Usually, a trip from Alabama to Los Angeles, Calif. does not involve a stop in Oregon, but that's just the route the Alabama Gymnastics team is looking to take.
The No. 3 ranked Crimson Tide will travel to Corvallis, Ore. to compete in the NCAA West Region on Saturday, April 3 for one of two spots available from that regional to the NCAA Championships hosted by UCLA.
"We're looking forward to earning our ticket to the NCAA Championships," head coach Sarah Patterson said. "It's a long trip, but we will be on Spring Break, so we're not as crunched in terms of classes and travel. We will go out Wednesday afternoon and use Thursday to adjust."
Alabama has advanced to the last 21 NCAA Championships. Only Utah has been to as many consecutive national championships. The Tide is vying for its 20th regional title and seventh in a row. While Alabama hasn't been to Oregon State since the 1993 NCAA Championships, Patterson is excited about returning to the venue.
"Oregon State has a great arena for gymnastics and a vocal and excitable fan base," Patterson said. "Our ladies are at their best competing in front of a great crowd like they have in Corvallis. That's a real plus for us."
Six teams, five all-around competitors from teams that did not advance and one individual event specialist per event were named to each of the six regions. The top two teams and the top two all-around competitors (who are not on an advancing team) from each regional will receive an automatic berth to the national championships in Los Angeles, California, April 15-17, hosted by the University of California, Los Angeles.
In addition, the event winners at the regional championships will advance to the national championships (in that event only) if they are not part of a qualifying team or the all-around qualifiers.
