As anticipated, last weekend's meet with the 'up-and-coming' University of Denver was a real battle right down to the wire. One could not help but be impressed with the well-executed routines and the steady nerves of the Denver gymnasts, especially on the balance beam. The Bama crowd was large and enthusiastic, but the Pioneers blazed a trail through all adversity. Although Bama's, perhaps, superior depth and talent prevailed in the end (195.675-195.225), Denver more than held their own. Both teams seemed energized by the crowd, which made for a thoroughly enjoyable meet.
In a break from my usual story concerning the meet, I wanted to turn my attention to an event that took place the next day, namely the Tide Tykes and Teens Reception. However, I would like to recommend an excellent story concerning the meet, the link for which is shown on the front page of this site under the heading "Postmeet Commentary: Tide Fans Were On The Edges of Their Seats...".
For a few years now, the Medallist Club has been hosting a reception for the 'Tide Tykes and Teens'. Among the purposes of this reception are: to introduce the Tide's youngest fans to the gymnasts, to allow a chance for the gymnasts and those fans to interact, to prepare the 'Tide Tykes' for the 'march-out' during an upcoming meet, and, most important, just to have a great time! On all of these counts and more, this year's event was a great success. I'm sure there will be a full story on the Tide Tykes and Teen reception I the coming days, however, I just wanted to say thanks to all participants: coaches, gymnasts, volunteers, parents, and children for such a memorable time.
Next up, Nebraska! Let's fill up the gym and show our friends from the Cornhusker state a warm Alabama welcome. Roll Tide!
