In the post-meet radio interview Coach Patterson expressed how proud [ 10:39 AM, 04/23/05 ]

she was of the gymansts in the way they came back after balance beam to grab second. The Tide now has to say goodbye to seniors Shannon Hrozek, Alexis Brion and Michelle Reeser and all three finished up in magnificent fashion, hitting all of their routines: Shannon in the all around, Michelle on beam and floor and Alexis on floor and vault. That's a loss of 8 very solid routines that the coaches will have to replace in the off-season.

In Rotation Six, Georgia moved to the bars, UCLA to the balance beam, [ 10:32 AM, 04/23/05 ]

Nebraska to the floor exercise and Utah to the balance beam. The Bruins started to give away the meet with the first three gymnasts up (one of whom fell) and you could sense the momentum both Alabama and Georgia had at this point was not going to be relinquished. It seemed that every time Georgia would hit a bar routine dismount, Bama would hit a vault just as huge and the fans respectively for each team were in a frenzy from routine to routine.

On vault, Shannon Hrozek again hit her Yurchenko 1/1 the way we've come to expect from her, garnering a 9.90. Brittany Comeaux launched her "pinball" vault with superb height and distance, nailing the landing for a 9.95. Kaitlin White hit her Yurchenko 1/1 with the slightest of foot checks for a 9.875 and Terin Humphrey followed with her best Yurchenko 1/2 on - front pike - 1/2 off (pike out), standing it up chest high with only a small hop to the left on the landing (9.90). Alexis Brion hit a 9.85 (chest down a bit but wonderful height and distance). Ashley Miles knew she needed to stick her vault cold to get the 9.95 plus and she did to the delight of the partisan Bama fans for her second 10.00 of the evening. Bama finished on vault with a 49.625 and a 197.400 total (best of the season), second only to the Georgia Gymdogs 197.825.

Utah finished 3rd with a 197.275 and UCLA in 4th with a 197.150. Michigan at 5th with a 196.575 and Nebraska in 6th at 196.425.

In Rotation Four Alabama was on a bye and in Rotation Five the Tide [ 10:24 AM, 04/23/05 ]

moved to the floor exercise, where they rocked the house and garnered the highest team score of the night on this event, highlighted by super tumbling efforts from all six gymansts. Mari Bayer received a 9.90 from one judge but had to settle for a 9.825 despite throwing one of the best choreographed routines out there and hitting all of her tumbling passes. Shannon Hrozek saved her best for the last competition of her life, hitting the double pike and a superb double tuck at the end for a 9.875. Michelle Reeser followed with a 9.85, also one of her best dance presentations on the floor ever. Terin Humphrey rocked all of her super-difficult tumbling passes for a well-deserved 9.95 and Alexis Brion hit the highest double tuck final pass of the night, for a 9.925. Ashley Miles could only nail the double layout perfectly to best these performances, which she did in true Romanian fashion. The rest of the routine was awesome as well and she received a 10.00. Bama finished on the floor with a 49.600 and was starting to shake up the standings in a big way.

Rotation Three is where the Tide started to get a little tentative with some of [ 10:09 AM, 04/23/05 ]

their performances on the balance beam and the team as a whole seemed to suffer lower scores from the judges even when confident performances were thrown by at least two (Reeser and Hrozek for example).

Rachael Delahoussaye was throwing a terrific routine until her flight series landing of the second element (layout-stepout), which was bent at the shoulder for about two-tenths deduction. The rest of the routine was solid, including the switch side leap. Remember, Georgia was on the floor at this time but Bama seemed to be handling the noise just fine

Michelle Reeser hit all of her flight and leap series elements with confidence and had the slightest shift of her feet on the landing of the gainer full twist out of a back handspring. A 9.75 was definitely too low in our opinion. Shannon Hrozek also performed admirably for a 9.775 (took a check step to the left on her landing of the double twist that she tried hard to stick). Mari Bayer, Ashley Miles and Terin Humphrey all had balance checks in their routines that otherwise would have scored big when looking at how they performed the remaining elements. Mari checked on the front aerial, Ashly on her wolf full (completed a 3/4 turn and lifted a leg to balance on the landing) and Terin checked her combination after the Kotchetkova was completed but did complete the back handspring to layout-stepout with a slight balance check as well. She nailed the rest of the routine, including the double tuck dismount for a 9.825.

Bama scored a 48.850 on the beam and could have tanked the meet in at this point but went out on a bye and prepared to return with crisper performances.

Bama started on a bye before moving to the uneven bars in Rotation Two. [ 10:01 AM, 04/23/05 ]

In Rotation One, Georgia set the table high by hitting all of their balance beam routines and scoring a phenomenal 49.350, led by freshman Katie Heenan's 9.95 and freshman Nikki Childs' 9.90.

Meanwhile, UCLA in rotation one notched a slightly higher score jon the floor exercise with a 49.500, highlighted by a 10 from 5th year senior, Kristin Maloney. Utah was on a bye with Bama and Nebraska hit a 49.00 on the vault while Michigan started off well on the uneven bars with a 49.225.

In Rotation Two Brittany Comeaux opened for the Tide with a huge uneven bars routine, nailing her double front dismount for a 9.825. Shannon Hrozek also stuck her dismount and the rest of her routine for a conservative 9.850. Dana Filetti just slightly stepped back on the double front (9.825) and Ashley Rae Miles nailed her entire routine for a 9.90. Mari Bayer hit her best routine of the year, including the pike Jaeger release, beautiful handstands and the full turn to a stuck double tuck (landed chest high!) for a 9.850 (again, a conservative score compared to several routines that followed). Terin Humphrey executed a gorgeous toe-on 1/2 turn to Khorkina release and a stuck double layout dismount for a 9.90. Bama notched a 49.325 on the bars and prepared to move to the beam in Rotation Three.

Super Six Final: Commentary and Tidebits from Title Night [ 9:58 AM, 04/23/05 ]

What a great night of gymnastics, perhaps the finest display of team gymnastics at an NCAA Super Six that we have ever witnessed. Georgia goes from 12th seed to capturing their 6th Title. Alabama starts off hot on the bars and gets tentative on the balance beam but roars back into contention with the best floor and vault team performances of the night to nab 2nd Place. And Utah, UCLA, Michigan and Nebraska kept the pressure on at given points to make it a nail-biter to the end. Let's recount some of the exciting moments with emphasis on the Tide's performances.
