PBAs were back at it on Sunday, watching the Tide work out in preparation for the Ghosts vs. Goblins Intra-squad meet, which is slated for Sunday, October 28, 2001, at 1:30 pm. Major conditioning work was again the order of the day, with the gals rotating around 16 stations for approximately 45 minutes. Then on to vault, bars, and beam for more skills building. Let's take a peek…
Michelle Reeser: The freshman was throwing several confident Tkatchevs and already has a Gienger release move to add to her routine. Dismount will be a double layout.
Alexis Brion: Conditioning was the order of the day to hopefully avoid shoulder "clean up" surgery in the near future. Alexis worked out just as intensely as her team mates during the conditioning drills on this date and doesn't want to be on the sidelines any longer than necessary, according to the coaches. We admire her tenacity.
Lauren Holdefer: Egads! Was that a Voronin we saw? You betcha. This release move is similar to Kristin Sterner's full twisting Tkatchev but the legs remain together while the gymnast shoots over the high bar and ends up facing the opposite direction. Really cool to see in action and Lauren's long lines make it an elegant move as well.
Jeana Rice: Can you say…full in full out dismount on the bars? She stood it up comfortably several times on this date. Excellent wolf full jumps on the beam as well.
Whitney Morgan: She has the Tkatchev release back solid and was shooting over to the low bar with no breaks on this date. Whitney looks happy and pain free.
Natalie Barrington: Lots of work on her pirouetting and the pak salto today. Form was impeccable as usual. Beam flight series also received a lot of attention (flic flac, flic flac, layout) as did her switch leap to Korbut (fish flop).
Andree Pickens: The gasp of the day was evoked when 'Dree threw the release combination we have been hoping to see for four years, a Tkatchev to immediate Gienger. Her dismount of full in is back as well. Does she ever rest? On beam she was throwing her flight series, several wolf jumps in a row and has added a shoulder roll to her signature scissors leg twist (where she works down on the beam). Looking terrific!
Raegan Tomasek: Raegan just about has her second bars release down (a toe-on toe off to half turn to a straddle back to handstand from high to low bar; she also has a piked Jaeger release). Raegan has added a back handspring to double twist dismount off the side of the balance beam, thanks to extra coaching from April Makinson. We were told to look for an aerial in her new beam routine as well. How about an aerial to immediate double twist dismount off the side? Now that would be incredible!
Tiffany Byrd: On bars, the Hindorff continues to set her apart, a'la Andree. On balance beam she is throwing a flic flac, flic flac, layout flight series and a double tuck dismount. Is she destined to be the next Ice Ice Lissy? She sure is practicing that way.
Sara Scarborough: She was working diligently on two types of vaults, a Phelps (laid out) and a Tsuk layout with a full twist into the pits. Her uneven bars work included very nice giants and a double tuck dismount. We hope to see her soon on floor, where she has some very nice difficulty.
Shannon Hrozek: She was working on her Yurchenko (round off entry) timing and has a very powerful run and push off the horse. Shannon will be in the line up for 3, possibly 4 events come January according to the coaches.
Alexa Martinez: Even the coaches say that Alexa has had the best pre-season conditioning of her entire four years at UA and it shows in her workout attitude. She was working on her vault (currently a front tuck, but she has the pike barani in her arsenal) and her uneven bars routine. She has shown much improvement on bars over the past week according to David Patterson. Alexa has very clean lines on bars and her layout dismount is one of the best we have seen.
Helen Burgin: Still building her stamina for beam and floor work, Helen was working on her flight series and her beam dismount on this date. She has the skills, just needs to be in top condition to demonstrate them successfully.
Kristin Sterner: Lots of focus on her balance beam flight series by Coach Patterson on this date despite the fact that she completed it quite successfully several times. We wonder if Coach is prepping her for two layouts again or has something else in mind? We will keep the fans posted. Uneven bars work was mainly on the full twisting Tkatchev and her vault remains the pike barani. Call her Miss Solidarity!
Stephanie Kite: Steph has returned for her sophomore year in excellent shape and seems to have more stamina as a result. She was practicing the pike barani vault on this date along with her flight series and leaps on balance beam. Keeping her legs together and getting a strong push off the vault remain her top challenges. Her run to the horse is very powerful.
Erin Holdefer: She had the day off, so nothing to report!
