Robin Hawkins

Someday down the road, when television king Regis Philbin follows former partner Kathie Lee Gifford into the sunset, Crimson Tide fans just might see "Live with Robin Hawkins" It could happen for the senior all-arounder. A couple of years under Philbin's tutelage, sharing the set with him on "Regis and Robin" and then a show of her own.

"It wouldn't surprise me at all to turn on the television one day and see Robin sitting their, smiling that 100-watt smile and talking to a celebrity," head coach Sarah Patterson said. "She's going to be a success at whatever she does, she has that kind of drive and spirit."

Long term, the Telecommunications and Film major would like to end up in front of the camera, but unlike most folks who get involved in the world of television, Hawkins wants to start her career behind the camera as a producer.

"I'd like to produce for a while, then move in front of the camera," Hawkins said. "I think that transition would be easier for me than doing it the other way around. Of course my dad says that most people just pick one or the other."

She's already started her television career, producing a segment for the campus TV station on a local landmark that is close to her heart.

"I was the producer for a one-minute segment on Coleman Coliseum," Hawkins said. "It went really well, except we erased the entire piece while we were laying down the voice track. We spent five hours the day before it was due fixing it. But it turned out to be the best one in the class."

The Scholastic All-American has aspirations of working her way up the ladder at one of the numerous production companies that create shows for one of the big networks. Before she strikes out into the world though, she has her sights set on graduate school and a masters of Film Arts.

Of course, grad school and the work-a-day world have to wait one more year. She has one more year wearing the crimson and white.

"I am so excited to get this season started," Hawkins said. "But I don't want to rush through it. I want to savor every bit. I remember thinking it would take forever to get to my senior year, and now I don't want it to be over."

The producer in Hawkins wants everything to go just so, and to this point it has. She cites the environment in practice as being the best of her four years.

"Every year the atmosphere has changed, but this year instead of changing, it's grown more comfortable," Hawkins said. "It's not as much practicing as hanging out with my friends. Yeah, it's hard and it's still practice, but we get along so well that I look forward to going to the gym more than ever."

The easy atmosphere in the gym is laughter-filled, a quality that Hawkins hopes to bring to her television career.

"I'd like to work on a show like 'Seinfeld' or 'Will and Grace,'" the Memphis, Tenn., native said. "Shows that are as fun to make as they are to watch."

And lest a potential employer think her overly picky, she adds quickly with her trademark grin, "but of course, any job would be great."
