[Buzz]
- The biggest buzz of the week has to go to the GymTide’s alums. There were far too many on hand to try to name them all. However, we do want to make special mention one of the GymTide’s most recent graduates, Michele Reeser. Michele has been awarded a Medalist Club Post-graduate Scholarship of $5000.00. Of all the many things the Medalist Club does, we are by far the most proud of the Post-graduate Scholarship fund - and, Michele, we are also very proud of you and all of your many accomplishments, both on and off the competition floor.
- Melanie Banville, Dana Filetti, Terin Humphrey, Brittany Magee, Cassie Martin, Ashley Miles, Ashley O’Neal, and Kaitlin White – what do they all have in common? They have each competed or exhibited a 10.0 start-value vault this season.
- As far as they knew, the meet was still in doubt. The two teams were neck and neck with only Ashley Miles’ floor routine left. Never the less, having completed all of their routines, the Stanford gymnasts lined up along the balance beam side of the floor mat and cheered and clapped for Ashley during her routine. Pure class - The Bear would have been proud.
- Speaking of Stanford gymnasts, Liz Tricase came into the meet having earned three straight perfect 10.0’s on uneven bars. Don’t let her 9.875 on this night fool you though; she had a dynamic routine. Her back-to-back Tkachevs were described by GymTide radio’s Leesa Davis as “men’s gymnastics”, an apt description of Tricase’s astounding skills.
- Another GymTide alum in attendance was Patti Rice Eggars, who was on hand to receive the Sarah Patterson Distinguished Alumni Award. Among many other accomplishments, Patti performs an invaluable service for the Medalist Club. She is responsible for reviewing, and presenting for approval to the Medalist Club board of directors, the candidates for Medalist Club Post-graduate Scholarships
- Melanie Banville and Terin Humphrey engaged in a friendly, but very close, competition all evening for the all-around title, with Melanie prevailing by .075 on the strength of her meet-clinching 9.90 floor routine.
- Melanie also had another treat; she had a reunion of sorts with her former teammate from the Ottawa Gymnastics Centre and the 2004 Canadian Olympic team, Heather Purnell. Heather comes from quite an athletic family. According to her bio on the Stanford gymnastics site, her dad is a former professional Canadian football player, her mom is a former professional golfer, and her sister is a sprinter on Stanford’s track team.
- The second biggest buzz at the meet concerned next week's meet. It will be the last home meet for Bama's senior class of Mari Bayer, Rachael Delahoussaye, Dana Filetti, Ashley Miles, and Dana Pierce. Every graduating class is irreplaceable and this one is no different. However, this group’s legacy of commitment, hard work, positive attitudes, and outstanding accomplishments will continue to benefit the team for years to come. Let's 'fill it up' and send our super seniors out in style!
