Post Meet Commentary: Alabama GymTide Tames Kentucky Wildcats (Friday, February 2, 2007)
(Alabama: 196.375; Kentucky: 193.625)

[PlayByPlay] [Postmeet]

The Alabama Crimson Tide kept to their winning ways this week against SEC foe Kentucky in Coleman Coliseum.  Bama was able to rest a few gymnasts on certain events that allowed the coaches to build some vital depth for post-season.  Freshman Casey Overton demonstrated her composure on vault, balance beam and floor exercise while exeucting some very difficult skills along the way.  Junior Kaitlin White hit all three of her routines as she continued to lead by example, while junior Terin Humphrey ran away with the all around title, hitting four of four herself, highlighted by a terrific floor set (9.925).  Let's review some of the highlights....

Ricki Lebegern: Floor Exercise: 9.900
"Super opening triple twist, followed by a double pike, ended with a stuck front-front full to front pike. Excellent presentation but the dance elements seemed off from the music at the end of her second pass and again at the beginning of her final tumbling pass."

9.850 Strong Y1/1 with the slightest shift of her feet on the landing.  Great form but the rotation was a little slow in the air.
2 Kaitlin White

9.775 Excellent distance and height gained with this Y 1/1, one step back on the landing.  Stingy score.
3 Terin Humphrey
View the video for vault: Terin Humphrey: 9.750 (HIGH Bandwidth) View the video for vault: Terin Humphrey: 9.750 (Normal Bandwidth)
9.750 Omeliantchik was deducted heavily for a big lunge forward on the landing despite excellent form and height/distance.

9.875 Really stuck this Y 1/1 well, with excellent distance and height off the table.  Arguably deserved a higher score.

9.825 Y 1/1 also had excellent form and control in the air; one step back on the landing.
6 Morgan Dennis

9.875 Nice control, height and distance on the Y 1/1, mainly deducted for a hop back on the landing.

9.775 Impressive Hristakieva vault (Yurchenko 1/2 twist off - front layout), a little body arch noticed, otherwise a pretty well-controlled landing, small hop.

9.775 Missed first handstand, ankle split on final giant 1/1 but kept going and stuck the double tuck chest high.  Excellent form on the Gienger release.
2 Ricki Lebegern
View the video for bars: Ricki Lebegern: 9.800 (HIGH Bandwidth) View the video for bars: Ricki Lebegern: 9.800 (Normal Bandwidth)
9.800 She was more relaxed this week and really paced this routine well.  Deducted for a little overarch on the initial kip cast to handstand but stayed focused and hit the giant 1/1 to giant 1/2 to another 1/2 turn to front giant to straddle Jaeger release, super full in dismount, stuck the landing.  She was very pleased with the results.
3 Cassie Martin
View the video for bars: Cassie Martin: 9.800 (HIGH Bandwidth) View the video for bars: Cassie Martin: 9.800 (Normal Bandwidth)
9.800 Nice handstands, starting with a kip to HS on the high bar mount, 1/2 turn giant to another 1/2 turn to Tkatchev to pak Salto; finished with a giant 1/2 to front giant straddle uprise to another 1/2  turn to immediate double tuck, one step on the landing.  Left out the toe-on toe-off this week, which usually occurs at the beginning of her routine.
4 Morgan Dennis
View the video for bars: Morgan Dennis: 9.800 (HIGH Bandwidth) View the video for bars: Morgan Dennis: 9.800 (Normal Bandwidth)
9.800 Better effort on the opening kip to handstand, followed by a 1/2 turn to front giant to a very nice pike Jaeger; stuck the double front dismount, a little cowboy form noted.  If she can hit those handstands consistently, this will be a high-scoring routine.
5 Kassi Price

9.900 Tons of difficulty rewarded by the judges; form was not quite as good as last week on the toe-on toe-off 1/2 and 1/1 but the Hindorff release looked sharp; nice double layout, small hop back on landing.
6 Terin Humphrey
View the video for bars: Terin Humphrey: 9.875 (HIGH Bandwidth) View the video for bars: Terin Humphrey: 9.875 (Normal Bandwidth)
9.875 Another difficult routine (hop full to Gienger release!) that would have scored higher except for a few handstands not being right on top of the high bar; double layout dismount also had a small hop back.

1 Brittany Magee
View the video for beam: Brittany Magee: 9.825 (HIGH Bandwidth) View the video for beam: Brittany Magee: 9.825 (Normal Bandwidth)
9.825 Solid routine with no major deductions: one arm bhs to layout stepout; front aerial; switch leap to pike jump; 1 1/4 turn; front punch; round off to 1 1/2 twist, slight step forward of one foot on landing.
2 Erin Rightley
View the video for beam: Erin Rightley: 9.275 (HIGH Bandwidth) View the video for beam: Erin Rightley: 9.275 (Normal Bandwidth)
9.275 A little wobble on the front aerial and she just barely missed staying on with the bhs to layout step-out flight series (second element).  Very nice switch leap-switch leap-straddle combo and the switch leap to pike jump later in this routine had wonderful amplitude and lightness of landing. Stuck the bhs to gainer full twist off the side, so despite the fall Erin showed much better compusure and recovery to maximize her scoring with the rest of the routine's elements.  This would later pay dividends for the team when Morgan came off during her flight series.
3 Casey Overton
View the video for beam: Casey Overton: 9.750 (HIGH Bandwidth) View the video for beam: Casey Overton: 9.750 (Normal Bandwidth)
9.750 Good leadership displayed by the freshman in her debut routine on beam for the home crowd.   Following Erin's mishap, Casey looked amazingly confident in executing her skills and did not hesitate until a leap combination near the end of her routine, which likely was the primary deduction given by the judges.  Front aerial to a perfect bhs to layout stepout, full turn, switch 1/4 turn straddle leap, switch leap to sheep jump (this is where the slight hesitation occurred, possibly resulting in her not getting full bonus for connection); ring leap (head needed to be extended a little further back to get maximum credit); dismounted with a bhs to gainer full twist, stuck it!  Her teammates were ecstatic for her.
4 Morgan Dennis
View the video for beam: Morgan Dennis: 9.175 (HIGH Bandwidth) View the video for beam: Morgan Dennis: 9.175 (Normal Bandwidth)
9.175 Morgan struggled in warm-ups (3 minute touch) and during the routine when she opened with the front aerial (bend to the waist on her right side); this may have made her a little nervous with her flight series (bhs to layout step-out to layout step-out), just missed the stick on the third element and having to hop off; switch leap to tuck full combination looked solid; full turn, switch leap to scissor jump was confident; dismounted with a round off to double tuck, one step on the landing.  Good recovery too with the latter elements.
5 Kassi Price
View the video for beam: Kassi Price: 9.875 (HIGH Bandwidth) View the video for beam: Kassi Price: 9.875 (Normal Bandwidth)
9.875 More leadership demonstrated by a freshman!  Kassi stepped right up and hit all of her elements with confidence, no nervousness visible.  Wolf front aerial to scissor jump was no problem this week; switch leap to straddle 1/4 jump (a little more extension and amplitude needed); bhs to layout step-out flight series, solid; full turn to wolf jump; side Somi, round off to double pike, stuck the landing but legs were a little apart.
6 Terin Humphrey
View the video for beam: Terin Humphrey: 9.875 (HIGH Bandwidth) View the video for beam: Terin Humphrey: 9.875 (Normal Bandwidth)
9.875 Excellent, polished routine, with added difficulty this week of the round off to bhs to double tuck dismount, one step back on the landing.  Omeliantchik and Kotchetkova elements were executed very well, nice punch front and switch leap to wolf had much better amplitude this week as well.  The fans really appreciated the more difficult dismount and showed it with hearty applause.
EX Ricki Lebegern
View the video for beam: Ricki Lebegern: (Exhibition: 9.825) (HIGH Bandwidth) View the video for beam: Ricki Lebegern: (Exhibition: 9.825) (Normal Bandwidth)
9.825 This routine was well-paced, confident, no bobbles.  BHS to layout step-out, switch leap to straddle-straddle jump series was very nice; switch side leap; full turn, side Somi (perfect) and a round off to double twist, slight shift on landing only.  Very nice.

9.800 Tuck through to RO to double tuck, one large step back but in bounds and landed chest high; front-front full to front layout, very nice control in the air and on landing, body lines were tight; ended with a double pike, slightly down and forward on the landing but she stood it up well.
2 Casey Overton
View the video for floor: Casey Overton: 9.650 (HIGH Bandwidth) View the video for floor: Casey Overton: 9.650 (Normal Bandwidth)
9.650 Beautiful opening double pike, excellent height and well-controlled landing; double twist for her second pass; ended with a round off to whip 1/2 to whip full twist.  Also included a cat leap full, split leap to straddle full to straddle 1/2 series.  Not sure where the harsh deductions came from other than the start value being at a 9.90 for the second and third tumbling passes not being "up to the level" of competition?  Coach Patterson mentioned Monday Night on "Hey Coach!" that Casey had practiced a more difficult second pass that would get her routine up to a 10 start value for the Georgia meet.
3 Kaitlin White
View the video for floor: Kaitlin White: 9.825 (HIGH Bandwidth) View the video for floor: Kaitlin White: 9.825 (Normal Bandwidth)
9.825 This was her best executed routine in terms of tumbling and dance presentation.  We thought the score should have been higher.  Opened with a super double pike, nailed the landing, followed with a punch front layout to immediate 1 1/2 (Rudi), landed with no problems this week; ended with a round off to whip 1/2 to whip full twist, well controlled.
4 Ricki Lebegern
View the video for floor: Ricki Lebegern: 9.900 (HIGH Bandwidth) View the video for floor: Ricki Lebegern: 9.900 (Normal Bandwidth)
9.900 Super opening triple twist, followed by a double pike, ended with a stuck front-front full to front pike.  Excellent presentation but the dance elements seemed off from the music at the end of her second pass and again at the beginning of her final tumbling pass.
5 Terin Humphrey
View the video for floor: Terin Humphrey: 9.925 (HIGH Bandwidth) View the video for floor: Terin Humphrey: 9.925 (Normal Bandwidth)
9.925 Opened with a sky-high double front Arabian, no problems on the landing; followed with the very difficult 1 1/2 to a 2 1/2 twist, slightly pounced the landing in place of the second element but kept moving; finished with a terrific double pike, moved immediately into a double turn and Homma flip and then a salute to the judge.  It's great to see Terin's enthusiasm for this routine with music that she can show her personality and impish humor through; we love it and so does the Bama Nation.
6 Morgan Dennis
View the video for floor: Morgan Dennis: 9.950 (HIGH Bandwidth) View the video for floor: Morgan Dennis: 9.950 (Normal Bandwidth)
9.950 Effortless double layout to open, front-front full-front layout to follow (not quite as smooth as previous meets), finished with another booming double tuck.  We still would like to see a fresher dance sequence near the end of the routine since she already has this series at the beginning following her opening tumbling pass.  Morgan is selling this routine much better after the first month of competition, especially at the beginning, but still needs to work on her eye contact with the crowd.
EX Cassie Martin
View the video for floor: Cassie Martin: (Exhibition: 9.575) (HIGH Bandwidth) View the video for floor: Cassie Martin: (Exhibition: 9.575) (Normal Bandwidth)
9.575 Opened with a 2 1/2 twist, lunged forward a little on the landing but stood it up; followed with a double twist, nice form and height; finished with a front layout to front layout to front full twist, final element was jammed a bit on landing and off to the right but well in bounds.  Start value was not up to a 10 with the second and third passes.  No obvious problems noted with the leaps (cat leap double, switch leap to switch leap full turn combination) or dance/interpretation.  Maybe the judges don't like Esteban's version of  The Godfather?
