We will sign off from Stegeman Coliseum, where the Bulldogs hit a 198 team
[ 5:21 PM, 02/10/07 ]
and season high for the 2007 year to Alabama's 196.05. Bama will be on the road next week in Arkansas and will try again to get that higher road score they will need in about four weeks as we move to RQS for post-season qualification. Roll Tide fans, see you back in Tuscaloosa in two weeks for the North Carolina meet and join us here next Friday night on the radio and Gymtide.com for up to date coverage of the Tide.
[ top... ]
Coach noted that the team has great skills but several again are going through
[ 5:19 PM, 02/10/07 ]
growing pains and she warned of this earlier before the season even started. So she has confidence the nerves or whatever it is will be worked out. That's good enough for us!
[ top... ]
Freshman Ricki Lebegern was the Tide's highest scoring all arounder,
[ 5:02 PM, 02/10/07 ]
finishing with a 39.350. She is being interviewed right now by the radio team. Ashley O'Neal is up next, as she hit three great scores too, a 9.825 on vault, a 9.85 on floor and a 9.85 on balance beam (lead off this week in lieu of Brittany Magee, who was having trouble in reps).
[ top... ]
Georgia finishes with a 49.625 on floor and a 198 even score.
[ 4:52 PM, 02/10/07 ]
While Georgia was terrific today, the judging was a little loose on floor and beam and in certain spots vault for BOTH teams. Alabama missed out again on hitting a solid road score. Kudos to the Dawgs for what looked like a post-season performance and it's back into the gym for more "beam" self-analysis for the Gymtide this next week.
Not sure what the coaches are going to say to the gymnasts this week. They had no pressure on them after floor and the last three gymnasts were set up beautifully by O'Neal, Overton and Lebegern. Dennis may not be ready for prime time on this event and Price had her first mishap of the year, so she is cut some slack. As far as Terin, we have no explanation. Coach reports that they had another exceptional week of practice this past week on this event and maybe the spark that was missing in the audience today affected their performance a bit. Anchor position may have to be revisited for this event at least in the next few weeks.
[ top... ]
Meanwhile Georgia is getting nothing but 9.90 or higher scores with the
[ 4:51 PM, 02/10/07 ]
exception of Kupets (C) (9.85) and Stack (9.875), as Tolnay hits the 9.950.
[ top... ]
Terin opens with a full twisting bhs and then stops and throws a bhs to
[ 4:48 PM, 02/10/07 ]
layout stepout. She falls on the punch front (touches the beam and then has to step off). Rest of the routine looks good, she dismounts with a perfect landing of the 1 1/2. So we will count the 9.375 from Humphrey and the 9.350 from Price. The Tide finishes with a 196.05.
[ top... ]
Courtney Kupets opens with a double front Arabian, two hops on the landing
[ 4:46 PM, 02/10/07 ]
and jams the second pass, stumbling to the side a bit, finishes with a double pike.
[ top... ]
Kassi Price is through her front wolf aerial to scissor leap, switch leap to
[ 4:44 PM, 02/10/07 ]
side straddle combination, bhs to layout stepout, falls on the second element, so the Tide will have to count a fall again this week. Wolf jump, side Somi, very nice; she dismounts with a double pike, one step on the landing. She has been so consistent this year, maybe the nerves got to her a bit here in Stegeman for the first time.
[ top... ]
McCool gets the 9.95 score.
[ 4:42 PM, 02/10/07 ]
Dennis receives a 9.325 for her beam score and Price is up next.
[ top... ]
Lebegern gets a 9.85 and Dennis is through her front aerial but again
[ 4:40 PM, 02/10/07 ]
throws two layouts and just comes off on the final layout element (had no room to go). Switch leap to tuck full, switch leap to scissor leap, round off to double tuck, sticks the landing! Nice recovery.
[ top... ]
Taylor gets a 9.95 and McCool opens with a 2 1/2 to punch layout, very
[ 4:39 PM, 02/10/07 ]
nice control on that landing. She follows with a double twist, double turn with leg extended (almost looked like a 2 1/2). Ends with a front through to a double full, very impressive difficulty and presentation.
[ top... ]
Overton hits the 9.875! Let's keep building it Bama!
[ 4:37 PM, 02/10/07 ]
Ricki Lebegern is now up, throws a beautiful bhs to layout step-out. Switch leap to straddle-straddle combination, she maintains composure throughout and hits the side straddle leap, side Somi, very nice, ends with a ro to double twist, sticks the landing.
[ top... ]
Stack gets a 9.875 for her floor and Taylor opens with a double pike
[ 4:36 PM, 02/10/07 ]
and follows with a beautiful double tuck, very tight in the air and on landing. She finishes with a 2 1/2 twist, very nice.
[ top... ]
O'Neal receives a 9.85 for her beam set and freshman Casey Overton is up
[ 4:33 PM, 02/10/07 ]
next for the Tide. Come on Virginia gal, make it two weeks in a row! Front aerial is solid, switch leap to straddle-straddle looks good, as does the bhs to layout stepout, full turn to sheep jump, side straddle leap, bhs to gainer full twist, stuck the dismount. Confidence!
[ top... ]
Abby Stack is up first for Georgia on floor to Pink Panther music
[ 4:31 PM, 02/10/07 ]
She opens with a pike full in and pushes the envelope on the borderline white stripe, almost stepping over, having to balance check, follows with a double twist to punch front, and ends with a double pike, nice.
[ top... ]
Ashley O'Neal is up first for the Tide on beam. Opens with a bhs to layout
[ 4:27 PM, 02/10/07 ]
stepout, slight balance check only. Switch leap to straddle-straddle combo, nice, full turn, punch front, perfect! She dismounts with the incredibly difficult double front, tiny hop on the landing. Yahoo!
[ top... ]
Bama finishes on floor with a team total of 49.325 and a running total of
[ 4:24 PM, 02/10/07 ]
147.750. Georgia is at 148.375 after hitting an incredible 49.500 on beam (Heenan a 9.90 and C Kupets a 9.925).
[ top... ]
Dennis gets a 9.925, again the judges appreciate the difficulty and reward
[ 4:19 PM, 02/10/07 ]
her accordingly. Overton is now up for her exhibition on floor. She opens with a beautiful double pike. Our freshmen are doing exceptionally well here today. She throws a double tuck in her second pass, stumbles forward a bit on the landing, chest down so this will be a deduction. She finishes with a round off to whip 1/2 to whip full, bends at the waist to stand up the last element and avoids sitting it down. Once she is in peak condition on floor, this routine will be much better. Overton also has more difficulty in her arsenal, including a pike full in, triple twist, and a 2 1/2 to punch layout, so we have much to look forward to next year.
[ top... ]
Morgan opens with a soaring double layout, then a front layout to front
[ 4:17 PM, 02/10/07 ]
full twist to front tuck, and finishes with a double tuck. Excellent height again on that final pass but she really needs to open up with that beautiful smile and sell it much more confidently the next time.
[ top... ]
Kaitlin White received a 9.75 for her routine so hopefully we can throw out
[ 4:16 PM, 02/10/07 ]
this lower score if the final two gymnasts hit their routines and garner the higher scores. Terin Humphrey receives a 9.875, rewarded for two E passes and a D.
[ top... ]
Terin Humphrey nails the opening double front Arabian, just beautiful!
[ 4:14 PM, 02/10/07 ]
Second pass is the 1 1/2 to 2 1/2, a little stumble out of the second element but what incredible difficulty on back to back passes. She closes with a double pike - beautiful landing, double turn to finish into a Homma flip and salute to the judges. Very nice except for the jam on the 2 1/2 landing in her second pass.
[ top... ]
McCool gets a 9.850 and C Kupets is through her flight series, no problem
[ 4:12 PM, 02/10/07 ]
but she had a slight shoulder balance shift on the front aerial, side 1/4 straddle jump; switch leap to layout stepout, bhs to bhs to stuck double tuck. Awesome! Incredible confidence, one gymnast after the other.
[ top... ]
Lebegern receives a 9.875 and White is up with her routine on floor.
[ 4:11 PM, 02/10/07 ]
She opens with a front punch layout to a Rudi (1 1/2 twist), follows with a double pike - lunges forward on the landing but stands it up, so this will be a deduction. Nice dance and presentation and she will close with a ro to bhs to whip 1/2 to whip full, just stays in bounds.
[ top... ]
McCool is up with a front handspring layout onto the beam, bhs to layout
[ 4:09 PM, 02/10/07 ]
stepout flight series; scissor leap to sheep jump combination, very nice; front aerial, double twist dismount, one hop to the left. No other deductions obvious except a little wobble on an earlier leap element.
[ top... ]
Not sure about Rightley's score (9.800). We'll double check later to see if we
[ 4:07 PM, 02/10/07 ]
missed anything. Ah yes, she did the Rudi but not the bonus connection (immediate layout stepout out of it). Lebegern opens with a triple, jams the landing just a bit to pull it around. She follows with a new second pass, the front-front full to front pike and will close with more difficult tumbling, the double pike this week - perfect landing!
[ top... ]
Childs receives a 9.875 for her beam routine. Tolnay opens with a split side
[ 4:06 PM, 02/10/07 ]
jump, very nice flexibility, bhs to layout stepout, this team is just not going to miss today. Punch front, full turn switch leap to straddle jump, bhs to bhs to double tuck and she stuck the landing (whoo, a little close to the end of that beam.). She receives a well-deserved 9.95.
[ top... ]
O'Neal opens with a 9.85 for the Tide. Scoring is going to be loose on floor.
[ 4:04 PM, 02/10/07 ]
Gorgeous opening double pike from Erin Rightley, really terrific height and controlled landing (no steps), followed by a Rudi; no problems so far. Really selling it well - she will finish with a front-front full to front layout - very nice.
[ top... ]
Taylor gets a 9.85 on beam and Childs is now on, bhs to layout stepout, very
[ 4:03 PM, 02/10/07 ]
confident. Ring leap, moon walk, double stag, gainer back pike dismount. Solid.
[ top... ]
Ashley O'Neal opens for the Tide on floor. Sell it O!!!
[ 4:01 PM, 02/10/07 ]
Nice opening pass of a front tuck through to RO to BHS to double tuck. Second pass is right on, front-front full to front layout. Straddle full to wolf full combination and she finishes with a double pike, step back on the landing but no problems standing it up. Nice start in hostile territory!
[ top... ]
Tiny Grace Taylor is up first for the Gymdawgs on beam and is doing a
[ 3:58 PM, 02/10/07 ]
terrific job so far. She is very confident on this event, throwing a front aerial and a bhs to back pike flight series, a bhs to bhs to double twist dismount.
[ top... ]
Nice Hristakieva vault exhibition from Casey Overton, small hop forward.
[ 3:51 PM, 02/10/07 ]
She receives a 9.75 - hmmmm.
Bama scored a 49.300 on the vault and after two rotations has a 98.425 and UGA is at 98.875. The Tide will need to hit their floor routines to put any sort of pressure on the Dawgs while they are on beam. Coaches are looking for in bounds tumbling and great presentation. This will prepare the team well for the post-season.
[ top... ]
Morgan Dennis hops back on the Y 1/1, but gets great height and distance
[ 3:50 PM, 02/10/07 ]
and she receives a 9.925. Meanwhile Kupets (C) hits the 10 on bars.
[ top... ]
Tolnay receives a 9.775 for her bars routine after hopping forward on the
[ 3:49 PM, 02/10/07 ]
double front dismount.
[ top... ]
Terin Humphrey throws the Omeliantchik with a small hop forward this
[ 3:47 PM, 02/10/07 ]
week, well controlled for a 9.875. Very nice form in the air as well.
[ top... ]
Kassi Price stands up her Y 1/1 very well, hop in place for a 9.825, a little
[ 3:46 PM, 02/10/07 ]
bent forward on the landing as well.
[ top... ]
Childs gets a 9.85 for her bars, Newby a 9.800 for a sluggish dismount
[ 3:45 PM, 02/10/07 ]
landing (low, step to the left with right foot, bent down). Nice Tkatchev and toe off straddle release to the high bar.
[ top... ]
Lebegern receives a 9.875 despite getting better distance
[ 3:42 PM, 02/10/07 ]
and sticking her Y 1/1. That's what we've become used to in the wacky world of college gymnastics. White follows with a Y 1/1, one step on the landing almost in place (a little jammed) for a 9.800. O'Neal stands up her pike 1/2 twist but has leg split and one step back on the landing. for a 9.825. Very powerful explosion off the vault table.
[ top... ]
Lebegern starts us off with a stuck Y 1/1, great distance, a little bend
[ 3:42 PM, 02/10/07 ]
forward on the landing.
Childs is through a 1 1/2 to a Gienger to a pak Salto and dismounts with a full turn to double tuck, nails the landing.
[ top... ]
First rotation: Alabama: 49.100 and UGA 49.400
[ 3:37 PM, 02/10/07 ]
If the Tide can stick those vault landings, they can make up some ground.
[ top... ]
Terin Humphrey also hits all of her elements, one bunny hop on the
[ 3:33 PM, 02/10/07 ]
dismount and receives a conservative 9.85. Cannot explain this score given the higher difficulty overall compared to Martin's, which was beautiful in itself but a hop full to Gienger is not only very difficult but unique. No one else in the country performs this combination element and Terin did not have a major miss of a handstand this week.
[ top... ]
Kassi Price receives a 9.825, form was heavily deducted this week apparently
[ 3:31 PM, 02/10/07 ]
because she hit all the major elements without a snag, including the toe on toe off 1/2 and 1/1 and the Hindorff, one small step on the double layout.
[ top... ]
Dennis nails her routine, including the pike Jaeger and a double tuck front
[ 3:29 PM, 02/10/07 ]
dismount. Courtney Kupets gets a 9.800 despite major pop up and outward on the landing of her Omeliantchik. Dennis receives a 9.775 for her bars due to just lightly brushing her heels on the lower mat during transition apparently.
[ top... ]
Lebegern receives a 9.75, mainly due to missing some handstands. Cassie
[ 3:27 PM, 02/10/07 ]
Martin follows with a truly beautiful routine, sticking her dismount and including all elements this week (toe on toe off to Tkatchev to pak Salto). Heenan hits the Y 1/1 with great form and stretch, gaining a 9.95. Martin receives a conservative 9.85.
[ top... ]
White gets a 9.800 for her bars routine and Lebegern completes her fancy
[ 3:25 PM, 02/10/07 ]
full and 1/2 pirouetting before going into the straddle Jaeger, nails the full in dismount. Ashley Kupets takes a large step forward on her Omeliantchik and gets deducted accordingly, ending with a 9.85.
[ top... ]
Kaitlin White completes her routine with a full turn to Gienger (slight leg
[ 3:23 PM, 02/10/07 ]
separation on second element) and one step on the double tuck dismount. Dowlen gets a 9.825 for her vault and Newby stands up the Hristakieva vault with a hop forward. Amazing that she got over so smoothly as she had bent arms on the vault table (repulsion back). The judges liked it regardless for a 9.90.
[ top... ]
Here we go!
[ 3:19 PM, 02/10/07 ]
First up on vault is Megan Dowlen for the Gymdawgs and she vaults a Y 1/1. She stands it up but takes a step back on her left side. Was slightly off center as well.
[ top... ]
The crowd is filling in nicely but there are still many empty seats and this is
[ 3:18 PM, 02/10/07 ]
likely due to the baseball game that was taking place over the past two hours.

Fashion Report!
[ 3:15 PM, 02/10/07 ]
Alabama is dressed in deep burgundy with the silver wave etched in sequins on the front.
Georgia is dressed in shiny silver, black and red, the diagonal red metallic swatch occurring on the front and back, heavily etched with sequins as well.
[ top... ]
As we predicted, Magee will be scratched from the beam as well as the vault

Keys to victory:
[ 2:35 PM, 02/10/07 ]
For Georgia, they will try and set the tone immediately on vault, traditionally their strength and hope that Alabama falters on bars and has to dig themselves out of a hole early. If the Dawgs then go on to hit their bars and beam routines, then they expect to name their score on floor with the home crowd behind them. This team has so much quality depth, that even replacing one routine is not going to affect their scoring potential on any event. And it looks like with the exception of senior Ericksen on bars, that the Gymdawgs are healthy across the board for today's meet.
For Alabama, the coaches and veteran gymnasts who were here back in 2005 for the upset of the Gymdawgs will cue the new Tide stars to relax, have fun and perform their best for the Bama fans in attendance. Hopefully this will translate into a top road score for the Crimson Tide and if they secure another victory in the process, all the better.
[ top... ]
The teams are now ready to retire to the dressing rooms and prepare for the
[ 2:33 PM, 02/10/07 ]
march out. Will UGA VI show his snout tonight?
[ top... ]
Nice two layout flight series from Morgan and a switch leap to tuck full.
[ 2:23 PM, 02/10/07 ]
She will dismount with a double tuck, as will Terin, while Kassi will dismount with a double pike.
Magee has been scratched from vault, as her reps were not looking as crisp as the coaches wanted on the final runs. She is also struggling on beam with her flight series and may be pulled from that event as well. Sometimes the timing is just not right on a particular day and rather than risk an injury it makes sense to move someone else into the line-up who is hitting.
[ top... ]
Balance beam competitors for the Tide will be Terin, Kassi, Morgan, Casey,
[ 2:21 PM, 02/10/07 ]
Ricki, Brittany and Ashley O'Neal.
[ top... ]
The Tide moves to the balance beam for their final 15 minute warmup while
[ 2:15 PM, 02/10/07 ]
Georgia will finish on the floor exercise. Heenan, Stack, Taylor, Tolnay, Kupets, McCool and A Kupets are warming up.
[ top... ]
Erin Rightley looks like her foot is fine as she goes through her leap series
[ 2:14 PM, 02/10/07 ]
on the floor. Three minutes left in the long warm-up.
[ top... ]
Grace Taylor throws a one arm bhs to back pike as her flight series.
[ 2:10 PM, 02/10/07 ]
Morgan Dennis may add the tuck full in for her final pass on floor. Just practiced throwing it during the 15 minute warm-up and she has incredible height on this element.
[ top... ]
The plan for today here in Stegeman is to break down the bars and vault
[ 2:08 PM, 02/10/07 ]
at the halfway point, move the apparatus pieces out of the gym and then recommence the meet. This is because the media area is now set up behind the bars, beam and vault and we are unable to have an uninterrupted view of the floor until they remove the bars, which is now in the middle of the coliseum floor between vault on our left and beam on our right. So prepare for about a 10 minute intermission after Bama finishes the vault rotation.
[ top... ]
O'Neal will open on floor again this week and will have several family
[ 2:03 PM, 02/10/07 ]
members and friends in attendance to cheer her on. She competed for the Georgia Academy of Gymnastics in Atlanta during her club days. Bama is very fortunate to have her on the team, as she lights up the floor and always competes with intensity, whether it's vault, floor or the ever challenging beam.
[ top... ]
The Tide will throw four Y 1/1 vaults, one Omeliantchik, a pike 1/2, and
[ 1:58 PM, 02/10/07 ]
one Hristakieva. All start from a 10.
Bama finishes up on the vault and now moves to the floor exercise.
[ top... ]
On bars Georgia will showcase Tolnay, Heenan, Childs, Taylor, Newby,
[ 1:55 PM, 02/10/07 ]
C Kupets, and Stack.
[ top... ]
Terin gets great height on the Omeliantchik vault but must nail that landing.
[ 1:51 PM, 02/10/07 ]
-Price will do bars, vault and beam today and sit out floor.
-Erin Rightley will return to floor this week but will sit out beam.
-Overton gets the nod on beam for the second week in a row.
-Vault will see Magee move into the third spot and Lebegern will lead off this week.
The coaches are mixing the line-up again to continue building depth.

Bama on vault: looks like Ashley O, who returns to her home state for

Bama is getting extra support from the Tide fans behind us, which includes
[ 1:38 PM, 02/10/07 ]
Kassi Price's parents. Dad is very vocal and leading the cheer charge here, getting the ladies to respond in kind with "Roll Tide!" . Bama finishes early on the bars and prepares to move to the vault. Georgia will throw one Hristakieva vault (Newby), several Y 1/1 vaults (Heenan, Dowlen, Burns) and an Omeliantchik (A Kupets) as well as possibly a 1 1/2 from Tolnay (crashed first attempt and replaced with a Y 1/1 after in the most recent rep).
