Bama: 196.300 Kentucky: 193.525
[ 8:15 PM, 01/25/08 ]
We'll see you back in Coleman Coliseum next Friday night as the GymTide goes against their top rival, the Georgia Bulldogs. Goodnight Tide fans from Memorial Coliseum in Lexington, Kentucky.

Terin Humphrey is being interviewed now for the Crimson Tide
[ 8:11 PM, 01/25/08 ]
after winning the uneven bars with a 9.90. She notes (with a chuckle to the radio crew) that she IS indeed getting older and needs more rest to get her through the rest of the season. Hopes to compete more as soon as possible. Morgan Dennis will be interviewed next - a great all around performance for her tonight. Really improving on the uneven bars, trying to get all of those handstands and now sticking the dismount more. We also saw a better vault from her this week but with different judges they still scored it the same as last week's at Auburn at a 9.85. Her floor music this year is her choice and she noted that she likes the style better and that's why she is selling it to the crowd with consistent smiles right here at the beginning of the season.

[ 8:10 PM, 01/25/08 ]
announcement.
Kentucky gets two scores increased and finishes with a 193.525 to Bama's 196.300
Bama swept three events and tied for the title on the floor and won the all around. Bama fans are yelling Roll Tide Roll!

Coach Patterson is being interviewed by the radio crew and noted that
[ 7:55 PM, 01/25/08 ]
Brittany Magee was removed from the beam line-up due to swelling of her ankle resuming during the 3 minute touch warm-up, so they replaced her with O'Neal. Again, Bama has their greatest depth on this event and despite some tentative moments by a few of the gymnasts, they got through it and brought home another solid opening month road score. So the Tide started strong and finished strongly enough for this week.
[ top... ]
Bama finishes with a 49.00 even on balance beam and a team total of
[ 7:52 PM, 01/25/08 ]
196.300. Kentucky finishes on floor with a 49.100 and a final team score of 193.525.
[ top... ]
Heather Hite receives a 9.90 (?) despite bounding forward out of her second
[ 7:51 PM, 01/25/08 ]
pass and taking a large step back on her opening double pike. Ferguson is now finishing up with dynamic music - some trouble on her second tumbling pass but she finishes with a strong double tuck and the team is thrilled for her. She receives a 9.850.
[ top... ]
Morgan Dennis will anchor the beam for the first time for the Tide.
[ 7:48 PM, 01/25/08 ]
Front aerial to flutter jump - bhs to layout to layout - perfect! switch leap to wolf jump and then she throws a tuck full jump - switch side straddle jump - just stays on - nails the double tuck dismount. She's our show-stopper tonight. Did not leave out the difficulty. She receives a 9.850.
[ top... ]
Lebegern receives a 9.875 for her beam set.
[ 7:46 PM, 01/25/08 ]
Kassi Price nails the front aerial and the flight series of bhs to layout step-out; switch leap to wolf has nice amplitude - 1 1/4 turn -slightly bends forward at the waist but controls it - wolf front aerial to flutter jump - nice - sticks the double pike dismount like the trooper she is! They deduct her for the full turn balance check - 9.750.
[ top... ]
Snowden lands first pass on a mat with two steps forward (front twisting)
[ 7:44 PM, 01/25/08 ]
pretty dance - double twist second pass - finishes with 2 1/2 to punch front, legs bent all the way through, stumbles out of it on the mat and to the side of it, so this will be deducted possibly more than Mitchell's routine of 9.675. No, they score her a little higher with a 9.700. Snowden had trouble on the first and final passes but the leap and dance elements were impressive.
[ top... ]
Ricki Lebegern is through her flight series and leap series - looking good
[ 7:42 PM, 01/25/08 ]
so far, side straddle jump - full turn - side Somi - nice - dismounts with a stuck double twist, one leg slightly bent to hold the landing. Four for four but we need the scores to keep going up so we can throw out the 9.600.
[ top... ]
Andrea Mitchell on floor now for the 'Cats
[ 7:40 PM, 01/25/08 ]
Opens with a double pike (mat), nice landing - round off to whip 1/2 to front full to front pike - closes with a double tuck, lands it chest down, legs split, has to lunge forward to stand it up. Nice dance and funky presentation.
[ top... ]
Ashley O'Neal is now up for Bama on beam -
[ 7:39 PM, 01/25/08 ]
her 3 minute touch was impressive and the coaches want to hold out Brittany Magee, who is nursing a mild ankle sprain from earlier this week - opens with a flight series of bhs to layout step-out - nice - switch leap to two straddle jumps - full turn - solid punch front tuck - dismounts with a running front full twist, small hop on landing but a huge smile accompanying it. 9.775 score for her first routine on beam since last year.
[ top... ]
Overton received a 9.600 for her beam and Rymer of KY a 9.825 on floor.
[ 7:37 PM, 01/25/08 ]
So Bama really needs to pick it up and not let them get back into it. Green on floor opens with a double pike, step back to balance, 2 1/2 to follow - nice dance, wolf full jump - dynamic presentation with music - finishes with a whip 1/2 to whip full (?), nice finish. 9.825.
[ top... ]
Rymer completes a solid floor routine to get the 'Cats confidence back
[ 7:34 PM, 01/25/08 ]
Amanda Montgomery is now up for the Tide - nice full turn - front walk over to side aerial - slight balance check on the landing of the second element - split jump full - slight check as well - front aerial - solid - switch leap to tuck full - one arm bhs - wolf full - another slight balance check on the landing - running front full twist, slight step in place - 9.75. whoosh! That's the most nervous I've seen Amanda on the beam - pressure pressure but she handled it well.
[ top... ]
Casey Overton is up for the Tide on beam.
[ 7:31 PM, 01/25/08 ]
Front aerial - break at the waist with one foot lifted up - switch leap to straddle-straddle looks good - flight series is solid as well - bhs to layout step-out - switch side straddle after a sheep jump - sticks the bhs to gainer full twist. She will be hit hard on that opening skill mishap and will lose immediate bonus, so her start value will come down as well. This was not what we needed to see happen. She is usually so strong and yet seems to still be dwelling a bit on that floor mishap earlier. Coach Patterson will use this for the future bigger meets - you have to put the previous rotation behind and prepare to perform for the next.
[ top... ]
The announcer was a little confused, thought Rymer was going first on floor
[ 7:30 PM, 01/25/08 ]
but Mo motions for him to focus on the beam, where Casey Overton will start this final rotation off when she gets the judge's signal. Sarah Patterson is changing the beam line-up a bit and making sure both judges have her final list. On beam judging this week: Kathy Feldmann and Vicki Smith. Terri Cooper and Mary Lou Dillard are judging floor. Earlier on vault Cooper and Feldmann judged and Dillard and Smith on bars.
[ top... ]
Casey Overton has a chance to redeem her performance on the floor in a big
[ 7:29 PM, 01/25/08 ]
way by hitting her balance beam routine like she did last week. She has been very steady on this event for the Tide and has been placed in the lead-off position since her freshman season.
[ top... ]
The Tide needs to really pick things up on the balance beam to get out of
[ 7:24 PM, 01/25/08 ]
here with another solid road score. But more importantly, go six for six to finish strong and meet your road goal for the second week in a row. Kentucky is strongest on floor and they will definitely want to make up for the problems they encountered on the balance beam, so Bama must stay hungry and confident.
[ top... ]
Morgan Dennis finishes for the Tide with a 9.90 on floor and Bama has a
[ 7:22 PM, 01/25/08 ]
team total on this event of 48.950, having to count Ashley O'Neal's 9.625 after Casey Overton was charged with a fall out of her leap series during her routine (9.175) - her score was thrown out. Bama has a 147.300 running total to Kentucky's 144.425. Kentucky got an increase most likely on the vault where Mo protested one of the scores apparently and got it increased by one tenth.
[ top... ]
Heather Hite receives a 9.525 for her beam routine.
[ 7:21 PM, 01/25/08 ]
Kentucky has a 47.35 on balance beam as a team, running score of 144.325
[ top... ]
Morgan Dennis opens with a huge double layout - no problems with the
[ 7:19 PM, 01/25/08 ]
boundary to our right - second pass of a double tuck, very nice landing - cat leap double - boogie time - smiling all the way - switch split full to split full combination - perfect landing on her final pass of the tuck through to round off to bhs to double tuck. Yowza!
[ top... ]
Green receives a 9.75 for her beam routine and Heather Hite will finish
[ 7:17 PM, 01/25/08 ]
this event for the 'Cats. Nice scale position mount - flight series of a bhs to bhs to layout step-out - nice followed by a hitch kick to side straddle jump - front aerial, bend at the shoulder with arms waving to balance - straddle to wolf jump full, bend at the waist to hold on - dismounts off the side of the beam with a gainer full, bends forward to stick the landing, going for every point.
[ top... ]
Kassi Price receives a 9.825
[ 7:15 PM, 01/25/08 ]
Kaitlin White is now up on floor and opens with the E pass - front punch layout through to a front double full - second pass of a double pike -just a little buckle at the knees on landing it, one step forward to control it - nice dance before her final pass - she finishes with a Rudi (1 1/2) - finishes with straddle-straddle, full turn down onto the floor and a salute to the judge.
[ top... ]
Snowden of KY has a 8.800 on beam, Mitchell a 9.350 (too many checks and
[ 7:14 PM, 01/25/08 ]
the very low landing of the double tuck dismount cost her huge). Emily Green is now up and doing a good job - switch leap to gainer back layout stepout - sheep jump - balance check - split jump to flutter - dismounts with a stuck 1 1/2 twist but legs show major separation on the landing.
[ top... ]
Ricki Lebegern receives a 9.825 and that helps tremendously.
[ 7:12 PM, 01/25/08 ]
Kassi Price is now up for the Tide on floor - Perfect opening pass of a 2 1/2 to punch tuck - she is always there for showtime! Second pass of a double tuck - another perfect landing but legs a bit split -beautiful ring leap - cat leap double to cat leap 1 1/2 - final pass of a double pike - be strong - a little bend in the knees but she finishes with panche. RTR! says the Bama crowd on hand.
[ top... ]
Andrea Mitchell is on beam now, a little tentative, wants to stay on -
[ 7:11 PM, 01/25/08 ]
balance checks on flight series, leap series but nice straddle leap (side) - dismounts with a double tuck and almost touches the beam as she lunges forward (coach spotting her).
[ top... ]
Ricki Lebegern is up and nails her opening double pike, follows with a
[ 7:09 PM, 01/25/08 ]
front-front full twist to front layout - really goes for the stick on the third element and just misses it - she finishes with a double tuck - chest down a bit, step forward but she stands it up -
[ top... ]
Judges on floor are counting Casey's leap series "fall" as a true fall for a
[ 7:08 PM, 01/25/08 ]
9.175 final score.
[ top... ]
Casey Overton on floor for the Tide - needs to open with a strong double
[ 7:04 PM, 01/25/08 ]
pike landing - nice!!! - second pass of a double tuck, very nice landing - double cat leap, fell out of it and even went down immediately into her floor moves - we'll see how the judges view this - finishes with a whip 1/2 to whip full - nice recovery but she will get hit hard on that leap series going awry.
Kentucky's Snowden is also off on the balance beam on her flight series - so they will have to count a fall in their final tally on this event. She looks nervous up there but is throwing nice difficulty - straddle-straddle, a standing back tuck out of a leap, double twist dismount, nice recovery.
[ top... ]
Ashley O'Neal receives a 9.625 with the automatic one tenth included on the
[ 7:02 PM, 01/25/08 ]
floor routine for going out of bounds.
Kentucky's Ferguson gets a 9.550 on beam and the second gymnast up is Emilie Rymer and she falls on her flight series, third element. Rest of the routine looks good - front aerial and she dismounts with a gainer tuck full off the front, off to the side a bit. 9.175 is her score.
[ top... ]
Ashley O'Neal opens for Bama on floor - let's go O!!!
[ 6:59 PM, 01/25/08 ]
Opens with a front tuck through to a double pike - step back out of bounds - front-front full twist - front layout (form soft on second element) - pick it up O! Finishes with a double tuck, shuffle step back. These are the types of execution problems we saw last week for the Tide and they need to toughen up or risk giving away vital tenths. Let's go Bama!
[ top... ]
For KY - Hillary Ferguson up on the beam -
[ 6:58 PM, 01/25/08 ]
flight series of bhs to layout step-out, nice - flutter jump to tuck full jump - she is taking alot of time moving from one element to another - side aerial - bend at the waist to balance and stay on the beam - straddle-straddle-tuck back jump - dismounts with round off to 1 1/2, leg split on landing, small step to balance. 9.55 score - judges are conferencing due to discrepancy.
[ top... ]
Senior Kaitlin White is going to throw the front punch layout to double full
[ 6:52 PM, 01/25/08 ]
to upgrade her difficulty tonight. Ricki Lebegern will also return to the floor tonight and Casey Overton will be inserted for Kayla Hoffman, who is under the weather but performed magnificently tonight on bars (9.85) and vault (9.925).
[ top... ]
Alabama on vault is at 49.125, running total of 98.35 to KY's 96.975 after
[ 6:50 PM, 01/25/08 ]
they tallied a 48.50 on the uneven bars.
[ top... ]
Megan Mashburn vaults the pike 1/2, stands it up but has separation in the
[ 6:49 PM, 01/25/08 ]
air, chest down a bit and a step on the landing as well to control her motion backward.
[ top... ]
Morgan Dennis got inspired by Kayla's great vault and throws one of her
[ 6:47 PM, 01/25/08 ]
best ever - much better form in the air on the Y 1/1 through to the end, small hop back on the landing, chest high though. The judges are not as impressed, scoring it at 9.85.
[ top... ]
Rymer has a strong routine going until the double layout is landed forward
[ 6:47 PM, 01/25/08 ]
with two lunging steps. She receives a 9.775. Hmmm.
[ top... ]
Kayla Hoffman just stuck her flared Yurchenko 1/1 - nice distance on that
[ 6:46 PM, 01/25/08 ]
vault with arguably the best form as well. She receives a 9.925.
[ top... ]
Andrea Mitchell completes a Shaposhnikova transition and just misses
[ 6:45 PM, 01/25/08 ]
sticking her landing of the double layout. She receives a 9.75.
[ top... ]
Kassi Price sticks the Y 1/1 but has limited distance from the table and
[ 6:43 PM, 01/25/08 ]
also pikes it down a bit. Nice powerful run though. She also receives a 9.725. That was a better vault than O'Neal's but the judges see it differently.
[ top... ]
Hillary Ferguson on bars for KY
[ 6:41 PM, 01/25/08 ]
has execution problems on her transition to the low bar, double layout dismount is stuck. Handstands were not vertical unfortunately but her rhythm and pacing throughout were the best so far of the 'Cats line-up. She receives a 9.675.
[ top... ]
Ashley O'Neal stands up her pike 1/2 twist but legs are separated in flight
[ 6:41 PM, 01/25/08 ]
and she lands it chest down a bit, step back as well. Nice to see her back though competing on this event, she will only get better. She receives a 9.725.
[ top... ]
Crissy Cannon on bars for the Wildcats
[ 6:40 PM, 01/25/08 ]
she tucks her straddle Jaeger and this will be heavily deducted as a form error - double layout also has some form problems, hop back. She gets a 9.650.
[ top... ]
Kaitlin White just misses sticking her vault, piked it down a bit in flight as
[ 6:38 PM, 01/25/08 ]
well as she went for the stick - one of her best in the past two years but you never know how the judges are going to view it from their closer angle. She gets hit hard with a 9.725.
[ top... ]
KY - Phylicia Reshard on bars
[ 6:37 PM, 01/25/08 ]
straddle Jaeger, shoot over on the low bar (usually a deduction) but a high and stuck double layout, bent forward at the waist a bit to hold it. Form will be deducted for as well. She receives a 9.650.
[ top... ]
Lebegern starts Bama off with a 9.90 on vault!
[ 6:36 PM, 01/25/08 ]
Williams receives a 9.625 for her bars.
[ top... ]
Starting on the vault for Bama: Ricki Lebegern
[ 6:34 PM, 01/25/08 ]
Yurchenko 1/1 - drills the landing this week, no movement! But she likely will be deducted for the slight pike down and going in a bit flat again this week.
Williams on bars - straddle Jaeger, double front dismount, stumble to the side on the landing and cowboy form as well. Sluggish rotation throughout will cost her as well.
[ top... ]
Nice vault warm-up just then from Ricki Lebegern
[ 6:31 PM, 01/25/08 ]
Bama will vault: Ricki, Kaitlin, Ashley, Kassi, Kayla, Morgan with Megan and Alyssa possibly exhibiting.
Kentucky has two freshmen starting off on bars: Colleen Williams and Phylicia Reshard, followed by Crissy Cannon, Hillary Ferguson, Andrea Mitchell and Emilie Rymer.
[ top... ]
Bama has a total on bars of 49.225 to Kentucky's 48.475 on vault.
[ 6:29 PM, 01/25/08 ]
The Tide needs to stick those vaults this week! The judges last week at Auburn showed no sympathy without amplitude, form and stuck landings.
[ top... ]
Exhibition: Jac Shealy - Good routine on the bars with improved
[ 6:26 PM, 01/25/08 ]
handstands and a stuck Comaneci dismount this week. Her Tkatchev is one of the most beautiful you'll ever see. Her score is 9.625, so the judges saw this with some definite deductions and a lower start value apparently.
[ top... ]
Heather Hite bounds back huge with her Yurchenko 1/1 and is hit hard
[ 6:24 PM, 01/25/08 ]
by the judges with a 9.575.
Kassi Price hits all of her handstands, the Hindorff and just misses sticking the double layout dismount. All of the gals seem to be adjusting to these bars by rotating slower this week, even Kassi, who is usually more aggressive on this event. 9.875 is her score.
[ top... ]
Kayla Hoffman on the bars for the Tide
[ 6:19 PM, 01/25/08 ]
throws a very strong routine, hits the Tkatchev and sticks the double layout. Really went for the perfect handstands on the high bar and added a nice toe-shoot straddle to the high bar as her transition move. She receives a 9.850.
Terin Humphrey follows with a beautiful Khorkina and a stuck double layout dismount. She receives a 9.90! Wow!
[ top... ]
Ferguson throws the Hristakieva vault, bounding step forward, not as
[ 6:17 PM, 01/25/08 ]
controlled as you need to be on this landing though it is blind for a 9.725 score.
Emily Green of Kentucky gets a 9.65 for her Yurchenko 1/1, deducted mainly for piking down the landing and yet still looking pretty clean in the air, one step on the landing.
[ top... ]
Emilie Rymer throws a Y 1/1, large step back, flat going in as well. 9.775
[ 6:16 PM, 01/25/08 ]
Kaitlin White on bars for Bama - nice Geinger out of a full turn to a pak Salto transition - nice handstand to full turn to double tuck (high) but rotation also for her was not fast enough. She receives a 9.775.
[ top... ]
Kentucky on vault:
[ 6:13 PM, 01/25/08 ]
Andrea Mitchell throws a Yurchenko 1/1, chest down a bit, a little flat going in and a hop on the landing. She scores: 9.725
Morgan Dennis for the Tide - straddle shoot over, kip cast 1/2 turn to pike Jaeger, nice handstand transition on the high bar, nice handstand on the high bar and a 1/2 turn to stuck double tuck (cowboy form noted). She scores: 9.825
[ top... ]
Kentucky starts us off on vault.
[ 6:10 PM, 01/25/08 ]
Freshman Phylicia Reshard throws a Yurchenko 1/1, deep knee (one) landing, step back but nice form in the air. She scores: 9.625
Amanda Montgomery on uneven bars for Bama - nice handstands and a Gienger, but her rotation is slow despite good pirouetting for the most part. Nice dismount of a double tuck out of a full turn, slight step on the landing. She scores a 9.725.
[ top... ]
Kentucky has a new jumbotron here in Memorial Coliseum and the scores
[ 6:08 PM, 01/25/08 ]
should come up easier and more quickly tonight.
[ top... ]
We are about ready to get this meet started Tide fans!
[ 5:58 PM, 01/25/08 ]
Uneven bars line-up shows: Amanda Montgomery, Morgan Dennis, Kaitlin White, Kayla Hoffman, Terin Humphrey (!) and Kassi Price to anchor.
Kentucky will vault: Phylicia Reshard, Andrea Mitchell, Emilie Rymer, Hillary Ferguson, Emily Green, and anchor with Heather Hite.
[ top... ]
Keys to victory:
[ 5:49 PM, 01/25/08 ]
Kentucky had an opening season victory here at home against the Auburn Tigers and then ran into a buzz saw a week later at Southeast Missouri, tallying two points lower than their initial score of 193.425. So this week they will surely be hungry to prove that they belong in the SEC by throwing as many tricks as possible against the Tide, a team they have never defeated in dual or post-season competition. A larger crowd, if it shows, could help inspire them to a strong performance tonight. For the Alabama Crimson Tide, the coaches motto for the girls this week just like last week is: "start strong - finish strong" - Bama will once again have to pull from their depth on all four events to off-set some unexpected challenges this week, including a slightly sprained ankle that will limit Brittany Magee to balance beam and a nagging back injury that will hold Terin Humphrey to performing only on the uneven bars. Freshman sensation Kayla Hoffman will also be called upon tonight for only two events as well due to her being a little under the weather. So the Bama coaches are using this as another opportunity for the back-ups to show their stuff. If the Tide sticks to their plan by banking at least five solid routines on bars to start and five on balance beam to close, we should see another victory here in Memorial Coliseum. Roll Tide!
[ top... ]
The teams depart to prepare for the introductions. It's extremely cold up
[ 5:46 PM, 01/25/08 ]
here and the crowd is so far very sparse. We have a collection of about 30 Tide fans directly across from us with the gymnasts' boards ready to hold aloft, including Kayla Hoffman's family, all the way from New Jersey, and Ashley O'Neal's parents.
[ top... ]
Finishing up long warm-ups on balance beam, Ashley O'Neal is doing her
[ 5:32 PM, 01/25/08 ]
reps and looks a few weeks away from returning on this event. Lebegern looks confident.
[ top... ]
Perfect landing on her dismount on beam by Amanda Montgomery for the
[ 5:31 PM, 01/25/08 ]
extended warm-up. Overton, Magee, Lebegern, Chapman and O'Neal go last having already done earlier extended warm-ups when the rest of the team was on the uneven bars.
[ top... ]
Very nice switch leap to wolf jump from Kassi Price.
[ 5:28 PM, 01/25/08 ]
Looks like Morgan Dennis might be inserted into the beam line-up tonight. Two gorgeous layout step-outs just then out of a bhs. She tends to start off slow a bit at the beginning of the season and then quickly shifts into gear with her consistency. She has one of the most difficult routines and it's therefore very hard to keep her out of the line-up.
Excellent music variety for the Wildcats on floor but it is way too loud!!!!
[ top... ]
Bama moves to the balance beam for their final 15 minute warm-up.
[ 5:23 PM, 01/25/08 ]
Junior Amanda Montgomery starts the warm-up off with a front walkover to immediate side aerial. Kassi Price follows her with a front aerial to back handspring to layout step-out; wolf front aerial. Morgan is testing the beam with two layouts in a row. Switch leap to wolf jump to tuck full. Nice
[ top... ]
Coach Bryan Raschilla is happy with Ricki Lebegern's tumbling reps and gives
[ 5:18 PM, 01/25/08 ]
her a high five. Coach Sarah also gives praise to Kassi Price for just hitting her 2 1/2 to punch front. Casey Overton is struggling just a bit on her landings on floor and receives encouragement from Bryan to keep working.
[ top... ]
Brittany Magee will likely just do balance beam tonight after suffering a
[ 5:16 PM, 01/25/08 ]
mild ankle sprain in practice this week. Coach David Patterson just confirmed that Kayla Hoffman will likely just do uneven bars and vault tonight due to being a bit under the weather.
[ top... ]
Nice double tuck from Kassi Price just then on floor
[ 5:12 PM, 01/25/08 ]
and a double pike from Alyssa Chapman.
Kaitlin White just threw a front punch layout to immediate double full, staying well within the boundaries. So there's the return of her E pass on floor. Morgan Dennis is checking out every corner of the floor to figure out which will prove to be the best for her difficult landings.
[ top... ]
We are on line for the UA versus Kentucky meet tonight from Lexington.
[ 5:07 PM, 01/25/08 ]
Alabama has completed the long warm-up on uneven bars and is now just finishing their vault warm-up as well.
Ashley O'Neal is vaulting and possibly will exhibit, along with freshman Megan Mashburn and sophomore Alyssa Chapman.
