The Booster Organization for the University of Alabama Gymnastics Program
<< Alabama At Utah State >>
(Friday, January 01, 1999) [ Scouting Report: Archives ]

The Alabama Gymnastics Team will end the regular season on the road when they visit the 16th ranked Utah State Aggies Saturday night. Both teams are coming off impressive victories last week and Alabama will put its number two ranking on the line while resting several members who have been steadily performing since January. Senior Gwen Spidle will likely not do vault in order to allow plenty of recovery time from a bruised heel suffered two weeks ago while Andree Pickens will probably do vault and bars only. The word from the Rockies is that scoring is tight and judges awarding perfect tens are scarce. This will be the first time this season that judges will see this Alabama team and fans should not be surprised if the team score is lower than usual for the Tide.

Leading the Aggies is senior all-arounder Amber Jamison and junior Christy Denson. Denson has hit for a season high of 39.55. With Andree only doing two events, look for Robin Hawkins to possibly go all-around for Alabama. Joining Jamison and Denson on vault will be Jessenia Abrego and Laurie Cannon who have been solid vaulters for Utah State this season. Alabama will send its top bar line-up against these vaulters to grab as much of a lead as possible. The triple threat of Pickens, Stewart and Barrington will be shored up by Gwen Spidle, Robin Hawkins and Mandy Chapman/Katie Hornecker or Whitney Morgan. On bars, Utah State's Cannon has scored in the high 9.90's and will have teammates Kirra Degener, Abrego, Denson and Jamison in the rotation. On vault, Bama will send Stewart, Hawkins, Pickens, Morgan and Katie Hornecker. Raegan Tomasek is showing more confidence with her handspring front pike vault and will perform it for the Tide. Senior Krissy Richards is a beam specialist for the Aggies and will join Jamison and Denson in that event while the Tide will alter their floor line-up. Look for seniors Mandy and Gwen to start and end the rotation along with Robin, Raegan, Whitney Morgan, Krista Gole and Lissy Smith. After exhibiting last week, Alexa Martinez should return to the line-up on floor while beam will see Mandy, Dara, Alexa, Lissy, Raegan and possibly Robin, Natalie or Gwen compete. Utah State will end on floor and will be looking for some big scores to counteract Bama on the balance beam. Richards and Degener will tumble for the Aggies along with Abrego and Jamison. The Tide could use another strong road score to pace them to regionals. Let's hope everyone has a safe and rewarding trip and we look forward to their return for SECs on March 27th. Roll Tide Roll!
