Post Meet Commentary: Alabama v Arkansas (February 17, 2006)

Here’s the lowdown on how the Tide muzzled the Hogs last Friday Night in Coleman Coliseum, 195.825 to 194.150.  Another terrific crowd was on hand to cheer the team on to victory.  Bama is now 11-1 and will be off this weekend (February 24th) but back on the road again against LSU on March 3.

Vault Score Post Meet Commentary on Skills Executed and Deductions
1 Kaitlin White 9.750 Yurchenko 1/1 We thought this was one of her best-controlled vaults from the past two seasons.  She was first up in the line-up this week and this may have affected the judges not wanting to give too high a score to start off the rotation.
2 Terin Humphrey 9.725 Yurchenko 1/1 Soft knees observed during the twist and she again took a large hop back on the landing, a little off center as well.
3 Melanie Banville 9.825 Yurchenko 1/1 Stuck the vault but chest down slightly, arms waved a bit to control the landing.
4 Dana Filetti 9.825 Hristakieva (Yurchenko ˝ off – front layout) Almost stuck this one.  Had to step back slightly but also landed it with legs apart, hence the lower score.
5 Brittany Magee 9.900 Yurchenko 1/1 This vault was even better than the Kentucky vault that yielded the higher score three weeks ago.
6 Ashley Miles 9.900 Yurchenko 1/1 Small hop back on landing.
EX Ashley O'Neal 9.700 Front Pike ˝ Twist Limited distance from the vault table despite great height and blocking.  Continues to struggle with split legs on entry and twisting; step to the side on landing as well.
Team Total 49.200
Uneven Bars Score Post Meet Commentary on Skills Executed and Deductions
1 Cassie Martin 9.725 Had to counter part of her movements on the low bar with a quick-thinking straddle switch move under before kipping back to handstand.  Beautiful toe-on toe-off to Tkatchev to pak Salto combination and a stuck double tuck, slightly bent forward at waist to save.
2 Ashley Miles 9.700 Other than one step forward on the landing of her double layout (anywhere from .05 to .10 deduction) this routine was rock solid: the Shaposhnikova transition and Hindorff release moves were super highlights.  One judge scored this a 9.60, the other a 9.80.  Maximum deduction taken by one judge (3 tenths) for the shoot-over transition not being “up to competition” in regards to the rest of her routine? And she even executed this move with flair!
3 Melanie Banville 9.800 Mel also had excellent difficulty (toe-on toe-off to full turn to Tkatchev, awesome double layout dismount, stuck landing). Deductions occurred likely during the straddle back to handstand (did not hit perfect vertical position) and for limited amplitude on the transition move back to the high bar (toe-off straddle release).
4 Courtney Priess 9.700 Missed perfect vertical position on two handstands but hit the major moves, including the full turn to Tkatchev, toe-on toe-off to giant to Arabian double front (stuck the landing).
5 Dana Filetti 9.775 Loose legs and separation on the Gienger release move cost her a higher score, as did a small hop on the double front dismount (cowboy form observed as well).
6 Terin Humphrey 9.800 Good difficulty (hit both major release moves and a stuck double layout dismount) but deductions likely occurred for loose form during the Gienger (knees bent, slight leg separation as well) and for not hitting perfect handstands on the pirouetting combinations.
EX Mari-Christine Bayer Just a little bit past vertical on her first giant uprise to handstand.  Confident set highlighted by the ˝ turn to a pike Jaeger release and the transition to a straight  handstand position on the low bar. Full turn to double tuck dismount, stuck the landing.
Team Total 48.800
Balance Beam Score Post Meet Commentary on Skills Executed and Deductions
1 Cassie Martin 9.275 Cassie lost significant bonus from her opening move, the very difficult switch ring leap (major wobble, just saved from falling).  Solid front aerial and the bhs to layout step-out.  Her switch leap to double stag was tentative and may not have garnered full credit either.  Slight shuffle on the landing of the full twist out of a bhs.  Consistency is the goal now.
2 Ashley O'Neal 9.750 Except for the punch front being a tad low in amplitude, we thought this was her best effort of the season, especially the flight series (bhs to layout step-out).  Solid double front (tuck) dismount, one small step to balance the landing.
3 Mari-Christine Bayer 9.700 Form problem on the layout step-out element of her flight series to open (bent knee was obvious during flight).  Nice switch leap ˝ turn and a front aerial to scale.
4 Erin Rightley 9.725 Wobbles observed after the front aerial and the landing of the layout step-out element in her flight series.  Better landing of the dismount this week: bhs to gainer full twist.
5 Terin Humphrey 9.825 What a difference a week makes: she hit the big skills without a problem, including the full-twisting back handspring to bhs to layout step-out and a rock solid punch front.  Judges keep hitting her on the dismount, a gainer full twist, which needs to be upgraded soon in relation to her mount (E element, triple turn in lunge position).
6 Brittany Magee 9.875 Slight balance check on the layout step-out only, rest of routine was rock solid, smooth, flowing.  She threw her best dismount of the season as well (round off to double tuck).
EX Ashley Miles Overall she threw a pretty solid routine but fell on the wolf full.  She was very happy to hit the double twist dismount and also nailed the opening mount: round off layout step-out.
EX Melanie Banville Showing more confidence in recent weeks on beam: split jump full turn; bhs to layout step-out (very nice); switch leap to straddle had a balance check on second element; nice double twist dismount, excellent landing.
Team Total 48.875
Floor Exercise Score Post Meet Commentary on Skills Executed and Deductions
1 Erin Rightley 9.775 Opening tumbling passes were rock solid (double pike and the front-front full-front layout) but she bounced back a bit on the landing of the Rudi (front through to a 1 ˝) opening the door for the judges to deduct accordingly.
2 Ashley O'Neal 9.800 Excellent showmanship and terrific control this week on the landings of all three tumbling passes: double tuck, double pike, front-front full twist-front layout.
3 Terin Humphrey 9.625 Step back on the double front Arabian to open and a small hop on the landing of the 2˝ twist to punch front.  Rock solid third pass of the double pike.  She was hit hardest for the second week in a row for not connecting a leap out of the cat leap full (start value automatically deducted 2 tenths).
4 Brittany Magee 9.675 She had an awesome routine going until the final pass, where she knee-buckled the landing of the front handspring to a double full and had to step forward with the other foot to balance this move.  We thought the deduction was too harsh given the rest of the routine’s difficulty and superb execution of both tumbling and dance elements. ˝ in ˝ out to open was landed chest high as was the whip-whip-bhs-double pike.
5 Melanie Banville 9.800 Full in pike to open, nice control on the landing but could have been a little higher in the air; second pass was a front-front full twist to punch layout this week, executed very well; finished with a strong double pike.  Triple turn, fell out just a bit on the final spin but still impressive.
6 Ashley Miles 9.900 Slight step forward on the landing of the double layout to open, tiny hop on the landing of the front-front full to front layout (2nd pass), but perfect control and landing of the double pike to close.
EX Kaitlin White 9.700 Much better control this week with her opening pass of the double pike and the second pass was landed on a dime (punch layout to a Rudi).  A little less control observed on the final pass, whip ˝ to front full but she stood it up.  Very nice showmanship as well throughout this routine.
