Alabama vs Iowa State : Post-Meet Breakdown of Routines ByTeam

Alabama Crimson Tide: Vault
Gymnast Score/Start Value Commentary/Highlights
Erin Rightley 9.625 / 9.800 Yurchenko Layout Excellent height, distance and form, landed with one foot back.  Could have been scored 9.70-9.75.
Dana Pierce 9.525 / 10.00 Yurchenko Full Twist She improved her block off the table this week and tried to maintain her form and extension a bit too long, leading to a late twist and a jammed, lunge forward again on the landing.  Hopefully this vault will come together soon for Dana.  She has been solid on vault for 2 years but mostly in a back-up role in 2004.  It's time to step forward and claim her spot on this event.
Shannon Hrozek 9.775 / 10.00 Yurchenko Full Twist Excellent height, form and distance but judges deducted sharply for her landing it off center and for the small one foot check in place.
Dana Filetti 9.775 /10.00 Yurchenko Full Twist  On - Back Pike Off Much better execution this week but she still needs more height and a stuck landing to get the big score.
Alexis Brion 9.850 / 10.00 Front Pike ½ Twist This vault was better than last week's but she scored .025 lower.  Landed almost chest high, stuck landing.
Ashley Miles 9.925 / 10.00 Yurchenko Full Twist Dy-no-mite! Effortless execution and she stuck the landing chest high though slightly left of the vault table.
Total 48.950

Iowa State Cyclones: Uneven Bars
Gymnast Score Commentary/Highlights
Katie Lasher 9.625 Full turn to Tkatchev release; front giant ½ to another giant ½ to double tuck dismount.  Rotation throughout this routine was slow, almost laborious at times and handstand positions were not consistently achieved, thus the lower score.
Ashley Alden 9.050 Giant ½ to straddle Jaeger (fall); full turn to double tuck dismount with nice height and form on the last element.
Janet Anson 9.750 Confident straddle Jaeger release, nice pirouetting but she had form problems throughout (failed to reach handstands consistently, lack of extension, toe-point, flexed feet).
Laura Kay Powell 9.700 Nice straddle Jaeger release, full twist to double tuck dismount, landed confidently.  Similar problem with soft knees and flexed feet.
Jade Kvach 9.300 During her mount she missed the high bar on her vault over the low bar.  She showed more difficulty however with a healy (a 1½ pirouette) to straddle Jaeger release combination and a double layout dismount, jammed a bit with one step back for balancing.
Erin Dethloff 9.350 Full turn to Tkatchev release and a very difficult full-twisting double layout (fell forward to knee on the landing).  Needs polishing to maximize scoring potential.
Total Score 47.725

Alabama Crimson Tide: Uneven Bars
Gymnast Score Commentary
Alexis Brion 9.775 She was on target the previous week in practice so the coaches put her up first as a sign of their confidence in her "prime time" performance capability.  Alexis responded with a very solid routine, highlighted once again by her incredibly smooth giant uprises to handstand positions and a full turn to Tkatchev release.  Dismount of a giant ½ turn to immediate reverse tuck off the high bar, landed chest high, with the slightest of steps in place on the landing.
Shannon Hrozek 9.750 She had to muscle up again this week on her mount, which this year consists of the giant straddle uprise to handstand position on the high bar - tilt over front giant full to a ½ turn on top of the high bar to a Gienger release  (nice tight form throughout), shoot-over to low bar, kip-cast to handstand (nice straight body and perfect handstand position on the high bar), blind change to ½ turn to a double tuck dismount, small step on the landing.
Dana Filetti 9.850 Nice toe-on straddle transition to the high bar and the full turn to Gienger release was timed perfectly.  She rocked the arena with her stuck double front dismount, landed chest high, no steps.
Ashley Miles 9.850 Shaposhnikova transition to the high bar, Hindorff release (huge) and the shoot-over immediate to the low bar had almost too much energy for even Ashley to maintain but she never stopped her momentum forward and landed the double layout with one step.  Powerful.
Mari Bayer 9.825 She redeemed herself well after an uncharacteristic 2-fall routine in Gainesville last week, hitting all of her handstands and the ½ turn to pike Jaeger release, sticking the landing of the double tuck out of a full twist, which was executed with excellent height and form.
Terin Humphrey 9.900 She awed the crowd with her super smooth, confident swing throughout this routine.  Major highlights: a toe-on ½ turn to Khorkina (Markelov) release on the high bar as well as a precision giant uprise to a perfect handstand position on the high bar to a pinpoint ½ turn while still on top of the high bar in handstand position (gasps heard from the crowd).  Her double layout dismount had one small hop on the landing, which is where the judges likely deducted a tenth.  We can't wait to see what else will be added to this routine.
Total 49.200
Kaitlin White Exhibit The freshman from Allen, Texas was able to complete her entire routine with success this week, highlighted by the full turn to Gienger release and the Pak Salto transition to the low bar.  She struggled with two of her straddle giant uprises, just missing optimal handstand position, but stuck the double tuck dismount chest high, no steps.  Kaitlin had struggled mightily during long warm-ups with her double tuck and Bryan Raschilla was obviously bemused but happy with the outcome as he high-fived her at the end of her performance.
Dana Pierce Exhibit In this routine, Dana also has a very smooth and tight body swing from beginning to end.  Very nice form shown on the ½ turn to two inverted giants.   What also stands out about this routine is the placement of her Tkatchev release near the end, so you know she has extra stamina to get through this; she ends with a giant ½ turn to reverse tuck off the high bar, one step on the landing.

Iowa State Cyclones: Vault

Vaults were again tightly scored this week for both teams.  Despite standing up 6 10.0 vaults, the Cyclones were heavily deducted for errors during pre-flight and flight, and particularly in terms of loose form, leg separations and steps on the landing (major and minor).  However, we think their potential on this event by the end of the year is great because of how well they attack their vaults. It was great to see the judges separate the performances more precisely.
Gymnast Score Commentary/Highlights
Jade Kvach 9.500 / 10.00 Yurchenko Full Twist Very limited distance, loose form during pre-flight and flight and a major step on the landing.  .
Laura Kay Powell 9.575 /10.00 Hristakieva Appeared to be a fairly smooth vault during the round-off entry; the ½ off to front layout was completed without a major break but this vault tended to go up and down quickly, thus distance from the vault table was very limited as a result and a hop forward on the landing led to a deduction as well.
Katie Lasher 9.675 /10.00 Yurchenko Full Twist Powerful run and confident execution of the 1/1 but piked down her twist and took a step back on the landing.
Lindsey Murphy 9.450 / 10.00 Yurchenko Full Twist This vault was thrown straight out flat and down, with a lunging step to the side and forward on the landing.
Erin Dethloff 9.650 /10.00 Yurchenko Full Twist Very powerful run and vault table was attacked confidently.  Loose form and step on the landing as well as limited distance from the vault table were likely deductions
Janet Anson 9.775 / 10.00 Yurchenko Full Twist She is a 1st Team All America on vault from 2004 and therefore holds the anchor position.  Her vault had smooth, tight body lines and position in the air was excellent, though she did pike down a bit for the landing and her distance from the vault table was noticeably limited.

Alabama Crimson Tide: Balance Beam
Gymnast Score Commentary/Highlights
Rachael Delahoussaye 9.70 She completed her wolf full, flight series (bhs-layout), the wolf to Korbut (back layout-kickout) and the switch leap side without significant problems but had tiny balance checks here and there that added up to about two-tenths worth of deductions.  Super execution of the gainer back pike; excellent leg extension and rotation was fluid, stuck the landing.
Erin Rightley 9.250 Fell on her layout (third element of the bhs-bhs-layout flight series) but recovered nicely to throw a confident switch leap-switch leap-Korbut combination and the straddle-straddle-wolf had excellent amplitude on the third element in particular.  She stuck her bhs-gainer full twist dismount off the side.
Shannon Hrozek 9.675 What a great routine this was (bhs-layout-layout, switch leap to wolf jump; hitch kick to sheep jump) until she prepared for her dismount and lost her balance for a moment near the end of the beam, bending at the waist (minimum of two tenths).  She dismounted with a strong double twist, one foot to the side again this week on the landing.
Dana Filetti 9.725 Flight series was solid (handstand to immediate back layout-stepout) as was the straddle-straddle-wolf leap series and the sheep jump.  She did a ¾ tuck jump and struggled just a bit on the bhs-Korbut (had to adjust her straddle landing position just a bit).  Small hop to the right on the double twist dismount, nice form and height.
Ashley Miles 9.675 She struggled a bit on the mount (round off layout-stepout) and had to windmill her arms and legs just a bit to stay on.  Switch leap to switch side combination had a tiny check as did the wolf full.  Gainer back handspring to layout-stepout was solid but could improve in form and extension.  Dismounted with a double tuck, one step back.  This routine has great potential to score big when all of the elements come together.
Mari Bayer 9.675 Struggles continued for Mari this week on the beam, this time on her front aerial to immediate bhs (stopped after second element and then bent quickly at the waist to shift her feet and avoid falling).  A beautiful side split scale and a solid switch leap to straddle-wolf combination, along with a stuck gainer back pike dismount were the clear highlights of this routine.
Total 48.450

Michelle Reeser Exhibit Our steady lead-off on the beam is still working to get into the line-up for 2005 and struggled on this night with her flight series, falling on the third element (bhs-layout-Korbut).  Nice switch leap to wolf combination but she was tentative on the switch leap to straddle (balked on the second straddle).  She nailed her dismount, the bhs-gainer full twist off the side.

Iowa State Cyclones: Floor Exercise

Gymnast Score Commentary/Highlights
Ashley Alden 9.750 Tumbling passes consisted of: round off-bhs-double tuck; front handspring-Rudi (1 ½ twist)-layout-step-out; front handspring-front full-front full.    Nice Big Band music and presentation.
Jade Kvach 9.825 Double pike (super high and excellent landing), front through to a Rudi; double turn (leg extended) to straddle Popa; ended with a front handspring to front full-front full.  Music was an excellent blend of classical and Led Zeppelin.
Laura Kay Powell 9.775 Bluesy music, with accompanying choreography.  First pass was a double pike, a little slide on the landing; followed by a double tuck (very high); cat leap full to cat leap (leg extended) and a final tumbling pass of a front-front full to front full.
Kacey Oiness 9.825 Opened with a double tuck to punch front (on safety mat), followed by a front-front full-front full, ending with a double twist.  Nice mixture of tumbling  and moves were polished and confident.
Erin Dethloff 9.825 She opened with a super strong whip to double pike, awesome!  She finished with a whip ½ - front full -front tuck (a little low in landing).  Leaps were limited in terms of amplitude and difficulty but she sold this routine very well.
Janet Anson 9.875 Very confident tumbler and choreography was strong in theme and presentation.  She opened with a bhs-to high double tuck, second pass of a 2 ½ to punch front and ended with a whip ½ - front full - front tuck.  Well-deserved score.  A little more expression probably would have led to a higher score.

Alabama Crimson Tide: Floor Exercise
Gymnast Score Commentary/Highlights
Erin Rightley 9.825 Front handspring to Rudi (1 ½ twist), double stag leap (barrel dance execution), switch leap full to wolf full, back handspring to a double twist (nice height and position in the air), front-front full-front pike, super landing.  Dance and presentation was solid, leaps had excellent amplitude.  It's starting to come together on this event for Erin.
Dana Filetti 9.800 Super opening tumbling pass of a high double pike, following by a whip ½ to front full-front full (a little off center in landing but stood it up confidently); finished with a whip ½ to front layout.  Dance elements included a cat leap full to hitch kick (one-leg tuck) combination and the moonwalk.  The Ten Troupe really liked this routine, especially Dana's middle dance sequence.
Shannon Hrozek 9.850 Solid opening double pike, followed by a front-front full-front tuck (super confident this week); ended with a high double tuck, wonderful landing.  Timing with the music was perfect and her dance elements included a switch leap to wolf ½ leap down to the mat and a straddle Popa to wolf Popa combination.
Mari Bayer 9.850 Opening pass of a high double pike, small check back on one foot; ring leap to wolf ¾ (leg extended) combination and a double stag leap (barrel dance execution).  Second pass of a front-front full-front tuck and a double twist for her third pass.  Well-executed routine in terms of tumbling and dance.
Alexis Brion 9.900 Whip to back handspring to super high double pike (landed chest high but had to take a small step forward to check the landing), followed by a round-off to whip ½ to front full to front tuck (awesome control and landing).  Finished with a front-front layout-front tuck.  Excellent presentation as usual. New music soon?
Ashley Miles 9.950 Saving the best for last, Ashley simply brought down the house.  Super opening pass of a double layout, followed by a front-front full-front layout (perfect landing); ended with a magnificent double pike and danced her way into the hip hop hearts of the Ten Troupe along the way.  Fans were not happy with the score.

Iowa State Cyclones: Balance Beam

Gymnast

Score Commentary/Highlights

Abigail Richey

9.700 Two-footed bhs-layout-layout (legs bent).  Straddle jump to Korbut (limited amplitude); running front full dismount.
Janet Anson 9.775 Hitch kick to aerial front tuck (one leg hitched, one extended); bhs-layout-layout; switch leap-switch leap-wolf combination and a double twist dismount, small scoot on landing.  Nice difficulty and original combinations that would score higher with more polished extension and form overall.
Erin Dethloff 9.675 Wow, she opened with a superb punch front pike, keeping the form throughout and pulling off a solid landing.  Unfortunately, the rest of her routine had balance checks just about everywhere (bhs-layout had a bend at the waist); Rudi dismount, hop back.  Very impressive difficulty, just needs polish as well.
Ashley Alden 9.825 Switch leap-bhs-bhs-layout (nice!).  Straddle-straddle leap series; a gainer layout-stepout; dismounted with a round-off to gainer full twist, one step back on the landing. High score of the meet on this event.
Jade Kvach 9.500 Gainer layout-stepout-j'ete; bhs-bhs-layout (bend at the waist); full turn (bend at the waist); nice double twist dismount.
Laura Kay Powell 9.750 Back handspring-layout-stepout; swtich leap-straddle-straddle (travelled a bit); hitch kick to side Somi (bent sharply at the waist on landing but stayed on); dismounted with a bhs-gainer full twist (hop to the side).  Score seemed a little generous considering the form deductions.
