- This is what the GymTide has worked for all year: to be out on the floor on the last night of the championship with a chance to win it all. Thanks to some incredible teamwork in their final rotation, the balance beeam, that's exactly what Bama will have - a chance.
- Brittany Magee's fall on beam immediately brought to mind the 1996 Championship and Alabama's 'All-Everything', Meredith Willard. Just like Brittany, Meredith had been an absolute 'rock' leading off on beam all year, then suffered a fall at Nationals. And the current version of the Bama beam team responded the same way as the '96 crew, they went '5 for 5' to save the day. There was no way the team was going to let Brittany down after she had set them up perfectly all year. Really, that's what college gymnastics is all about.
- The vault scores were fairly tight, so it seemed, all afternoon. In fact, at times the vault seemed out of phase with the rest of the events. Maybe it's because of all the extra time given to vault to warm up. Whatever it was, the whole odd afternoon on vault can be summed up with one of the strangest occurances we have ever seen in college gymnastics. There was some problem with a small mat that the LSU vaulters were using to cushion thier round-offs onto the springboard. The mat appeared to shift when one of the LSU vaulters hit it, apparently causing her to balk on her vault and land in a heap after she went over the vault table. After a few protests from the gymnast and the coach who had set the mat, the judges conferenced and awarded her a 'do-over'. Honesty compels us to admit that we are still, well, bewildered? incredulous? stunned?
- The other two events came off in a more normal fashion, with only the tight scoring for the afternoon session to deal with for the Tide. Ashley Miles was once again sensational on floor with a flawless routine. Melanie Banville and Cassie Martin had to do some quick thinking during their bar routines, but both managed to bring home good scores. Brittany Magee and Terin Humphrey both put up 9.85's on floor which on any given night could have been a tenth higher. Dittos for Melanie with her 9.825 on floor.
- What can you say about Erin Rightley? She has simply gone to the next level and performed like a champion all year. And what a great leader she has become - not to mention a fine example of the notion that hard work and perseverance pays off.
- Now, on to the Finals! Roll Tide!!!
