SOOWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE! Barbecue those pigs!
The # 5 ranked Crimson Tide travels to Fayetteville Friday night to compete with Arkansas for the first time. New to the SEC and the college gymnastics world, the Lady Razorbacks (or Ladybacks), field a completely freshmen squad. Look for Tiffany Berry and Hannah McLeod to vie in the all-around and National Elite Katie Hardeman. Both have scored in the 38 range two weeks in a row. Barnhill Arena will bring a good crowd that could surpass the 5400 that welcomed Florida to town last weekend.
Bama will be competing twice this weekend, with the first stop Friday night in Arkansas and the second leg in Lincoln, Nebraska at 2:00pm Sunday. The coaches may rest Jeana Rice Friday night in the all-around. After scoring a perfect 10 against Georgia on the beam, Jeana will probably perform on bars, vault and beam. Freshman Dana Filetti exhibited on bars last week in Athens with a solid and difficult set, so watch for her in the lineup against the 'Backs. Sophomore Shannon Hrozek has solidified her lead off position on bars along with Dana Pierce. Larissa Stewart may surprise Tide fans by debuting on both bars and beam. Rounding out the lineup is super freshman, Ashley Miles, who has performed consistently two weeks on this event, along with lone senior Kristin Sterner.
New faces may appear on vault Friday night. Lauren Holdefer was warming up her double pike and her new 10.0 vault (half on, half off layout). Mari-Christine Bayer, Kristin Sterner, and Stephanie Kite, along with Hrozek, Pierce and Filetti are hoping to push Rice and Miles on this event.
Two weeks in a row is tough on gymnasts, especially freshmen learning how to adjust to the weekly grind of competing in college. This is where Ashley, who has had back to back 9.95's on the floor, may be watching from the sidelines along with Jeana and Kristin. Reeser, Kite and Bayer may be joined by Holdefer, Filetti, and Hrozek against the Hogs. The Bama nation could even see the debut of Rachel Delahoussaye on floor, who has very expressive dance.
After a beam team score of 49.55, the coaches will have a hard time messing with that lineup, but you just never know. Larissa Stewart is waiting to debut one of the Tide's most elegant and difficult routines on this event. Last week saw the graceful performance of Mari-Christine Bayer , the perfection of Jeana, and the sheer power of Kristin. Shannon and Michelle like their spots, with both having a 3 pass series. Reeser added her back dive to beam after her flip-flop to layout. Ashley Miles has a gainer to full twisting tuck in her arsenal and may see some beam action this weekend. Filetti and Delahoussaye throw side somersaults and one or both could perform this weekend.
See you live on the web Tide fans.
