Post Meet Commentary: Crimson Tide Boots Tarheels Back to Chapel Hill (Friday, February 23, 2007)
[MeetCentral] [Scores]
[PlayByPlay] [Postmeet]

The Alabama Crimson Tide grabbed control from the opening two events and never relinquished its lead over the baby blue of North Carolina despite having to count a fall on the balance beam (Brittany Magee 9.275) in the final team total.  The Tide went 22 of 24 routines for the night, including three routines of 9.90 or higher on the uneven bars (Cassie Martin, Terin Humphrey and Kassi Price), two on the floor exercise (Humphrey and Morgan Dennis) and one on vault (Humphrey). Junior Terin Humphrey won the all-around with a career high of 39.575 with freshman Ricki Lebegern coming in for the third consecutive week at 39.350..  Simply too much great gymnastics for a poor soul to handle!   To the highlights we go...

(Premeet thru 1st Rotation [3.7 MB])
1 Ricki Lebegern 9.875 Super solid start, her Y 1/1 had excellent form throughout the twisting and was landed chest high with the smallest shuffle in place.
2 Kaitlin White 9.800 Hop back on the landing of the Y 1/1 but had nice distance from the table and good form throughout.
3 Kassi Price 9.850 Form was better with her Y 1/1 this week but distance from the table needs to increase for maximum scoring.
4 Brittany Magee 9.850 Her Y 1/1 is getting better each week.  A little more height and stretch in the air and we'll start to see the higher scores come in.
5 Terin Humphrey 9.900 Wonderful execution of the Omeliantchik this week (Yurchenko 1/2 on - front pike off) with the slightest hop on the landing.
6 Morgan Dennis 9.850 Terrific distance on the Y 1/1 but she took a step back on the landing and the judges whacked her.

(2nd and 3rd Rotation [3.3 MB])
1 Kaitlin White 9.800 Another solid Geinger release (legs together, good height and form) and pak Salto transition to the low bar.  Full turn to double tuck dismount was landed chest high and without a step for the second week in a row.
2 Ricki Lebegern 9.825 Pirouetting and handstands looked good, better extension on the straddle Jaeger release, stuck the full in dismount with a shoulder/arm shift to maintain the chest high landing.
3 Cassie Martin 9.900 Super toe-on toe-off to Tkatchev to pak Salto series; great stretch, toe-point, and rhythm throughout, stuck the double tuck dismount as well.
4 Morgan Dennis 9.825 Her high-flying, effortless pike Jaeger is the highlight of this routine each week.  Double front dismount had a little knee bend and a slight foot check on the landing.  Handstands were not perfect but close.
5 Kassi Price 9.950 Really went for the handstands this week on top of the bar and stuck the double layout dismount.  Her key pirouetting and release elements were well-centered (toe-on toe-off 1/2 and 1 /1 as well as the Hindorff and toe-off straddle transition to the high bar).  Rhythm throughout was first rate.
6 Terin Humphrey 9.925 New release move series: toe-on toe-off 1/2 turn to front giant to Khorkina release; hop full at the end to giant-giant to double layout dismount (hop back on landing cost her).

(2nd and 3rd Rotation [3.3 MB])
1 Ashley O'Neal 9.800 Slight balance check on the flight series (bhs to layout stepout); nice switch leap to straddle-straddle combo; very solid punch front, one step forward on the double front (tuck) dismount.
2 Casey Overton 9.850 Small hop on the landing of the dismount (bhs to gainer full twist) and the only other noticeable balance check was during the first element, front aerial (slight foot and shoulder check); rest of routine flowed well, no checks: bhs to layout step-out, switch leap to straddle-straddle combination; switch side leap, full turn to sheep jump.
3 Ricki Lebegern 9.775 Small balance checks on the flight series (bhs to layout stepout) and the switch leap (stopped before then throwing a straddle-straddle jump series).  Nice front aerial, side Somi and stuck the double twist dismount.
4 Terin Humphrey 9.825 Kotchetkova (full twisting bhs) well-executed again this week as a single element, which she gets credit for but does not obtain bonus when not connected to the flight series (bhs to layout-stepout); switch leap to wolf (could use a little more split and amplitude); Omeliantchik showed excellent control; round off to bhs to double tuck dismount, one step back.  Has removed the punch front from her routine for now.
5 Brittany Magee 9.275 Grabbed the beam to stay on after bending over upon landing the one-arm bhs to layout stepout flight series; front aerial, full turn - leg extended looked solid; switch leap to pike jump, terrific amplitude and extension; very nice punch front; dismounted with a round off to 1 1/2 twist, perfect stick.  Excellent recovery to get as many points as possible after the break.
6 Kassi Price 8.800 After opening with two solid elements (front aerial onto the beam, wolf front aerial to scissor jump) she fell on the flight series (bhs to layout stepout, second element) and the side Somi; switch leap to split 1/4 jump was a little tentative; full turn to wolf jump looked good; dismounted with a round off to double pike, foot shift on landing.

(4th Rotation thru Postmeet [2.9 MB])
1 Erin Rightley 9.825 Great form and height once again with the opening double pike; super solid front handspring to 1 1/2 twist (Rudi) to a layout stepout; slightly popped up and forward on the landing of the front handspring-front full to front layout (third pass), but stayed well in bounds.  One leap series (wolf full second element) was a little sloppy and not executed all the way around.
2 Kaitlin White 9.825 In terms of hitting her tumbling passes, this was Kaitlin's best routine of the year and her score simply does not reflect that fact.  Opened with a beautiful double pike, landed feet together, followed by a round off to whip 1/2 (twist) to front full twist, another solid landing; finished with a front punch layout to immediate Rudi (1 1/2 twist), excellent execution and landing as well.
3 Ricki Lebegern 9.875 Triple full, front-front full twist to front pike, beautiful double pike to close out.  The lack of dance continuity right before she moves into the final tumbling pass (waiting for the music to shift) was more noticeable and her final salute on the floor seems to be off with the music as well.  Not sure if the judges can hear that final beat when she throws her last salute.  This could have affected the judges' scoring of this routine because it was a pretty solid effort with regard to tumbling and leaps.
4 Ashley O'Neal 9.650 Large step back on the double pike to open, very nice second pass of the front-front full to front layout; increased her difficulty on the final pass this week with a front tuck through to a round off to bhs to double tuck (landed chest down and knee bent forward, large step to check her balance).  New dance moves throughout make this a more sophisticated routine for O and once the combination tumbling skills are mastered, this should score higher.
5 Terin Humphrey 9.925 Well-controlled double front Arabian to open, almost a perfect second tumbling pass of the very difficult 1 1/2 twist to a 2 1/2 twist; new dance elements were incorporated since the first and second passes are almost back to back now. Finished with another solid double pike.  The deductions may have come on some of the leaps needing greater amplitude and toe point/extension.
6 Morgan Dennis 9.925 Opening double layout looked great, just a little tentative on the second pass of front-front full to front layout but her rhythm was not interrupted significantly; finished with more difficulty this week, a front tuck through to a round off to bhs to super high double tuck, great landing.  Off the music just a wee bit at the end with her final dance salute.
