We'll say goodnight from Gainesville, where the Tide drops a heartbreaker [ 8:11 PM, 01/19/07 ]

to the Gators. Bama returns to Coleman Coliseum next week for Pink Meet night against the Auburn Tigers. Let's have a sell-out and remember you have a chance to win a 2007 Toyota Camry if your number is one of six lucky ones drawn from the admission tickets. Roll Tide!

[ top... ]
Coach Sarah Patterson had some strong words on the radio for her team's [ 8:07 PM, 01/19/07 ]

deflation at the end of this meet on beam. She stated she is not afraid to mix up the line-up to get better results and leadership where needed. So it looks like beam intra-squads are in the mix for Sunday's practice. Here's hoping the team responds well to whatever intervention she chooses to implement.

[ top... ]
So the Tide returns tonight to Tuscaloosa and will have some time to [ 7:57 PM, 01/19/07 ]

reflect on what might have been. The Tide had this victory in hand, with three very solid beam routines in the bank and needing just two clutch beam performances from senior Erin Rightley and junior All American Terin Humphrey after freshman Ricki Lebegern fell on her front aerial. But they did not deliver. We cannot sugarcoat this and it is what it is, to quote Wayne Huezienga.

Now, the Tide definitely saw improvement on the bars this week, hitting six of six routines with a shift of the line-up (Martin to third as we predicted last week, White to the lead-off position); the Tide's vaulting was much improved after just one week as well, and while floor was not as crisp they still scored a 49.250 and put themselves well in position to capitalize on the beam.

Final Team Scores [ 7:56 PM, 01/19/07 ]

Alabama: 195.650
Florida: 196.825

All Around [ 7:54 PM, 01/19/07 ]

3rd Terin Humphrey of UA
2nd Amanda Castillo of UF
1st Kassi Price of UA

[ top... ]
Dennis and Castillo tie for second on the vault, Reed wins it for UF [ 7:50 PM, 01/19/07 ]

Bars are won by Hartung, Castillo and Humphrey of UA (9.900)

Beam - 3rd Place: Magee of UA and Sinclair of UF, Price of UA gets 2nd; Hartung wins it with a 9.925

Floor: Gators sweep this week places 1 through 3. Reed of UF wins it with a 9.925

[ top... ]
Florida receives a 49.525 on the floor and wins going away, counting no [ 7:45 PM, 01/19/07 ]

lower than a 9.90. The judges were not as picky the second time around but the Gators hit the big skills, so they deserve the victory. Bama finishes with a 195.65 to the Gators 196.825. Scores are unofficial.

[ top... ]
Nice exhibition routine from Casey Overton just then. [ 7:44 PM, 01/19/07 ]

Terin receives a 9.275 for her beam and Erin Rightley a 9.025. So the Tide counts two falls on the beam tonight, basically hands the meet to the Gators with the final three beam routines. Lessons begin immediately no doubt from Coach Patterson.

[ top... ]
Terin is up on the beam and through her flight series. [ 7:40 PM, 01/19/07 ]

She falls on the punch front. Switch leap to wolf leap; finishes the rest of her routine without a major mishap. This routine will count as well. Bama needs to start digging deep to find that grit and determination to fight through tough moments like these.

[ top... ]
Lebegern receives a 9.2 for her beam routine and Erin Rightley falls so the [ 7:36 PM, 01/19/07 ]

Tide is unfortunately giving it away here at the end. They will have to count a fall on the beam. Castillo receives a 9.90 for her floor routine. Hartung opens with a triple; follows with a front through to a double full; finishes with a 2 1/2 twist; very nice.

[ top... ]
Evans of UF gets a 9.90 on floor and Reed follows her with a 9.925 [ 7:31 PM, 01/19/07 ]

and O'Neal a 9.825 for her beam. Lebegern is doing fine so far until the front aerial and falls; Castillo opens with a pike full in on floor, control bounce back on the landing but she keeps it in bounds; follows with a double tuck, bounces back again; finishes with a solid double pike.

[ top... ]
Price gets the big score of a 9.875 for her difficulty and tenacity with that [ 7:30 PM, 01/19/07 ]

last routine. O'Neal is through her flight series but hesitates on the switch leap and has a balance check again on the full turn; she is looking a little tentative; regains her composure with a solid front tuck punch and ends with a super double front dismount, one step forward.

[ top... ]
Rue receives a 9.825 and Evans opens on the thick mat with her first [ 7:28 PM, 01/19/07 ]

tumbling pass, a double front, follows with front tumbling, ends with a full twist out of it; Celtic music; ends with a double tuck; crowd loves her.

[ top... ]
Magee starts Bama off with a 9.85 score. Price is now on the beam [ 7:27 PM, 01/19/07 ]

and through her wolf front aerial to scissor jump, switch leap to side split leap combination. BHS to layout step-out, slight shoulder shift. Full turn to wolf leap combination; side Somi, nice, dismounts with a double pike, lands it very well, just slightly steps back after appearing to nail it at first. Way to go!

[ top... ]
Rue is up first on the floor for the Gators. [ 7:25 PM, 01/19/07 ]

She opens with a tuck full in, step back on the landing but she stays in bounds. Front, front full to front layout, a little off center and sluggish on that landing (neck was back). She finishes with a double pike, slight shift in place on the landing. Solid routine. Crowd is back in it for the Gators.

[ top... ]
Magee is through her flight series and the front aerial, switch leap to pike [ 7:23 PM, 01/19/07 ]

jump, front punch, perfect so far, dismounts with a round off to a almost stuck 1 1/2 twist. Great start!

[ top... ]
Brittany Magee is up first for the Tide on the balance beam. [ 7:19 PM, 01/19/07 ]

We need the Texas sophomore to start us off solid, hopefully paving the way for six great routines. Let's go Bama!

[ top... ]
Bama has a 147.625 running score after three rotations to the Gators' 147.30 [ 7:16 PM, 01/19/07 ]

[ top... ]
Gators had a fall on beam from Reed (9.2) and Castillo got a 9.725 to close [ 7:15 PM, 01/19/07 ]

out. They have a final team score on beam of 49.150 to Bama's 49.250 on the floor. Price finished with a 9.875.

[ top... ]
Kassi Price goes last for the Tide this week on the floor. [ 7:12 PM, 01/19/07 ]

She nails the opening pass this week of the pike full in, much better form in the air and her landing was stuck. She changes the second pass for a front tuck through to a double pike this week and will close with a round off to a double pike, another strong landing.

[ top... ]
Morgan Dennis just hit all three passes, but the second one was slightly [ 7:10 PM, 01/19/07 ]

altered by her in flight, a front-front full to front tuck instead of her usual front layout. She closes with a perfect double tuck, high and the landing was great too. But again, judge on our left hits Bama the hardest, giving her a final score of 9.825.

[ top... ]
Terin throws two E passes and a D to close, but receives a 9.85 from one [ 7:07 PM, 01/19/07 ]

judge, who has scored the Tide the lowest in the first four routines up. The other judge sees it as a 9.90, final tally of 9.875. What does the girl have to do?

[ top... ]
Terin nails her opening double front Arabian [ 7:06 PM, 01/19/07 ]

and the 2 1/2 twist to punch front; she finishes with a double pike and just drills it! Big hug for Bryan Raschilla at the end. Wow!

[ top... ]
Erin receives a 9.85 on floor. [ 7:04 PM, 01/19/07 ]

Hartung completes a very strong routine on the beam, ending with what looked like a 1.5 twist.

[ top... ]
Sinclair gets a 9.85, she stuck the double pike dismount. Her routine had [ 7:04 PM, 01/19/07 ]

nice difficulty but several slight but noticeable bobbles here and there.

[ top... ]
Erin Rightley opens with a double pike; beautiful height and landing. [ 7:01 PM, 01/19/07 ]

second pass is a little tricky but she nails it, the Rudi to layout step-out. Finishes with another strong front-front full-front layout.

[ top... ]
Lebegern gets rewarded for the higher difficulty with a 9.825. [ 7:01 PM, 01/19/07 ]

[ top... ]
Rue gets a 9.825 for her beam [ 6:57 PM, 01/19/07 ]

and O'Neal gets a final score of 9.75. Ricki opens with another super triple twist, follows with another nailed double pike. She closes with a front-front full to front pike, just keeps it in bounds. Another 9.825 score for King of UF.

[ top... ]
O'Neal opens with a front through to a double tuck [ 6:55 PM, 01/19/07 ]

with a little balancing step back; front-front full-front layout, very nice; smiling throughout; she ends with a double pike, nails the landing. The crowd is appreciative of her selling of this routine. Good way to open for the Tide O!

[ top... ]
Rue hits the flight series of bhs to layout stepout, gainer layout step-out [ 6:53 PM, 01/19/07 ]

later, side Somi, 1/4 jump/turn to hip drop down on the beam, gainer full dismount.

[ top... ]
Katie Rue is up first on the balance beam for the Gators [ 6:52 PM, 01/19/07 ]

Ashley O'Neal will be up first on floor for the Tide.

[ top... ]
Alabama increases their lead over the Gators with a 49.225 on the vault to [ 6:45 PM, 01/19/07 ]

the Gators' 49.050 on uneven bars, running score of 98.125 for UF, 98.375 for the Tide

[ top... ]
Sinclair receives a 8.775 for her bars. [ 6:43 PM, 01/19/07 ]

White just threw an exhibition vault of a Yurchenko 1/1 for what looks like a 9.675 score.

[ top... ]
Price receives 9.85 for her vault. [ 6:42 PM, 01/19/07 ]

Sinclair misses her mount and sails over the low bar. She also misses the Hindorff. So that will be a sub-9.00 scored routine for sure. Corey Hartung received a 9.90 for her routine and they will finish on this event with a 49.050.

[ top... ]
Terin receives a 9.85 for her vault. [ 6:40 PM, 01/19/07 ]

Kassi Price throws the most difficult vault of the night, a Yurchenko 1 1/2 and takes one step to the side to balance the landing. She won the bronze medalist on vault at the USA Nationals this past August.

[ top... ]
Dennis gets a 9.875 for her huge vault, one step back on the landing. [ 6:39 PM, 01/19/07 ]

Terin just hit the Omeliantchik, small hop on the landing. Lutz got a 9.725 for a rough bars set, Castillo a 9.900 for two major releases.

[ top... ]
Willis gets a 9.75, Reed a 9.775 on bars. [ 6:37 PM, 01/19/07 ]

Magee sticks her vault and gets a 9.85. Okay.

[ top... ]
Magee just nailed her Yurchenko 1/1 and you can tell by how quiet the [ 6:36 PM, 01/19/07 ]

crowd got suddenly. Except for the mouthy kid right behind us who keeps shouting how much he hates Alabama.

[ top... ]
Lebegern earns a 9.80 for her vault and O'Neal throws the pike 1/2 [ 6:35 PM, 01/19/07 ]

but has split in the air and has to take a balancing step on the landing. Huge vault in the air and she gets a 9.800.

Reed hops back towards the bars on her double layout landing off the bars. Otherwise a solid routine.

[ top... ]
Lebegern throws a strong Y 1/1, small hop back on the landing. [ 6:33 PM, 01/19/07 ]

Willis hits her bars routine and lands a very nice double layout.

[ top... ]
Ricki Lebegern will start the Tide off on the vault this week. [ 6:31 PM, 01/19/07 ]

She'll throw the Y 1/1 again this week but has the 1 1/2 coming soon to a coliseum near you.

[ top... ]
Three minute touch is going on for Bama on the vault [ 6:28 PM, 01/19/07 ]

We need stuck landings!

[ top... ]
Alabama goes six for six like we were hoping for and leads by .075. [ 6:26 PM, 01/19/07 ]

The Tide is a better vaulting team than the Gators with more variety as well but they must try and stick the landings to get the maximum score possible. Florida has scored quite high on the uneven bars in their opening two meets and will look to surge past the Tide if they can hit the big skills.

[ top... ]
Price received a 9.85 and Terin Humphrey hit her routine for a 9.90 but was [ 6:25 PM, 01/19/07 ]

deducted only for a hop on the landing of her double layout dismount. Beautiful handstands and the hop full to Gienger was awesome. Morgan Dennis received a 9.825 for her bars routine.

[ top... ]
Price is up for the Tide on the bars. [ 6:22 PM, 01/19/07 ]

Kassi hits her big Hindorff and the double layout dismount (one small hop forward, chest down a bit as well). Bama is five for five so far.

Castillo gets a 9.875 for her vault. This vault was piked down and she hopped forward towards the vault. Ashley Reed hits a 9.90 with a much better vault in the air and on the landing.

[ top... ]
Willis received a 9.70 for her vault [ 6:21 PM, 01/19/07 ]

[ top... ]
Zaiser received a 8.850 for her vault, the first number up was changed. [ 6:20 PM, 01/19/07 ]

Rue received a 9.80 for her Y 1/1. Lebegern received a 9.75 for her bars and Martin a 9.825 for hers. Morgan Dennis just hit her routine, tiny step also on the double front dismount.

[ top... ]
Martin hits her bars routine, tiny step on the double tuck dismount. [ 6:19 PM, 01/19/07 ]

[ top... ]
Cassie Martin in up next for the Tide on the uneven bars. [ 6:18 PM, 01/19/07 ]

Rue completes a Yurchenko 1/1, pikes it down, small hop back, limited distance as well.

[ top... ]
White gets a 9.725 for her bars, King a 9.8 for her vault and Zaiser 9.1 for [ 6:18 PM, 01/19/07 ]

her vault.

[ top... ]
Zaiser blows her vault (does a simple tuck over the table) so they will hope [ 6:16 PM, 01/19/07 ]

to throw that one out. Ricki Lebegern completes her bars routine successfully, which included a straddle Jaeger and a stuck dismount of a full in! Much better than last week.

[ top... ]
Breanne King vaults first for the Gators [ 6:14 PM, 01/19/07 ]

with a Yurchenko 1/1 that she lands very well to start her team off. Kaitlin is up for the Tide. Nice Gienger to pak Salto combination, full turn to double tuck is a little labored at the end and she has to take one step forward on the landing but she has us one safe routine in the house!

[ top... ]
Three minute touch is now over and the Tide will start the uneven bars [ 6:13 PM, 01/19/07 ]

with Kaitlin White. Let's have a clean six in a row Bama!

[ top... ]
Fashion Report! [ 6:06 PM, 01/19/07 ]

Florida is wearing a solid metallic orange leo with silver sequins.

Alabama is wearing a shiny, deep crimson leo with a sharp contrasting white swirling wave that wraps from front to back with silver sequins edging the neckline and white cuffs contrasting at the elbows.

[ top... ]
Gators are high-fiving like Tim Tebow was in the house. [ 5:58 PM, 01/19/07 ]

Gator-chopping is rampant in the stands now that they have won a football title this past year along with a basketball title. Will the gym team make it their first and in the same calendar year?

[ top... ]
Keys to victory: [ 5:42 PM, 01/19/07 ]

For the Gators they will need to get their home crowd into the meet immediately with strong vaulting. The Florida coaches hope this will fuel the team as they head to their top event so far this season, the uneven bars. Once there, if they perform like they have the past two weeks, then they should start to coast. But anything can happen and if the Gators miscue on bars and later on beam, the Tide will have a chance to put the pressure on them with their two strongest events, vault and floor exercise.

For Alabama, the Tide is looking for improvement this week on the uneven bars, where they have high quality routines but not much depth now with the loss of freshman Jac Shealy last week to an ACL injury. The Tide will need to hit at least five of six routines on the bars to pump up their performances on the vault and hopefully fuel them through another strong set on the floor exercise, where they are number one in the nation.

Perhaps the major key to victory in this series, is the home crowd. And while certainly the O'Connell Center crowd tonight is not near as large as what the Tide is used to in Tuscaloosa, they will be very vocal for the Gators, and that is usually worth several tenths in the final scoring. Best of luck to both teams and here's hoping we come out of here with all gymnasts healthy.

[ top... ]
One final switch leap to a pike jump from Brittany Magee and the Tide is [ 5:38 PM, 01/19/07 ]

ready to have a final pep talk with the coaches before heading to the locker room.

[ top... ]
Five minutes left in this final warm-up and then we'll be getting ready to [ 5:37 PM, 01/19/07 ]

for the meet to start.

[ top... ]
Bama is very focused right now on the beam, warming up very well. [ 5:32 PM, 01/19/07 ]

Nice routine rep by Casey Overton and a beautiful wolf front aerial from Kassi.

[ top... ]
Warming up on balance beam is Brittany, Ashley, Kassi, Terin, Ricki, Erin [ 5:26 PM, 01/19/07 ]

Casey and Amanda.

[ top... ]
Casey Overton is going through her floor routine (dance through) but we [ 5:22 PM, 01/19/07 ]

don't know if she will actually exhibit it tonight. The Tide rotates now to the balance beam for the final 15 minute warm-up.

[ top... ]
Erin Rightley is looking pretty good with the double pike and the Rudi to [ 5:22 PM, 01/19/07 ]

layout step-out.

[ top... ]
Sarah is chatting with Kassi Price, who had a sloppy triple just then. [ 5:16 PM, 01/19/07 ]

A good number of Tide fans are in the house, and vocal ones at that!

[ top... ]
Nice double pike by Ricki just then and one from Casey Overton! We are [ 5:13 PM, 01/19/07 ]

so glad to see her out there on vault and now floor. Will beam and bars be far behind?

Double layout from Morgan had tremendous airtime and she just kept it in bounds.

[ top... ]
Kaitlin White likes the floor, as does Terin. Morgan and Kassi are struggling [ 5:11 PM, 01/19/07 ]

a bit with it.

[ top... ]
Bama moves to the floor exercise, UF to the balance beam for the next [ 5:08 PM, 01/19/07 ]

15 minute long warm-up. On the floor for the Tide: Erin, Kaitlin, Casey(!), Kassi, Terin, Ashley O, Morgan, Ricki. This is a bouncy floor!

[ top... ]
A stuck Yurchenko 1/1 just then from sophomore Brittany Magee! [ 5:06 PM, 01/19/07 ]

Magee will possibly exhibit uneven bars tonight, as she looked very solid in the 15 minute warm-up earlier. She now throws a Tkatchev release and a pak Salto and dismounts with a 1/2 in 1/2 out.

[ top... ]
We are in Gainesville, Florida for the second meet of the Tide's 2007 season [ 5:02 PM, 01/19/07 ]

in gymnastics. It's #1 (UF) versus #4 (UA) and both teams are working through their respective 15 minute long warm-ups on vault (Alabama) and uneven bars (Florida). Alabama will insert Cassie Martin tonight in the third position on the bars and Kaitlin White will open the meet for the Tide tonight on this event. As the host team, UF will start on vault.

Right now we see the following Tide gymansts vaulting: Kassi, Casey, Morgan, Ricki, Brittany, Terin, Ashley O, and Kaitlin. Two stuck Yurchenko 1/1 vaults in a row from freshman Ricki Lebegern.
