The Gym Dawgs come into Coleman Coliseum Saturday night with an experienced, strong and undefeated team. Georgia is coming off a bye week and should be well rested and ready to go head to head with the #1 Crimson Tide. An earlier meeting of these two teams in Athens in January saw the then #1 Dawgs win 196.45-195.725. Georgia is led by senior All-American Karin Lichey who will see action on every event. Her sister, sophomore All-American Kristi may join her also on all four apparati. Look for the Licheys and junior Brooke Anderson to throw handspring front pike + twist vaults. On uneven bars, seniors rule here. Along with Karin, All-American Jenni Bethard, All-American Sam Muhleman, and Stacy Galloway can bring in the big scores. Bethard is the Æ97 NCAA bars champion, as well as the Æ98 NCAA beam champion. Freshman Eileen Diaz adds depth to bars with an incredible dismount. On beam, donÆt be surprised to see some 10.0Æs from Karin Lichey and Jenny Bethard. Not to be outdone, Kristi Lichey has a jam packed routine that reminds fans of Kim Arnold. Sam Muhleman and Stacy Galloway are strong and consistent performers on this apparatus, as well as sophomore Amanda Curry. Sophomore All-American Suzanne Sears will lead a strong tumbling team that earlier against Alabama scored a 49.525. Look for Karin Lichey to mount with a full-in, and Kristi with a possible double layout. Both are powerful tumblers. Stacy Galloway, Caroline Harris and Jenny Bethard will probably fill the rest of the lineup for Georgia on the floor, and all are capable of scoring from 9.80 and up.
Georgia may compete some new faces against the Tide that include freshman Emily Chell on vault, Danielle Maurone on vault and floor, Talya Vexler on beam, and April Hoellman on floor.
Alabama freshman Andree Pickens, sophomore Robin Hawkins, and possibly senior Gwen Spidle will perform in the all-around Saturday night. For Gwen, it will be the first time this year on four apparati. She is planning on upgrading her Yurchenko vault to one with a 10.0 start value. Also expect to see on vault throwing 10.0 vaults, Robin Hawkins, and freshmen Raegan Tomasek and Alexa Martinez. The latter is questionable after last weeks knee strain at Florida. The coaches will make a game time decision on what Alexa will do. Like Georgia, Bama is deep on bars and can score in the high 49Æs. Sophomore Dara Stewart, and freshmen Andree Pickens and Natalie Barringtion will need to hit for the big scores. Beam will see the return of Gwen Spidle who has sat out this apparatus for the last two meets. The coaches have shown that they are not afraid to put new faces in the lineup, as witnessed last week against Florida when Dara Stewart stepped in and nailed her first beam routine of the year. Senior Mandy Chapman and sophomore Lissy Smith will need to perform their usual consistent routines along with Andree Pickens, Robin Hawkins, Alexa Martinez and Raegan Tomasek. Alabama needs to hit six out of six routines in this meet like they did against Florida. On floor, Bama will spread out consistent performers with risky ones. Expect to see Mandy Chapman lead off with Robin Hawkins, Gwen Spidle, and Alexa Martinez to follow. Raegan Tomasek may possibly mount with her double front arabian and freshman Krista Gole with three whips to a double twist.
Fans can expect to see big time gymnastics from both of these teams on Saturday night. Win or lose, both teams will be battling again in Tuscaloosa for the SEC championships in March and the NCAAÆs in April.
