Post Meet Commentary: Alabama Crimson Tide vs Florida Gators (Friday, January 19, 2007)

[Postmeet]
The Alabama Crimson Tide lost a heartbreaker
to the Florida Gators
in Gainesville this past Friday Night. Leading after each of the first
three rotations, Bama had the meet under control until the fourth routine on their
final event, balance beam.
After freshman Ricki Lebegern fell during her execution of a front aerial, it was up to senior Erin Rightley and junior Terin Humphrey to close the wound, but the suture was not strong enough to stop the bleeding. Several positives can still be taken from the meet, including freshman Kassi Price's winning the all around (39.450) in front of her former Orlando Metro coaches and teammates, several of
whom now compete for the rival Gators. Talk about pressure! And Terin Humphrey won the uneven bars (9.90) and hit her floor (9.875) and vault (9.875) routines with sparkling confidence. BTW, Terin's uncharacteristic fall on the balance beam was only the second time in three years at Alabama, so no need to push the panic button, Tide fans. Terin can do punch fronts in her sleep and Erin has clearly earned her position on the beam with consistent workouts in the
gym and during hotly contested meets last year, like SECs and Regionals. But what Coach Patterson emphasized during her post-meet interview cannot be ignored: this was indeed a perfect early opportunity to demonstrate upper class leadership for the rest of the team in an adverse situation and that opportunity was not seized. No doubt these situations will be present in the immediate future and everyone on the team must be prepared to meet similar challenges or it could be a
disappointing and unfulfilled season. We feel confident that both Erin and Terin, as well as the rest of the team, will gain much from this experience as they prepare to meet the challenges ahead, which start Friday night in Coleman Coliseum against in-state rival Auburn. Now, here are some post-meet commentary notes.
