Post Meet Commentary: Alabama v Georgia (February 10, 2006)

It was another terrific, nail-biting competition that took place between the Alabama Crimson Tide and the Georgia Bulldogs this past weekend at Coleman Coliseum.  The Dawgs grabbed the win by a whisker of UGA VI’s muzzle, 196.625 to 196.575, which was not decided until the final routines from each team were thrown. And despite the loss, the Tide had plenty of chest-thumping moments: (1) the coaches were proud to see how the freshmen performed with impressive confidence and demonstrated their readiness to challenge the defending national champs from start to finish.  (2) Senior Mari-Christine Bayer showed intense fortitude on the balance beam after several weeks of frustrated outcomes on this event and received a standing ovation from the partisan crowd for her successful routine. (3) Senior Ashley Miles once again demonstrated why she remains the best thing going on vault and floor exercise in the NCAA.  She is simply untouchable in our admittedly biased eyes.   So let’s look at where the Crimson Tide as a team looked sharp against the Dawgs and where they need to polish up to get the bigger scores down the road as we head towards SECs and Nationals.

Vault Score Post Meet Commentary on Skills Executed and Deductions
1 Melanie Banville 9.800 Yurchenko 1/1 Big vault in the air as well but a high hop in place on landing cost her the higher score too.
2 Kaitlin White 9.850 Yurchenko 1/1 The coaches adjusted the vault table height for her and the improvements were obvious.  Her blocking off the table this week garnered much better height and her body form was extended better throughout the twisting.  She had one step back on the landing.
3 Dana Filetti 9.850 Hristakieva (Yurchenko ½ off – front layout) This vault was again well-centered, had great height and her form was maintained throughout. The landing was also well-controlled, one small step forward only; deserved about .05 higher in our opinion.
4 Terin Humphrey 9.825 Yurchenko 1/1 Excellent vault in the air but too much adrenaline led to a large hop back on the landing.
5 Brittany Magee 9.875 Yurchenko 1/1 Really big vault.  Landed chest high but had a hop back on landing.  Wonderful height and form maintained throughout the landing.
6 Ashley Miles 9.925 Yurchenko 1/1 Small hop back on landing.  Dynamic vault.
EX Ashley O'Neal 9.750 Front Pike ½ Twist Legs were split on entry and a little later on landing but this too was a huge vault in the air.  Needs a little more distance from the vault table to garner the higher score.

Uneven Bars Score Post Meet Commentary on Skills Executed and Deductions
1 Kaitlin White 9.700 Except for the rather jarred landing (requiring a step back) of the double tuck out of a full turn, this was a very solid routine: highlights included a full turn to Gienger followed by a pak Salto.
2 Cassie Martin 9.775 Toe-on toe-off to immediate Tkatchev to pak Salto combo looked terrific.  Coach suspects she lost about one tenth due to her rhythm slowing down a bit towards the end of the routine (front giant ½ turn to giant to double tuck dismount) and of course when she took a small step back on the landing of her dismount.
3 Ashley Miles 9.275 Fell on the huge Hindorff release that she pushed a little too far out.  Her perfect landing of the double layout dismount elicited hearty applause from the crowd.
4 Melanie Banville 9.775 Mel looked a little nervous while executing some of her elements but adjusted where she needed. Executed a very nice toe-on toe-off to full turn to Tkatchev, followed by a straddle back to handstand on the low bar.  She had to do a ½ turn before switching back under the low bar to cast back to a toe-on toe-off straddle release to the high bar but never lost her rhythm. She ended with a double layout dismount, slight foot shifting on the landing.
5 Dana Filetti 9.825 Just missed vertical this week on two handstands but drilled the landing of her double front dismount, obtaining great distance from the bars as well.  Beautiful laid out Gienger, marred only by a slight split at the ankles during the follow through.
6 Terin Humphrey 9.900 Great control of all elements, including the Khorkina and Gienger release moves and the dismount of a double layout, which she stuck after landing it chest high.  We saw a small deduction on the pirouetting sequence when she was not completely vertical.
EX Courtney Priess Full turn to Tkatchev looked strong; just missed vertical on two handstands and the toe-on toe-off was entered from a slightly slanted body angle on the high bar, so the judges may have deducted here a bit.  Excellent execution and landing of the Arabian double front dismount.

Balance Beam Score Post Meet Commentary on Skills Executed and Deductions
1 Brittany Magee 9.825 Slight leg lift on the landing of the flight series, second element (one hand back handspring to layout step-out); rest of the routine was solid: front aerial, switch leap to wolf, punch front, round off to a high double tuck dismount, one step on the landing.
2 Ashley O'Neal 9.800 Back handspring to layout-stepout, switch leap to straddle-straddle; front punch (very nice), double front dismount (tuck), one step back on the landing. A little more polish and additional dance moves could push this score up in the next few weeks.
3 Mari-Christine Bayer 9.750 Other than hitting all of her skills, what stood out about this routine is that Mari did not smile AT ALL until she safely landed her dismount of the gainer back pike.  We went back and reviewed the tape to make sure this was not our imagination.  She had a consistent, fierce look of concentration and determination on her face that refused to give away any tenths this week.  The crowd was vociferous in their disapproval of the judges’ final score.  Mari was happily mobbed by her teammates.  Note to Mari: Keep that fierce look on your face during beam from now on. Main elements: bhs to layout step-out, side split scale, front aerial to another split scale pose, switch leap ½ turn, double stag jump, switch leap to side straddle jump combo, gainer back pike dismount.
4 Erin Rightley 9.825 Another confident routine this week marred only by one step back on the landing of the bhs to gainer full twist dismount.  Front aerial, bhs to layout step-out, switch leap to straddle jump, switch leap to pike jump (waist high execution of this element).
5 Cassie Martin 9.875 All elements executed with nice polish and flow: switch ring leap, front aerial, bhs to layout step-out, switch leap to double stag, bhs to gainer full twist dismount, stuck the landing chest high.
6 Terin Humphrey 9.325 She fell on the layout step-out element of her flight series (full twisting bhs to bhs to layout step-out).  She was also a little low on the punch front, requiring a step to balance the landing as well.  The rest of the routine was solid, including the switch leap to wolf to Omeliantchik sequence; a little scoot observed on the gainer full twist dismount.

Floor Exercise Score Post Meet Commentary on Skills Executed and Deductions
1 Ashley O'Neal 9.750 Opening high double tuck, one balance step back, followed by a double pike as her second pass, jammed just a bit as she was also going for the stick.  Finished with a strong front-front full twist to front layout, very nice control and timing with the choreography.  Overall, her presentation was one of the best of the evening in terms of showmanship; she works hard to play to the crowd from start to finish.
2 Erin Rightley 9.800 Booming opening double pike, followed by the front-front full twist to a front layout, ending with a front through to a 1 ½ twist (Rudi).  A little more polish and control on the final tumbling pass will lead to higher scores in the future.
3 Terin Humphrey 9.675 Awesome opening pass of a double front Arabian, stuck the landing chest high.  Also stuck the second pass of a   2 ½ twist to punch front, just a little off direction from the corner and a tad low on the landing of the last element.  Finished with a double pike, jammed the landing a bit, step forward to counter.  It was great to see Terin throw the difficulty and stand up each pass.  A little more polish and this routine will be ready for post-season competition.
4 Brittany Magee 9.875 She was caught up by the crowd’s roar of approval after hitting her opening pass of the ½ in ½ out and had to think a moment before remembering her next dance moves.  Later on, she had a slight balance check on a dance move while she worked on the floor before her last pass.  Final pass of a front handspring to a front double full twist was perfectly executed.
5 Melanie Banville 9.825 Super opening pass of a pike full in, followed by a 2 ½ twist to punch front.  She was off her music by about 2 beats at the end when she took a little longer to rest before starting the final tumbling pass.  Finished with a double pike, slightly stiff-legged the landing as s he went for the stick.  She also seemed to be a bit distracted after nailing her opening pass and hearing the eruption of the crowd in response, similar to Brittany’s reaction.  She appeared to forget her next two arm movements that lead into another dance move prior to her triple turn but quickly recovered and moved into the rest of her routine.
6 Ashley Miles 9.950 A whisper of a hop observed on the landing of her first pass (double layout) likely opened the door for the judges to deny the 10.  Electric.
