Alabama senior gymnast Ashley Miles continues her stranglehold on the top spot in the national vault rankings. The two-time NCAA vault champion has held down the nation's top spot all but one week of the season. She is also ranked third on the floor exercise. Freshmen Brittany Magee and Melanie Banville are also ranked in the top-25 on the floor exercise, coming in at No. 16 and 23 respectively. Magee is ranked eighth on the vault and 23rd on the balance beam. Sophomore Terin Humphrey is 10th on the uneven bars where Banville is 23rd. The rankings are determined by the regional qualifying score, which takes a team's three highest road scores, its next three highest scores - home or away - drops the high score and averages the remaining five scores. The RQS will determine the teams that qualify to the six NCAA Regional sites.

The No. 3 Alabama Gymnastics team beat No. 21 Arkansas 195.825-194.150 in front of another stellar Coleman Coliseum crowd here tonight. "I thought we got a lot of people out there," head coach Sarah Patterson said. "We are improving in some areas but especially in our depth. I'm going to go into the girls and say we need to look at our performance tonight, the things we did better and then watch the videotape and look at the score sheet and try to learn from what the judges gave us." For the third time this season the Coliseum neared capacity when 13,579 fans poured in. It is the fifth largest crowd in school and the seventh largest nationally over the past decade. It marks the first time in school history that Alabama has had three crowds of 10,000-plus in a single season.

It was another terrific, nail-biting competition that took place between the Alabama Crimson Tide and the Georgia Bulldogs this past weekend at Coleman Coliseum. The Dawgs grabbed the win by a whisker of UGA VI's muzzle, 196.625 to 196.575, which was not decided until the final routines from each team were thrown.

The No. 3 ranked Alabama Gymnastics team faces off against No. 21 Arkansas in Coleman Coliseum Friday (Feb. 17) in a series still in its infancy. While Alabama is in its 32nd season of gymnastics competition, the Lady Razorback program is just four years old, having started with the 2003 season under co-head coaches Mark and Renee Cook. Their squad has made remarkable progress in a short time. They were fourth at last year's NCAA East Region Championships and fifth at the Southeastern Conference Championships. While the Lady Razorbacks are only making their second trip to the Capstone, the first coming in 2004, the Cooks brought their previous team, Stanford, to Coleman Coliseum for the 2001 Super Six Challenge.

Alabama gymnastics senior Ashley Miles remains the nation's No. 1 ranked vaulter this week, extending her lead over the rest of the field. Miles, who won her sixth consecutive vault titles last Friday night against Georgia with a 9.925, has propelled Alabama's No. 2 ranked vault lineup. All her vaults have gone for 9.9 or better including three 9.95s and a 9.975, the nation's top vault score this season. The San Antonio, Texas native is also ranked second on the floor exercise, where she has scored 9.95 on her last three routines this season. Alabama, ranked No. 3 nationally again this week, is gaining ground on No. 2 Utah, standing less than a tenth of a point in total season average behind the Utes. Georgia retains the No. 1 spot while No. 4 Michigan and No. 5 Florida also holding on to their spots from a week ago. No. 6 Oklahoma, No. 7 Iowa State, No. 8 Nebraska, No. 9 UCLA and No. 10 Stanford round out the top-10.

Despite the cold, rainy weather outside, 14,263 fans were on hand making up the third largest crowd in Southeastern Conference history. It was also the eighth largest crowd in the history of collegiate gymnastics and the fourth largest of the past decade. "I am thrilled we have created an environment that creates this kind of excitement," Alabama head coach Sarah Patterson said.
