05 ]

this will likely be in exhibition if the regular six gals have a strong warm-up. But then Kaitlin was on the floor last week to close for the Tide and we had not even seen her exhibit this year, so maybe she'll compete her vault for the crowd tonight. That means more depth for the Tide on this event, which will be critical as the team moves closer to the post-season.

[ top... ]
Perfect double layout off the bars from Ashley Miles. Bama is [ 5:06 PM, 02/18/05 ]

almost finished with their long warm-up and will move to the vault next.

[ top... ]
The Bama Nation is right in front of the bars and they're [ 5:03 PM, 02/18/05 ]

wearing a lighter shade of pink tonight, except for their leader, RaraRuss (tulip pink).

[ top... ]
Nice double front from Dana Filetti! [ 5:01 PM, 02/18/05 ]

Perfect double layout dismount from Terin Humphrey. We need another one just like that tonight.

[ top... ]
Brittany Comeaux likes these bars and Ashley is determined [ 5:00 PM, 02/18/05 ]

to master the Hindorff release off the high bar, which was giving her a little trouble earlier. She's got it now.

[ top... ]
Kaitlin White continues to look stronger on the bars each week [ 4:43 PM, 02/18/05 ]

and scored a 9.700 for her exhibition routine against Kentucky.

Shannon Hrozek is throwing the Arabian dismount in practice and has stood it up 2 of 3 attempts so far. The bars here are extra flexible and the ladies are having to adjust.

[ top... ]
The Alabama gymnasts were put through extra practices [ 4:33 PM, 02/18/05 ]

(starting with Saturday) after the less than stellar performance on the beam last week. They took a break on Tuesday and then returned to the gym on Wednesday for an intrasquad.

Right now both teams are continuing with the open stretch, this time on the uneven bars to flex out the legs before moving to their first long warm-up event (Georgia on vault and Bama on bars).

[ top... ]
Alabama is coming into this meet tonight ranked #5 nationally [ 4:25 PM, 02/18/05 ]

while the Dawgs are at #7. Georgia only last Sunday passed the 196 mark for the season while the Tide hit 197.175 in the third meet of the season against LSU. Bama rested several top gymnasts last week against Kentucky and had trouble on the beam (48.225), resulting in a lower overall score as a team (195.250).

[ top... ]
Alabama Gymnastics Tonight! [ 4:21 PM, 02/18/05 ]

From Stegeman Coliseum on the campus of the University of Georgia, we are live, getting ready to watch the teams begin their long warm-ups. It is 5:30 EST and the open stretch period has begun.

Alabama and Georgia gymnasts are running together on the floor exercise mat, both teams dressed in the Breast Cancer Awareness T-Shirts that the Dawgs promotional team came up with for their version of the "Think Pink" Meet.
