<< Interview with Shay Murphy >>
(Friday, January 01, 1999) [ Interviews: Archives ]

[Q] Shay, I understand you had a big summer last year, why don't you tell me about it.

[SM] I went to Europe! Two whole weeks. We started in France and stayed there for three days. Next we went to Belgium - I actually stayed away from the chocolate. It's not that I was being good or anything, I was just holding out for Switzerland. Then we went to Amsterdam where we stayed with a family for two days. We got up at 7:00 in the morning. They gave us a tour and we did not get home until sunrise. It really is true that if you haven't seen Amsterdam after sundown, you haven't seen Amsterdam. We got on the train in the morning to go to Koln Germany. We saw a church that my best friend's parents got married in. Right now you have to wait 25 years to get married in that castle. That was breathtaking. Then we went to Geneva (that's where I got my chocolate - lot's of it). We actually stayed at a home for girls - no, not wayward girls, rather girls doing internships and stuff. London was our next stop. The most difficult thing there was that you had to look the wrong way when crossing the street. They actually had signs on the side of the road telling you to look that other way.

[Q] What was that about? Was it a pre-graduation present, a reward for working so hard to rehab your knee or what?

[SM] Actually, I got the money from my aunt. She just had some extra money and heard my parents talking about how my best friend was going. She decided to pay my way. Thanks Aunt Irene.

[Q] Hey, speaking of relations, I understand you have a new nephew you are kind of fond of huh?

[SM] Yes. His name is Brendan James Murphy. He is my brother's son. He is 4 months old. He's wonderful. He looks just like my brother. My niece, on the other hand, looks like my sister in law - thank goodness. (just kidding Brian)

[Q] So, same kind of plans for this summer?

[SM] No. School, school, and more school. I have some catching up to do.

[Q] Have you thought about what you want to do after gymnastics?

[SM] I am planning on going to South Alabama for the physicians assistant program. I plan to apply some time next spring - I will graduate next Fall. Hopefully, Merritt will be coming with me - I think she wants to go to Medical School. We would like to room together if all works out.

[Q] Thanks for your time Shay and good luck this year.

[SM] Thank you. It was my pleasure.
