<< Alabama vs. University of North Carolina >>
(Tuesday, February 08, 2000) [ Scouting Report: Archives ]

Alabama is at home this weekend to compete against the University of North Carolina. This team consists of 14 members. With 6 Seniors and 5 Freshman, this is a team who on one had has a lot of experience, and on the other, is just starting out. The Freshman will need the sage advice of the Seniors this week to prepare for the energy packed meet at Coleman Coliseum.

Junior Brooke Wilson puts in a strong performance All Around for the team. This year her strongest performances have been on the beam and floor. She holds the school beam record of 9.95 and has scored a 9.90 already this season. Recently in their meet against Rhode Island, she broke the school floor exercise record with a 9.95. In this meet she also broke the school All Around record with a total of 39.425. On bars her high this year is a 9.80. She is also one of the teams strongest vaulters. Last month, Wilson was honored by being named an Eastern Athletic Gymnastic League gymnast of the week.

Senior Meredith McDermott is the other regular All Around competitor for the Tar Heels. She has not been as consistent in her performances as Wilson. Her strength appears to be on the beam this year. She is struggling to be solid on the other events.

Senior Julie Pasqualini seems to be hiding in the shadow of Wilson. Against Rhode Island, she had broken the Tar Heel floor record with a score of 9.90. It was to be broken again, only moments later, with Wilson's score of 9.95. Pasqualini is also one of the teams more consistent members on the bars.

Senior Erica Roberts was not noticeable in the line up, until the Governor's Cup meet last week. There she scored a 9.85 on the balance beam.

Last year, two of UNC's gymnasts went on to compete in the All Around at Regionals, Wilson and Sophomore Monica Middleton. Middleton's presence does not seem to be as strong this year as it had been in her Freshman year.

The coach of UNC is David Galvin. This will be his 19th year with the team.

UNC can expect an exciting competition this weekend, and a warm welcome from the Alabama fans.
