<< No. 4 Alabama Gymnastics Faces No. 8 LSU at Home Friday: World Champion Acro Team also to Perform >>
(Friday, January 21, 2005) [ Press Releases: Archives ]

Not only will two of the nation's best gymnastics team square off Friday night in Coleman Coliseum when No. 4 Alabama takes on No. 8 LSU, but fans will also be treated to a performance of world championship proportion.

The two-time World Champion Acro Gymnastics team of Arthur Davis and Shenea Booth will perform during the Crimson Tide meet. In addition to winning the World Championship in 2002 and 2004, Davis and Booth were a part of the T.J. Maxx Tour of Champions this fall, the same tour that featured Alabama freshman and two-time Olympic Silver Medalist Terin Humphrey.

"When we went to see Terin on the T.J. Maxx tour this fall, we saw Arthur and Shenea perform and we knew this is something that Alabama fans would really enjoy," Alabama head coach Sarah Patterson said. "We're very excited that they could join us for this meet. Our fans are in for a real treat."

Humphrey, a World Champion in her own right as a member of the United States' 2003 gold medal squad, made her debut for the Tide last Friday on the uneven bars, winning the event with a 9.9. This Friday she is slated to go in both the uneven bars and balance beam.

Even with Humphrey in the lineup on two events, Alabama head coach Sarah Patterson expects this to be a tough meet for the Tide.

"LSU is a veteran team that will come in here ready to compete," Patterson said. "I fully expect for it to come down to the last event; to our last two routines on the floor exercise and their last two routines on the balance beam. We're going to need to be slightly ahead or close to LSU going into that last rotation to come out with a win."

Alabama will be looking for another outstanding performance from All-American Ashley Miles who has been named the Southeastern Conference Gymnast of the Week the first two weeks of the season. LSU will look to junior All-American April Burkholder to lead them against the Crimson Tide.

"We have trained hard all week and we are excited for this meet," said LSU head coach D-D Breaux said. "We are planning on keeping the lineup similar to what it was last week. We just have to focus on cleaning up our landings and improving on last week's performances."

The meet will be broadcast by ESPN2 on a tape delay basis. The first air date is scheduled for Sat., June 30 at 2:30 p.m. (CT).
