Bama's Ashley Miles finished second in the all around, Melanie Banville fourth

Melanie tied for 1st on the uneven bars and Ashley tied for 1st on the floor with Brittany Magee and Kelsey Ericksen of UGA. Miles is the only gymnast in SEC history to claim an event title every year of competition (has won the floor or tied for first every year).

After sitting out one more bye in rotation six, Bama headed to the floor [ 9:17 AM, 03/26/06 ]

in rotation seven to close it out. And while the competition was already secured by Georgia (the Tide would have to hit a team score on floor of 49.800 just to tie the Dawgs), Bama was still competing for pride and for many members it was their final SEC competition. Freshman Ashley O'Neal electrified the Bama fans by posting a 9.825 (double tuck, front-front full-front layout, finished with a double pike) with dramatic dance and a beaming smile. Erin Rightley nailed all of her passes (huge double pike to open, front through to a 1 1/2 twist to a layout step-out, front-front full to front layout to close) and selled the routine very well for a 9.875. Brittany Magee had her best performance of the year after struggling for the past two weeks (9.95), hitting the very difficult 1/2 in 1/2 out and the whip-whip-double pike, closing with the E tumbling pass of a front through to a double twist. Melanie Banville was close to matching this score with difficult tumbling and dance of her own (pike full-in to open, triple turn, front-front full to front layout, double pike to close), hitting all of her passes in the process for a 9.90. Terin Humphrey encountered problems on the second pass, sitting down the second element of the 2 1/2 twist to punch front but she hit the opening double front Arabian and the closing double pike just fine (9.150). The team ended with a 49.500 on this event, one tenth shy of the Dawgs on floor but three tenths shy of the final victory score.

In rotation five, Bama moved to the balance beam and they definitely had [ 9:08 AM, 03/26/06 ]

the momentum behind them. A 9.800 by freshman Brittany Magee (slight shoulder drop on the punch front landing and a small step back on the double tuck dismount) started the team off well. Freshman Melanie Banville continued to show her growing confidence on this event with a 9.85, highlighted by a split leap full, bhs to layout step-out, punch front (rock solid), switch leap to straddle-straddle and a double twist dismount. Ashley Miles hit her best routine of the year (9.875), nailing the difficult opening mount (round off layout step-out onto the beam) and sticking the double twist dismount. Junior Erin Rightley (9.825) and Terin Humphrey (9.825) had strong routines as well without significant breaks, Humphrey hitting her round off to 1 1/2 twist dismount very well. Senior Mari Bayer hit a 9.75 set that would have scored higher but she had to scoot back a bit on the landing of her gainer back pike dismount. The rest of the routine was very solid and free of major balance checks. The Tide finished with a team score of 49.175, best since the Florida meet in January.

In rotation four, the Tide headed to the uneven bars where they nailed [ 9:01 AM, 03/26/06 ]

almost every dismount, enroute to a 49.325 team score.

Senior Ashley Miles started off with a superb routine (9.875), hitting all major handstands, the Hindorff release and Shaposhnikova transition move and she stuck the double layout dismount to the elation of the partisan fans at the BJCC. This fueled Cassie Martin (9.85) to hit one of her best routines of the season (stuck the dismount of a full turn to double tuck), as well as Mari Bayer (9.85), Melanie Banville (9.90) and Dana Filetti (9.800), who was scored lower for a split in the legs during the downward re-grasp of the Gienger release and she also had to take a balance step on the landing of her double front. Sophomore Terin Humphrey closed out with a 9.85, just missing a stuck double layout landing of her own.

Alabama drew the coveted bye-vault rotation order [ 8:57 AM, 03/26/06 ]

and experienced tight scoring right off the bat. However, they stay focused and completed their vaults well with the highest score being earned by senior Ashley Miles for a 9.90. Strong Yurchenko 1/1 vaults were thrown also by Brittany Magee (9.775), Melanie Banville (9.800), and Kaitlin White (9.725) and a Hristakieva was almost stuck, small step only by senior Dana Filetti (9.775). Sophomore Terin Humphrey, limited in practice this past week due to flu symptoms, managed a 9.675 for her Yurchenko 1/1 after jamming the landing a bit and stepping forward back towards the vault table. This score was thrown out and the Tide took a 48.975 back into the locker room for their second straight bye.
