Post Meet Commentary: Alabama Crimson Tide Grabs "Power of Pink" Victory Over the Auburn Tigers (Friday, January 26, 2007)
[MeetCentral] [Scores]
[PlayByPlay] [Postmeet]

The Alabama Crimson Tide and the Auburn Tigers duked it out again in Coleman Coliseum this past Friday Night before a sell-out crowd of 15, 076.  It was a record-setting performance for the Tide as a team this year (197.475) and the program's highest score since 2004.  Along the way, Bama saw three outstanding all-around performances from freshmen Kassi Price (39.575) and Morgan Dennis (39.525), along with junior Terin Humphrey (39.550).  Career marks were set also by Tide sophomore Cassie Martin on the uneven bars (9.925) and junior Kaitlin White on the bars (9.875) and floor exercise (9.825).  The coaches were particularly pleased to see how well the entire team responded in practice following the loss at Florida and the results showed clearly on the balance beam this week, as the Tide hit a 49.100 team score.  Indeed, impressive confidence was displayed by first-time balance beam competitor Morgan Dennis (9.750), who was up next after sophomore teammate Ashley O'Neal encountered problems during her preceding routine (9.625).  Dennis threw difficult skills under pressure yet kept the Tide rolling on this event, setting up Price and Humphrey beautifully to close out with equally solid routines.  This is exactly how the coaches hoped the team would respond in the meet and it looks like the lessons learned in Gainesville are already paying dividends.   Here are more highlights to share...

1 Brittany Magee 9.825 Maintained beautiful form throughout the Y1/1 and stuck the landing chest high.  The lower score could be explained by limited distance from the vault and the fact that she was first up.
2 Ashley O'Neal 9.800 Pike 1/2 twist had great  height and distance, better form (legs not as loose mid-air), one step on the landing.
3 Ricki Lebegern 9.850 Gained great height and distance despite petite figure; almost a perfect stick of the Y1/1.
4 Terin Humphrey 9.825 Omeliantchik had better form mid-air this week and landing was more controlled (bunny hop). Arguably could have been scored higher.
5 Kassi Price 9.925 Booming Y1/1 this week instead of the 1.5 and the result was a stuck vault.  Form improving.
6 Morgan Dennis 9.950 Had the best distance, height, form throughout her Y1/1; great vault.

(2nd and 3rd Rotation [2.8 MB])
1 Kaitlin White 9.875 Simply her best bars routine ever at UA!  The Gienger release had legs stuck together throughout and the timing of the pak Salto was just right.  Final full turn to a stuck double tuck dismount,  landed chest high was the icing on the cake.
2 Ricki Lebegern 9.750 She was a little nervous during the first uprise giant and started to do multiple giant 1/2 and 1/1 elements before finally getting the 1/2 turn to front giant set up to throw the straddle Jaeger; finished with a stuck full in dismount, a little bent forward on the landing though.  Feet need to stick together at the ankles too for maximized scoring.
3 Cassie Martin 9.925 Cassie nailed the toe-on toe-off to Tkatchev to pak Salto combination but changed the routine a bit near the end, nevertheless hitting her pirouettes and handstands beautifully enroute to a stuck double tuck dismount.  Beautiful form and toe-point throughout.
4 Morgan Dennis 9.850 Likely deducted on a few of her giant uprises that just missed perfect vertical positions on top of the high bar; the pike Jaeger release was huge in the air and she stuck the double front dismount, both revolutions above the high bar.  Her first competitive bars routine at home.
5 Kassi Price 9.925 Her rhythm and pacing of this routine were noticeably better this week, especially with the tough elements of the toe-on toe-off 1/2 turn to Hindorff and the toe-on toe-off 1/1; gaining confidence every week with the double layout dismount, better distance and form, one step on landing.
6 Terin Humphrey 9.900 Breathtaking routine marred only by the bunny hop on the dismount (argh!).  Her extra effort to hit the handstands right on top of the high and low bars and the hop full to Gienger combination were top-notch.

(2nd and 3rd Rotation [2.8 MB])
1 Brittany Magee 9.825 Small step back on the layout-stepout (flight series: one-arm bhs to layout stepout); everything else was super, almost stuck the 1 1/2 twist dismount.
2 Erin Rightley 9.850 Much more confident routine this week, slightest shoulder break on the front aerial was the only obvious deduction.  BHS to layout step-out, switch leap-switch leap to straddle; switch leap to pike jump; bhs to gainer full twist, stuck the dismount.
3 Ashley O'Neal 9.625 Encountered two problems: the layout step-out element had a break at the waist and she  over-rotated the dismount (super difficult double front tuck) and lunged forward with a huge step but she fortunately was able to avoid a fall with super strength and effort on that leg.  The rest of the routine (punch front and switch leap to straddle-straddle combination) was fine.
4 Morgan Dennis 9.750 Her first competitive routine for the Tide on this event; very nice front aerial; bhs to layout step-out to layout step-out had slight shoulder bend on final element; nice switch leap to tuck full jump; double tuck dismount, one step back on the landing.  Given the difficulty and overall execution, we thought this routine was a little underscored.
5 Kassi Price 9.800 A little balance check on the wolf front aerial to scissor jump and the leap series (switch leap to 1/4 straddle jump) needed more amplitude and leg split; nice side Somi and the double pike dismount was solid, one small step to check the landing.
6 Terin Humphrey 9.875 Great routine, full twisting bhs to bhs to layout step-out; punch front (landed high this week on her toes), switch leap to wolf,  1/4 bhs to split handstand position,  and a 1 1/2 twisting dismount, small bunny hop.  This routine deserved a higher score too.

(4th Rotation thru Postmeet [2.9 MB])
1 Ashley O'Neal 9.350 First pass just went out of bounds with one foot back (bhs to double tuck), second pass was fine, front-front full to front layout, but she uncharacteristically touched down on the closing double pike.  She just lacked enough push on the final bhs to carry her completely around to a successful landing.
2 Kaitlin White 9.825 Kaitlin backs up O with her best routine on floor, opening with a soaring double pike (stuck landing); second pass was a difficult front punch layout to immediate Rudi (1 1/2 twist), landed the second element chest down a bit, requiring a balancing step forward; finished with a round off to whip 1/2 to front full; she sold this routine very well.  Her career high on this event.
3 Erin Rightley 9.850 Hit all three tumbling passes: double pike, Rudi to layout step-out; front-front full to front tuck (timing was perfect on the third element); would likely score higher if she had laid out the final element of her third pass but considering how well she finished, we're not complaining.
4 Terin Humphrey 9.950 This is the score Terin should have received last week at Florida.  Opened with a double front Arabian, second pass of a 2 1/2 twist to punch front, closed with a perfect double pike, legs together on the landing, no step required to balance.  The crowd loved her presentation and big smile throughout, as well as the sassy dancing.
5 Kassi Price 9.925 Super charged routine with tons of dancing; hit the tumbling passes well, saw some minor checks on landing of two that she danced out of quickly.   Pike full in to open; tuck through to RO BHS to double pike, finished with a RO BHS to double pike.  Amazing, deceptive power.
6 Morgan Dennis 9.975 Great control on the opening double layout, and on the second pass of the front-front full to front layout; the ending double tuck was so high, another well-controlled landing too; two dance sequences are noticeably repetitive and really need to be changed for this routine to get the 10 score down the road.   She is selling the routine better each week.
