The Tide was ready to conquer the balance beam in the final rotation (six)
[ 3:04 AM, 04/22/05 ]
and Rachael Delahoussaye came through with the opening routine after struggling in long warm-ups herself. A 9.725 was not reflective of her super execution of the flight and leap series elements tonight. Michelle Reeser followed with a super routine (9.850), as did Shannon Hrozek (9.850) and Ashley Miles once again was looking so wonderful with her elements (perfect wolf full especially) and had to take one hop forward on her double tuck dismount for a 9.825. But she stood it up! Terin followed with a confident routine, no breaks this week, one small step back on her double tuck for a 9.90. Bama finished on the balance beam with a 49.150 and a final tally of 197.00. They advanced to the Super Six on Friday and garnered 8 first team all america titles in the opening session.

In rotation four the Tide went out on another bye before returning in
[ 2:59 AM, 04/22/05 ]
rotations five and six to the uneven bars and balance beam respectively.
Bama was red hot on the uneven bars, starting with a solid routine by Brittany Comeaux (9.80) and a wickedly conservative score for Shannon Hrozek's stuck routine (9.775). But then the Tide started to really kick it in. Dana Filetti was simply magical on the uneven bars, hitting every handstand, her super laid out Gienger release and she stuck the double front dismount cold. We were so happy for her we almost stood up and cheered on press row, a definite no-no. She is first team All America on this event for the first time in three years.
Mari Bayer scored a 9.825 for a great looking routine (hit the handstands and the pike Jaeger release and stood up the double tuck dismount with only the slightest shifts but was likely deducted for limited distance from the high bar on her landing).
Ashley Miles who had struggled again in long and short warm-ups on the cable bars, hit her routine like the champion she is for a 9.90. Her dismount was landed so perfectly that the entire arena broke out with applause. This set up Terin Humphrey perfectly, for the best routine of her freshman season, garnering a 9.95 for Bama's final total of 49.375.

In rotation three Bama moved to the vault and this is where the line-up
[ 2:52 AM, 04/22/05 ]
was mysteriously changed quite a bit by the coaches. They were trying to decide between Dana Filetti, Brittany Comeaux and Kaitlin White in some combination (only two) but ended up going with White and Comeaux and moved the line-up away from the normal one, which may have affected the team's performance.
Shannon Hrozek was struggling with her vault during warm-ups and ended up jamming it a bit during competition, bending at the knee on one leg and being deducted heavily by the judges (9.60). She is the front anchor and always super reliable and this may have shaken the remaining vaulters just a bit. The remaining vaults were solid but not stuck cold (Kaitlin White had a solid Yurchenko 1/1 with just a slight one foot check that should have scored higher, garnering a 9.80) and the judges separated the scores accordingly from Georgia's previoius rotation where they stuck most of their vaults. Ashley Miles ended up with a 9.90 for a small hop back, Alexis Brion a 9.850 (awesome vault) and Terin and Brittany, despite the unique difficulty of their vaults, were only scored at a 9.750 despite not having major steps or form deductions. The line-up went: Shannon, Kaitlin, Terin, Alexis, Brittany and Ashley. Bama had their lowest total of the evening at 49.05 on one of their strongest events this season. They should do better in tomorrow night's session.

The Tide was on a bye in rotation one and then went to the floor exercise
[ 2:47 AM, 04/22/05 ]
in rotation two. They scored a 49.425 and had great performances from all, starting with Mari Bayer (9.850) and Shannon Hrozek (9.850). Michelle Reeser (9.80) encountered just a tiny bit of trouble on her second pass (front handspring-front layout to front full) when she popped the final element forward just a bit on the landing. She opened with a terrific double pike, nailing the landing and finished beautifully with her whip 1/2 to layout-stepout.
Alexis Brion was moved to the fourth spot and had a perfect routine but the shift in the line-up may have cost her .05 to .10 (9.875 final score). This routine would have scored about 9.90 to 9.925 probably if she had been in the fifth position but the coaches were trying to bank on getting all three of the final scores to 9.90 or higher by putting the more difficult routines last (Terin's and Ashley's) and Alexis was just underscored in our humble opinion. Terin and Ashley followed up with great tumbling and presentation for a 9.90 and 9.950 respectively.

Day One - Session Two Commentary
[ 2:45 AM, 04/22/05 ]
Sorry for the late posting Bama Nation but the NCAA does have their rules.
By now you are aware that the Tide did indeed advance to their 23rd NCAA Championship night and they did so in the most competitive session. A large contingent of Bama fans were present and they were their usual loud and boisterous selves. Thanks for providing the support for the team throughout the competition tonight because it really helped energize them.
